    Description: The occurrence of sporadic E (Es) layer has been a hot scientific topic for a long time. Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) based Radio Occultation (RO) has been proven a powerful technique on detecting the global Es layers. In this paper, we focus on some cases of complex Es layers based on the RO data from multiple missions processed in UCAR/CDAAC. We first show some examples of multiple Es layers occurred in one RO event. Based on the evaluations between co-located simultaneous RO events and between RO and Lidar observations, it could be concluded that some of these do manifest the multiple Es layered structures. We then show a case of the occurrence of Es in a broad region during a certain time interval. The result is then validated by the independent ionosondes observations. These complex Es structures could be understood well by the popular wind shear theory. We could map the global Es occurrence routinely in the near future given that more RO data will be available. Further statistical studies will enhance our understanding on the Es mechanism. The specification on Es should benefit both the Es based long distance communication and accurate neutral RO retrievals.

    Description: Global Positioning System (GPS) radio occultation (RO) has provided continuous observations of the Earth's atmosphere since 2001 with global coverage, all-weather capability, and high accuracy and vertical resolution in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS). Precise time measurements enable long-term stability but careful processing is needed. Here we provide climate-oriented atmospheric scientists with multicenter-based results on the long-term stability of RO climatological fields for trend studies. We quantify the structural uncertainty of atmospheric trends estimated from the RO record, which arises from current processing schemes of six international RO processing centers, DMI Copenhagen, EUM Darmstadt, GFZ Potsdam, JPL Pasadena, UCAR Boulder, and WEGC Graz. Monthly-mean zonal-mean fields of bending angle, refractivity, dry pressure, dry geopotential height, and dry temperature from the CHAMP mission are compared for September 2001 to September 2008. We find that structural uncertainty is lowest in the tropics and mid-latitudes (50° S to 50° N) from 8 km to 25 km for all inspected RO variables.     Description: Successional processes are an important element of commercial-forest ecosystems. They can be followed by studying the species composition of various animal groups, e.g. millipedes. Over the vegetation periods 2009 and 2010, we pitfall-trapped millipedes and centipedes (Myriapoda: Diplopoda, Chilopoda) on 21 Western German (North Rhine-Westphalian) deciduous and coniferous forest as well as fallow-ground sites of increasing age (1–165 yr) and determined them to the species and sex. Diplopoda (2009: 1659/2010: 3417 individuals) outnumbered the trapped Chilopoda (2009: 37/2010: 111 individuals) by far while the general catching results approximately doubled from 2009 to 2010. Indirect gradient analysis (CA) revealed that the influence of the habitat type on the formation of diplopod assemblages exceeded the influence of the successional stage. Although no clear trend in individual-count development over time occurred in most species detected, Julus scandinavius (Latzel, 1884) significantly increased in numbers with ageing of the deciduous (beech) forests. In conclusion, J. scandinavius may be a suitable bioindicator of deciduous-forest succession. More data are necessary to transfer our results into a mathematical function describing the course of increasing J. scandinavius abundance.

    Description: Die quartären Ablagerungen im unteren Wehratal werden im wesentlichen als fluviale oder glazifluviale Schotter aufgefaßt. Mit Hilfe eines quartärgeologischen Längsschnittes werden die verschiedenen Schotter gegliedert und mit den Schottern des Hochrheintales korreliert. Es sind Schotter von 3 Niederterrassen (Würm), einer Hochterrasse (Kits) und Reste älterer Schotter zu erkennen. Die im Südteil von Öflingen als Rißmoräne erklärte lehmigkiesige Schicht wird als Schotterverwitterungslehm auf Niederterrasse umgedeutet. Bis zu 40 m mächtige Ablagerungen am Ost-Hang des Wehratales in Wehr werden in der Hauptsache als rißzeitliche Schuttbildung gedeutet. Die neu aufgeschürfte, 17 m mächtige, früher als Moräne beschriebene Ablagerung in Ölungen erwies sich in den oberen 12 m als glazufluvialer Schotter. Eine Blocklage an der Basis könnte eine Moräne des Kits gewesen sein, die ausgespült und etwas umgelagert worden ist. Meist am Hang abwärts verschleppte Restschotter werden von älteren Schottern hergeleitet. Überlegungen über die mögliche Größe des Nähr- und Zehrgebietes des Wiese- und Wehragletschers in der Rißeiszeit führen zu der Vorstellung, daß die Gletscher nur in den Tälern einige km aus dem Gebirge hervorgetreten sind. Für eine Gletscherüberdeckung des ganzen Dinkelberges reichte das Nährgebiet nicht aus.

    Description: Microbial food webs are critical for efficient nutrient turnover providing the basis for functional and stable ecosystems. However, the successional development of such microbial food webs and their role in "young" ecosystems is unclear. Due to a continuous glacier retreat since the middle of the 19th century, glacier forefields have expanded offering an excellent opportunity to study food web development at differently developed soils. In the present study, litter degradation and the corresponding C fluxes into microbial communities were investigated along the forefield of the Damma glacier (Switzerland). 13C-enriched litter of the pioneering plant Leucanthemopsis alpina (L.) Heywood was incorporated into the soil at sites that have been free from ice for approximately 10, 60, 100 and more than 700 years. The structure and function of microbial communities were identified by 13C analysis of phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) and phospholipid ether lipids (PLEL). Results showed increasing microbial diversity and biomass, and enhanced proliferation of bacterial groups as ecosystem development progressed. Initially, litter decomposition proceeded faster at the more developed sites, but at the end of the experiment loss of litter mass was similar at all sites, once the more easily-degradable litter fraction was processed. As a result incorporation of 13C into microbial biomass was more evident during the first weeks of litter decomposition. 13C enrichments of both PLEL and PUFA biomarkers following litter incorporation were observed at all sites, suggesting similar microbial foodwebs at all stages of soil development. Nonetheless, the contribution of bacteria and actinomycetes to litter turnover became more pronounced as soil age increased in detriment of archaea, fungi and protozoa, more prominent in recently deglaciated terrain.

    Description: The FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC (Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate) mission consisting of six Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO) satellites is the world's first demonstration constellation using radio occultation signals from Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites. The radio occultation signals are retrieved in near real-time for global weather/climate monitoring, numerical weather prediction, and space weather research. The mission has processed on average 1400 to 1800 high-quality atmospheric sounding profiles per day. The atmospheric radio occultation soundings data are assimilated into operational numerical weather prediction models for global weather prediction, including typhoon/hurricane/cyclone forecasts. The radio occultation data has shown a positive impact on weather predictions at many national weather forecast centers. A proposed follow-on mission transitions the program from the current experimental research system to a significantly improved real-time operational system, which will reliably provide 8000 radio occultation soundings per day. The follow-on mission as planned will consist of 12 satellites with a data latency of 45 min, which will provide greatly enhanced opportunities for operational forecasts and scientific research. This paper will address the FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC system and mission overview, the spacecraft and ground system performance after four years in orbit, the lessons learned from the encountered technical challenges and observations, and the expected design improvements for the new spacecraft and ground system.

    Description: This study investigates the noise level and mission-to-mission stability of Global Positioning System (GPS) radio occultation (RO) neutral atmospheric bending angle data at the UCAR COSMIC Data Analysis and Archive Center (CDAAC). Data are used from two independently developed RO instruments currently flying in orbit on the FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC (F3C) and Metop/GRAS (GNSS Receiver for Atmospheric Sounding) missions. The F3C 50 Hz RO data are post-processed with a single-difference excess atmospheric phase algorithm, and the Metop/GRAS 50 Hz closed loop and raw sampling (down-sampled from 1000 Hz to 50 Hz) data are processed with a zero-difference algorithm. The standard deviations of the F3C and Metop/GRAS bending angles from climatology between 60 and 80 km altitude from June–December 2009 are approximately 1.78 and 1.13 μrad, respectively. The F3C standard deviation reduces significantly to 1.44 μrad when single-difference processing uses GPS satellites on the same side of the spacecraft. The higher noise level for F3C bending angles can be explained by additional noise from the reference link phase data that are required with single-difference processing. The F3C and Metop/GRAS mean bending angles differences relative to climatology during the same six month period are statistically significant and have values of −0.05 and −0.02 μrad, respectively. A comparison of ~13 500 collocated F3C and Metop/GRAS bending angle profiles over this six month period shows a similar mean difference of ~0.02 ± 0.02 μrad between 30 and 60 km impact heights that is marginally significant. The observed mean difference between the F3C and Metop/GRAS bending angles of ~0.02–0.03 μrad is quite small and illustrates the high degree of re-produceability and mission independence of the GPS RO data at high altitudes. Collocated bending angles between two F3C satellites from early in the mission differ on average by up to 0.5% near the surface due to systematically lower signal-to-noise ratio for one of the satellites. Results from F3C and Metop/GRAS differences in the lower troposphere suggest the Metop/GRAS bending angles are negatively biased compared to F3C with a maximum of several percents near the surface in tropical regions. This bias is related to different tracking depths (deeper in F3C) and data gaps in Metop/GRAS which make it impossible to process the data from both missions in exactly the same way.
