Notes: The binding curves of various aminoacridines on calf thymus DNA have been determined by a spectrophotometric method. The dominant role of electrostatic forces in the interaction has been confirmed by the effect of ionic strength. Side chain and ring substituents in the aminoacridines do not inhibit binding, since this decreases in the order: acranil 〉 neomonacrin 〉 atebrin 〉 9-aminoacridine ∼ proflavine 〉 9-amino-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroacridine (THA). The last named shows the effect of diminishing the flat area of the rings in the aminoacridines. The shape of the binding curves of proflavine, 9-aminoacridine, and THA on thermally denatured DNA show that about 30-50% more binding sites are available to these cations on denatured DNA than on native DNA, but that the binding constants are the same. These observations are discussed in relation to the intercalation and other models for the interaction. It is concluded that exact and complete intercalation is not a necessary condition of strong binding and that other, less regular, models, in which the positive ring nitrogens of the acridines are close to the DNA phosphates and the acridine rings partially interact with the DNA base rings, are probably more consistent with the effect of denaturation of DNA on the binding curves which are characteristic of the interaction in solution.

Notes: The intrinsic, viscosities at zero shear rate of defined complexes of proflavine, 9-aminoacridine, and 9-amino-l,2,3,4-tetrahydroaeridine with calf thymus DNA have been determined at, various ionic strengths by means of rotating cylinder viscometers. By controlled adjustment, of the composition of the mixtures, the amount of bound acridine (r moles/g.-atom DNA phosphorus) was maintained constant at different dilutions. The intrinsic viscosities of the complexes increased with r up to r values (ca. 0.16-0.20) corresponding to the end of the process of strong binding of the acridinium cations. However, complex formation between the acridines and thermally denatured DNA caused either a marked decrease in viscosity (at the low ionic strengths of 0.0015 and 0.005) or no change at all (ionic strength 0.1). These results are discussed in the light of presently available hydrodynamic theories relating the intrinsic, viscosity of DNA to its molecular extension.

Notes: Exposure of polyethylene film to UV radiation at wavelengths of ≤2537 Å is sufficient to induce surface crosslinking and to facilitate the formation of strong adhesive joints to these surfaces with conventional adhesives. Reduction of the vapor pressure in the reaction vessel to about 1 torr apparently maximizes the efficiency of the crosslinking process. Examination of the treated films which have been exposed for times necessary to form strong adhesive joints has revealed an absence of surface oxidation. It appears that crosslinking to improve the mechanical strength of the surface region of the polyethylene is sufficient to allow the formation of strong adhesive joints.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosive wear - an example for the behavior of Materials under Combined Mechanical Stress and Chemical Attack. Studies of wear superposed by chemical attack are described. These experiments have been suggested by damages in practice. Thereby too less attention is paid particularly to the possibility of coworking of wear and corrosion. Therefore the origin of these defects often have been misinterpreted.

Description / Table of Contents: Influence of austenite stability of 18-8 Cr-Ni-steels on the cold working and corrosion properties of these steelsThe martensite formed during cold working has a negative effect on uniform corrosion only when the specimen is active in the particular medium; if so, corrosion current density increases with the degree of cold working. The martensite generated by cold working reduces on the other hand the susceptibility to intercrystalline corrosion and - in amounts up tn 2% - increases the time to failure in stress corrosion cracking (15 and 45 kp/mm2). The pitting potential is not shifted by the martensite, but pit density increases with the martensite content. In the Kesternich test no negative effect of the martensite is found. It is therefore concluded that reducing the Ni content in 18-8 steels improves workability without having a pronounced deleterions bearing on corrosion behaviour.

Description / Table of Contents: Contribution to the stress corrosion cracking of austenitic CrNi steels in MgCl2, solution of various concentrations at defined electrochemical conditionsSCC tests in aqueous MgCl2 solutions of various concentrations, temperatures and aeration conditions have been used to determine the influence of sample pre-treatment, oxygen supply at the materials surface, type of loading and the effect of various metallic coatings on the useful life of austenitic CrNi steels. In addition, feasible ways have been studied for achieving a better reproducibility of results, e.g. by lowering MgCl2 concentration or by introducing defined preset potentials or impressed currents. The behaviour of the individual steels in various MgCl2, solutions has been studied on the basis of current density-potential curves.

Description / Table of Contents: A new weldable ultra high strength steelThe paper deals with a new maraging steel containing 18% Ni, 7% Co, and 5% Mo.The material can easily be machined and formed in the annealed martensitic condition and welded without difficulties. Containing maximum 0,03%C the material is practically free of carbon and requires a simple aging treatment at 480°C in order to achieve its high strength of more than 180 kp/mm2/. The aging treatment leads to precipitation of intermetallic phases. The steel is also weldable in the maraged condition. In order to achieve a strength efficiency of 0,95 in the weldments, only a repeated aging treatment at 480°C is necessary.

Description / Table of Contents: Crack and fracture formation in austenitic CrNi steels in the specific conditions of stress corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigueEven in media producing stress corrosion craking the fatigue component dominates at frequencies around 50 Hz and is noticable at frequencies as low as 30 Hz. A typical feature of such failures is the appearance of intercrystalline fracture regions in the range of low crack propagation velocities. With decreasing tolerable load the fatigue component effect gradually disappears and crack formation is initiated by localized attack from the surrounding medium.

Description / Table of Contents: Cathodic protection during corrosion fatigueThe reactions taking place during corrosion fatigue in the active state may be inhibited, at application of cathodic protection. Galvanostatic circuiting is to be preferred to the potentiostatic system. Protection conditions depend from the aggressivity of the electrolyte, the resistance of the material and the flow conditions at the material surface, but scarcely from electrolyte conductivity. Since the incubation period is influenced by cathodic protection in a more pronounced way than crack propagation it may be assumed that cathodic protection gives rise to an initial inhibition of the aggressivity of the medium. Only when the effect of cathodic protection is lost and corrosion fatigue proceeds in a normal way.
