Beschreibung: During the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 307 for the first time a cold-water coral carbonate mound was drilled down through its base into the underlying sediments. In the current study, sample material from within and below Challenger Mound, located in the Belgica carbonate mound province in the Porcupine Basin offshore Ireland, was investigated for its distribution of microbial communities and gas composition using biogeochemical and geochemical approaches to elucidate the question on the initiation of carbonate mounds. Past and living microbial populations are lower in the mound section compared to the underlying sediments or sediments of an upslope reference site. A reason for this might be a reduced substrate feedstock, reflected by low total organic carbon (TOC) contents, in the once coral dominated mound sequence. In contrast, in the reference site a lithostratigraphic sequence with comparatively high TOC contents shows higher abundances of both past and present microbial communities, indicating favourable living conditions from time of sedimentation until today. Composition and isotopic values of gases below the mound base seem to point to a mixed gas of biogenic and thermogenic origin with a higher proportion of biogenic gas. Oil-derived hydrocarbons were not detected at the mound site. This suggests that at least in the investigated part of the mound base the upward flow of fossil hydrocarbons, being one hypothesis for the initiation of the formation of carbonate mounds, seems to be only of minor significance.

Notizen: The effectiveness of organic mulch as a simple means of enhancing the restoration of disturbed lands by providing a competitive edge to native perennials, such as Artemisia californica (California sagebrush), over exotic annuals, such as Avena fatua (wild oat), was studied by investigating the effect of organic amendments on microbial activity and nitrogen immobilization through both soil analysis and aboveground plant growth. The addition of organic amendment resulted in an increase in microbial activity, a parallel increase in nitrogen immobilization, and no significant differences in total soil nitrogen. It is likely that nitrogen was gradually being removed from its more available form of nitrate and being immobilized in the tissues of the increasing microbial biomass. The survival rate of planted native perennial seedlings of A. californica in organic amended plots was almost double that of control-plot seedlings, and plant volume was significantly higher. When the availability of nitrogen was reduced through increased immobilization, amended plots established an environment more conducive to native perennial shrubs, allowing them to outcompete exotic annuals for water and nutrients. This simple procedure could have major implications for enhancing the restoration of disturbed lands.

Notizen: The effect of a pipeline corridor constructed through an ecological reserve in Southern California was investigated by assessing plant species composition and soil chemistry. A homogeneous plant community comprised primarily of exotic annuals was found along the entire length of the corridor. This community has low similarity to the adjacent native plant communities. Soil organic matter was significantly less on the disturbed corridor than in contiguous undisturbed areas. Both available nitrogen and extractable phosphorus values were greater in the disturbed corridor. By contrast, total nitrogen was significantly higher outside the pipeline. The more labile litter of the exotic annuals allows increased mineralization along the corridor than does the more recalcitrant litter of the native perennial shrubs in the undisturbed areas. Once established, the weedy exotic annual litter may completely turn over organic matter and nitrogen, favoring the persistence of the weedy annuals. These exotic annuals appear to be moving into three of the native communities - grassland, coastal sage, and oak woodland - that have less organic matter and a more open plant canopy. Poor restoration efforts can lead to the establishment of such exotics, subsequent invasion into the surrounding undisturbed habitat, and degradation of the reserve.
