Notes: Abstract We have applied evanescent dynamic light scattering (DLS) to study the film formation of polymer latex dispersions. A dynamical glass transition is observed. When the particles fuse, the scattering rate decreases. After fusion, a new fast process (τ r 1 ms) is observed, which is not present in bulk DLS data. We attribute the process to discontinuous relaxation of surface induced stresses (transient micro-cracks).

Notes: Abstract The generalized Veneziano Model has been applied by Chanet al. to the processes (K¯KΠN¯N) with very impressive results, but in this treatment baryon spin was neglected. In this work we give a covariant spin and isospin decomposition of the above class of processes. Postulating factorization at the lowest meson and baryon poles and using the very stringent duality diagram prescription we are led to a Veneziano type ansatz for the various invariant amplitudes.

Notes: Abstact: The kinetic energy spectrum and the polarization of the PSI neutron beam produced in the reaction 12C(p,n)X at 0° with 590 MeV polarized protons were investigated. A strong energy dependence of the neutron beam polarization is observed which was not expected at the time the neutron beam was built.

Notes: Abstract: In recent years insight has been gained into the electronic structure of layered cuprates using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. In many of these studies it is assumed that the electron-photon matrix element follows the trends set by the atomic photoionization cross sections and does not influence lineshape, dispersion and the k-dependence of the spectral intensity. In this study using Sr2CuO2Cl2 as an example it will be shown that the electron-photon matrix element can have a strong impact on both strength and shape of a feature in an angle-resolved photoelectron spectrum of a layered cuprate which can strongly affect information on character and the momentum-dependence of the energy and spectral weight of a state deduced from the spectra. The results of this study put an emphasis on the need to employ the whole parameter range of the ARPES method to get reliable information on the spectral function of cuprates for which purpose synchrotron radiation is an uniquely suited tool.

Notes: Abstract. We investigate the degradation of ZnO/CdS/ Cu(In,Ga)Se2 heterojunction solar cells for space applications and the defect generation in polycrystalline Cu(In,Ga)Se2 thin films by irradiation with 1-MeV electrons with fluences φe up to φe=5×1018 cm-2. Notable degradation of the solar cell performance starts at fluences of φe=1017 cm-2 where the open circuit voltage decreases by about 5% while short circuit current and fill factor remain essentially unaffected. Thus, Cu(In,Ga)Se2 solar cells withstand electron fluences which are higher by one order of magnitude or more when compared to other technologies. A model describes the absolute open circuit voltage loss considering the increase of space charge recombination by electron irradiation-induced defects. Defect analysis by admittance spectroscopy shows that acceptor defects with an energy distance of approximately 300 meV from the valence band are generated at a rate γ=0.017 (±0.01) cm-1.

Notes: Abstract Neurons in the olfactory deutocerebrum of the spiny lobster, Panulirus argus, were recorded intracellularly and filled with biocytin. Recorded neurons arborized in the olfactory lobe (OL), a glomerular neuropil innervated by olfactory and some presumptive mechanosensory antennular afferents. The neurons responded to chemosensory input from the lateral antennular flagellum bearing the olfactory sensilla but not the medial flagellum bearing many non-olfactory chemosensory sensilla. Many neurons received additional mechanosensory input. Thus the OL integrates specifically olfactory with mechanosensory input. OL neurons had multiglomerular arborizations restricted to one or two of the three horizontal layers of the columnar glomeruli. OL local interneurons comprised “core” neurons with tree-like neurites and terminals in the base of the glomeruli and “rim” neurons with neurites surrounding the OL and terminals in the cap/subcap. The somata of OL local interneurons lay in the medial soma cluster (100000 somata). OL projection neurons arborized in the base of the glomeruli and ascended via the olfactory glomerular tract to the lateral protocerebrum. A parallel projection pathway is constituted by projection neurons of the accessory lobe, a glomerular neuropil without afferent innervation but intimate links to the OL. The projection neuron somata constituted the lateral soma cluster (200000 somata).

Notes: Abstract Neurons in the brain of the spiny lobster that respond to chemical and mechanical stimulation of the antennule (antenna I) were recorded and stained intracellularly. Described here are neurons that do not arborize in the olfactory and accessory lobes of the deutocerebrum, but rather primarily target the lateral and/or the median antennular neuropils of the deutocerebrum. Some of the neurons also extend into the antennal and tegumentary neuropils of the tritocerebrum and the neuropils of the median protocerebrum. Included are antennular sensory afferents, antennular motoneurons, projection neurons descending from the central brain, projection neurons ascending from the central brain and projection neurons descending from the eyestalk ganglia. Collectively, these neurons consitutute a novel antennular sensory pathway that is parallel to and independent of the antennular olfactory pathway. The novel pathway integrates mechanosensory and non-olfactory chemosensory information in the lateral and/or the median antennular neuropils, which also serve as lower motor centers of the antennule. Division of the arthropod deutocerebrum into two, functionally distinct chemosensory pathways may reflect differences in how chemosensory information is processed that is fundamental to understanding the origin of the sense of smell.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary For examining the variations of the size distribution in aerosols a recording photoelectrical nucleus counter with three variable expansion degrees has been developed. It is absolutely calibrated by simultaneously photographing the fog droplets in the expansion tube and measuring the extinction. This method gives a secure calibration for every expansion ratio. The recorded concentrations are essentially higher than the values determined with the counter of Scholz, with which a calibration was made by comparison in the usual manner. In contradiction to the statements in other papers a satisfying dissolution into components can be obtained for aerosols which are not too concentrated only be very weak expansions through narrow nozzles. Instead of using the uncertain calculated supersaturation ratios the efficacy of the expansion ratios in dry resp. moist air is determined from direct measurements of the temperature decreases. With the assumption of wettable particles the supersaturation spectra obtained in this way can be transformed into size spectra. These spectra show the variations of the size distribution. The new nucleus counter functions unobjectionably and gives values which are always controlable and without subjective influences.
