    Notizen: A new mode of 0°–360° bistable twisted nematic (BTN) liquid crystal display is developed by using a parameter space method. This new mode possesses a large dΔn value that provides a possibility of using a 4.8–7 μm cell gap and a 6.5 V operating voltage for the new 0°–360° BTN cells. The high-contrast ratios above 80 within −80°–80° viewing-angle ranges are obtained experimentally in a horizontal direction, and the highest contrast ratio achieved is up to 250. In the contrast ratio, the experiment's results concur with the simulation results. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The contrast ratios of reflective bistable twisted nematic liquid crystal displays with a rear quarter-wave film are optimized by means of a parameter space approach. By plotting the contrast ratio as a function of the twist angle and thickness-birefringence product (dΔn) of the display, the regions where the displays show the best contrast ratio are clearly shown. Both the absolute reflectance and the wavelength dispersion of two bistable twisted states are investigated. It is confirmed that superhigh contrast ratio (infinite in principle), reflectance about 95% with polarized-light input, a large dΔn value (0.63 μm), and low dispersion are possible for such reflective bistable liquid crystal display. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: In this article, we present a study on construction and characterization of a heating stage compatible to commercially available scanning probe microscopes working in contact and tapping modes. Thermal properties of the heating stage have been characterized. With the heating stage, sample surface temperature can reach as high as 215 °C while the scanner temperature is kept below 125 °C. Below 50 °C, the stage temperature is very stable, with fluctuations less than 0.05 °C within half an hour. In both the contact and tapping mode of the force microscope, the image distortions have been calibrated, which occurs due to the decrease of piezoelectric coefficient at high temperature. It has been found that a cork wood spacer is excellent for thermal isolation to prevent the scanner from overheating. Examples of applications of the heating stage will be presented and discussed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: We introduce a method to investigate the domain stability issue based on piezoresponse microscopy. The switching and back-switching processes of sol–gel derived (Pb0.76Ca0.24)TiO3 thin films were investigated by comparing the local piezoelectric hysteresis loops in continuous mode and pulse mode. It was found that the local hysteresis loops acquired by the pulse mode in shorter pulse width were dominated by the back-switching process while the continuous mode piezoelectric hysteresis loop provides information on the domain switching process. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: We have successfully dispersed silicon nanowires in liquid by a mild etching treatment. A transmission electron microscopic study reveals that the etching occurs selectively at the defect sites of the wires. This implies that the treated wires have much fewer defects than those of the raw material. We have adopted an electrophoresis method, which is usually used in biosciences, to mount single nanowires onto chosen electrodes of a prototype device. The mounting of the wires was checked using scanning probe microscopes. Compared with the commonly used microactuation method, our method is far more applicable to industrial device fabrication, which may require simultaneous manipulation of a large number of wires. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: In this letter we present an investigation on probing leakage current and ferroelectricity of Pb(Zr, Ti)O3(PZT)/YBa2Cu3Ox heterostructure using a modified atomic force microscopy. Inhomogeneities of leakage current and ferroelectric properties were concurrently mapped and quantitatively studied on a nanometer scale. It shows that microscopically the leakage current can be described by a model based on space-charge-limited current. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Red light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with both a conventional bilayer structure and a double heterostructure (DH) have been investigated. In these LEDs, N,N′-bis-(1-naphthl)-diphenyl-1, 1′-biphenyl-4,4′-diamine (NPB), 2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (BCP), and tris(8-quinolinolato) aluminum (Alq3) were used as hole-transporting, hole-blocking, and electron-transporting layers, respectively. The bilayer and DH LEDs had a configuration of ITO/NPB/Alq3:red dopant/Alq3/MgAg and ITO/NPB/Alq3:red dopant/BCP/Alq3/MgAg, respectively. Three kinds of red fluorescent dyes—nile red, DCJTB, and DCM—were used as dopants. Compared with the bilayer structures, the luminance efficiencies of the DH LEDs were found to increase as much as 100%. We attribute the efficiency enhancement to the formation of a narrow recombination zone, in which both charge carriers and excitons were confined. High charge concentrations in the emissive layer resulted in efficient collision capture in the electron–hole recombination process. Exciton confinement led to improved energy transfer. The two factors were simultaneously operating and consequently benefitted from efficiency enhancement. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Organic electroluminescent devices with a structure of ITO/ploy (9-vinylcarbazole)/tris (8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq3)/Mg:Ag are fabricated at different substrate temperatures (77, 298, and 438 K) during Alq3 deposition. It is found that the surface morphologies of Alq3 thin films greatly affect the I–V characteristics of the devices by the contact area between metal cathode and light-emitting layer. There is an increase in the luminous efficiency of the devices in the order 77 K〈298 K〈438 K. We attribute this trend to different structures of Alq3 thin films. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Abstract Organic multiple quantum wells (MQWs) white light emitting devices are fabricated in which blue fluorescent dye, a trimer of N-anylbenzimidazole (TPBI) and orange fluorescent rubrene doped tris (8-hydroxyquinoline) Aluminum act as quantum-well light emitting layers between triphenyldiamine derivative (TPD) potential barrier layers, and aluminium complex (Alq) act as an electron transporter and green emitter. The injected carriers are confined in different quantum wells and Alq layer. The white light emission comes from a combination of photons generated in different light emitting layers. The Commission Internationale de l' Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of the emitted light are tuned by increasing the number of TPBI wells due to its low fluorescent efficiency compared with rubrene.
