Notes: The effect of wire width variation on the conductance of a 1 μm×30 nm silicon quantum wire has been studied. Both resonant tunneling features and conductance fluctuations superimposed on the quantized steps have been observed and explained by the existence of a step-wise constriction in the wire due to the nonideality in the fabrication process.

Notes: Abstract The thermal stability of CoSi2 thin films on GaAs substrates has been studied using a variety of techniques. The CoSi2 thin films were formed by depositing Co(500 Å) and Si(1800 Å) layers on GaAs substrates by electron-beam evaporation followed by annealing processes, where the Si inter-layer was used as a diffusion/reaction barrier at the interface. The resistivity of CoSi2 thin films formed is about 30 μΩ cm. The Schottky barrier height of CoSi2/n-GaAs is 0.76 eV and the ideality factor is 1.14 after annealing at 750° C for 30 min. The CoSi2/GaAs interface is determined to be thermally stable and the thin film morphologically uniform on GaAs after 900° C/30 s anneal. The CoSi2 thin films fulfill the requirements in GaAs self-aligned gate technology.

Notes: Abstract Refractive index and density measurements are given for the ternary systemsX M2O :Y Al2O3: (1 -X -Y)GeO2 where M = sodium and rubidium for Na/(Na + Rb) = 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and 1.0; (1 -X -Y) = 0.7, 0.8 and 0.9 andY/X = 0, 0.3 and 1.0. The values of the molar refractivity,R, are related to the structure of the glass. At low alkali concentrations, the decrease inR with increasingX is related to the closer packing of the network. At high alkali concentrations the changes inR appear to be controlled by the introduction of non-bridging oxygens into the network. Alumina additions to the germania network strongly increaseR and this appears to be related to change in the network packing brought about by the conversion of Ge4+ from octahedral to tetrahedral coordination.

Notes: Abstract We have developed a simple superconducting thin film device that can be used as either a thermometer or a thermal conductivity sensor. Over a narrow range the device has somewhat better temperature resolution than a conventional germanium thermometer, but its main advantage is that it has very high spatial resolution. The fabrication and operation of the device are described, together with preliminary results of experiments in which it is used to study liquid4He very nearT λ. Potential improvements are also discussed.

Notes: Summary Based on an infinite network gel model, using Graph theory and Probability as investigative tools, first of all, advanced a new theory about predicting the gel point Pc The critical state equations of gelation for three kinds of non-linear polymerization have been derived. The Pc obtained by these equations lies between the results from Carothers equation and Statistical theory, and is in good agreement with experimental results.

Notes: Abstract A theoretically based simplified crossover model, which is capable of representing the thermodynamic properties of fluids in a large range of temperatures and densities around the critical point, is presented. The model is used to predict the thermodynamic properties of R134a in the critical region from a limited amount of available experimental information. Values for various thermodynamic properties of R134a at densities from 2 to 8 mol·L−1 and at temperatures from 365 to 450 K are presented.

Notes: Abstract An equation of state is presented for the thermodynamic properties of methane in the vicinity of the critical point. It incorporates the scaled asymptotic critical behavior predicted theoretically and supplements a global analytic equation of state for methane recently developed by Setzmann and Wagner.
