    Notes: Abstract  This paper reports the results from a medium-term field scale investigation into the effects of simulated climate change on soil N mineralisation in a semi-natural calcareous grassland in southern England. The experiment utilised soil warming cables, automatic rainshelters and a watering system to examine two climate change scenarios: warmer winters with summer drought and warmer winters with enhanced summer rainfall. Gross N mineralisation rates in treated plots were determined, using 15N pool dilution techniques, at 6-weekly intervals over a 3-year period. Results from control plots showed a strong seasonality of mineralisation with highest rates in autumn and winter and lowest rates in summer. They suggest that water availability is the main constraint on microbial processes and plant growth. Unexpectedly, additional summer rainfall had no direct effect on N mineralisation at the time of application (summer). The treatment did, however, significantly (〈0.05%) reduce rates in subsequent autumn and winter months. In contrast, summer drought significantly increased N mineralisation rates in autumn and winter. Winter warming similarly had no direct effect on N mineralisation in winter but decreased rates in spring. We hypothesise that the observed treatment effects result from changes in organic C and N input, in plant litter, resulting from the direct impact of climatic manipulation on perennial plant growth, death and senescence. This paper compares and contrasts the response to climate manipulation in the grassland system with results from other ecosystem types such as northern forests.

    Notes: Abstract The Modern Laplacian Theory of the origin of the solar system (Prentice 1978) assumes a non-dissipative model of supersonic turbulence, and the existence of stable rings left behind during the contraction of the proto-sun. We show by numerical simulation that the turbulence is highly dissipative and the rings unstable. As a result of the instability, the rings spread and interact with the proto-sun. The rings therefore cannot form in the way Prentice proposed.

    Notes: Abstract  Immunolocalisation of type XIV collagen/undulin in the human mammary gland revealed greater deposition in the interlobular stroma than in the intralobular stroma. The interlobular stroma is located between the breast lobules and their associated intralobular stroma. Fibroblasts isolated from the interlobular stroma synthesised 3- to 5-fold more type XIV collagen/undulin than intralobular fibroblasts, but synthesised type I and type IV collagens in similar amounts. The differential expression of type XIV collagen/undulin was maintained with passage in culture. The results suggest a role for type XIV collagen/undulin in stabilising dense collagen fibrils. The maintenance of two types of structurally distinct stromas may be important during developmental processes in the mammary gland.

    Notes: Abstract In this study, astrocytes and microvessels of the human cerebral cortex were analysed morphometrically with the aim of acquiring quantitative information on the glio-vascular relationships, considered to be of great importance in the formation and functioning of the blood--brain barrier. Immunohistochemistry for the astrocytic marker, glial fibrillary acidic protein, was used with a computerized image analysis system. The brain tissue was embedded using the progressive lowering of temperature method, and the image analyser was applied to semithin sections subjected to immunogold--silver staining and viewed by epipolarization microscopy. The results show that, in the human cerebral cortex, astrocytes cover 11.4% of the cortex area and that their perivascular processes are nearly as extensive as the vascular bed (0.8% versus 1.72% of the cortex area). These processes form a virtually continuous sheath around the vascular walls, only 11% of the vessel perimeter lacking this astrocytic glia covering. The present results, compared with previous unpublished data obtained by conventional immunocytochemical procedures on wax sections, indicate that low-temperature methods combined with gold--silver immunolabelling on semithin sections significantly improve the detection of immunoreactivity and the performance of the image analyser

    Notes: Abstract Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells require two genes, CSG1/SUR1 and CSG2, for growth in 50 mM Ca2+, but not 50 mM Sr2+. CSG2 was previously shown to be required for the mannosylation of inositol-phosphorylceramide (IPC) to form mannosylinositolphosphorylceramide (MIPC). Here we demonstrate that SUR1/CSG1 is both genetically and biochemically related to CSG2. Like CSG2, SUR1/CSG1 is required for IPC mannosylation. A 93–amino acid stretch of Csg1p shows 29% identity with the α-1, 6-mannosyltransferase encoded by OCH1. The SUR1/CSG1 gene is a dose-dependent suppressor of the Ca2+-sensitive phenotype of the csg2 mutant, but overexpression of CSG2 does not suppress the Ca2+ sensitivity of the csg1 mutant. The csg1 and csg2 mutants display normal growth in YPD, indicating that mannosylation of sphingolipids is not essential. Increased osmolarity of the growth medium increases the Ca2+ tolerance of csg1 and csg2 mutant cells, suggesting that altered cell wall synthesis causes Ca2+-induced death. Hydroxylation of IPC-C to form IPC-D requires CCC2, a gene encoding an intracellular Cu2+ transporter. Increased expression of CCC2 or increased Cu2+ concentration in the growth medium enhances the Ca2+ tolerance of csg1 mutants, suggesting that accumulation of IPC-C renders csg1 cells Ca2+ sensitive.

    Notes: Abstract The Russian olive tree (Elaeagnus angustifolia L.) was brought to the western United States from Eurasia during the early to mid-1900s, and has since become a common member of many riparian communities in Idaho. We compared leaf chemistry and in-stream processing of Russian olive leaves (exotic) and various species of native leaves in one hardwater and one relatively softwater Idaho stream. Measurements using air-dried leaves showed that Russian olive contained the greatest concentration of nitrogen, approximately 1.6% of the dry mass, whereas the native species each contained less than 1.0% nitrogen. The C/N ratio of Russian olive was 〈30, whereas the natives each had C/N ratios greater than 40. Results from the hardwater stream indicated no difference in 30-day loss of AFDM between Russian olive and the native leaves (dogwood and aspen). In the relatively softwater stream, the Russian olive leaves were processed significantly slower than the native leaf species (cottonwood). The results indicate that a replacement of native riparian trees by exotics, such as Russian olive, may result in slower rates of leaf processing in Idaho streams but that the effect may vary among streams. When comparing the processing of native and exotic leaf litter, initial nitrogen concentrations and initial C/N ratios of the leaves did not appear to be accurate indicators of relative decay rates.

    Notes: Abstract The thermal properties (heat capacity, thermal diffusivity, and electrical resistivity) of a Cu + 10 wt% Sn alloy in both solid and liquid phases have been reported. Using these values it was confirmed that the Lorenz relation is suitable for obtaining thermal conductivity from electrical resistivity in the liquid phase of this alloy. Also, the temperature differential (dλ/dT) obtained from such an approach was in excellent agreement with the thermal conductivity values calculated from thermal diffusivity.

    Notes: Abstract Data on the physical properties of alloys at high temperatures are urgently needed for the mathematical modeling of high-temperature processes such as casting, welding, secondary refining, dip melting, spray forming, and metal powder production. Data are required for those properties which are involved in heat and fluid flow in high-temperature processes. Levitated drop methods have been adopted to measure the surface tensions, densities, and enthalpies of commercial alloys, and rapid, transient methods have been developed to measure thermal conductivities to avoid the problem of convection. The results obtained for the properties of commercial alloys for the liquid and “mushy” states are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract A four-probe dc technique for measuring liquid-metal electrical resistivities has been developed, and liquid-resistivity measurements on gallium, tin, lead, copper, a lead tin alloy, a copper tin alloy, and a zinc alloy have been presented. The Lorenz relation has been used to calculate thermal conductivities from these resistivity measurements. The thermal conductivities calculated from these resistivity measurements are (where data are available) in good agreement with recommended liquid-metal thermal conductivities.
