    Description: We describe seven Paleocene to lowermost Eocene sequences in core holes at Island Beach, Bass River, Ancora, Millville, and Sea Girt, NJ (Ocean Drilling Program Leg 150X, 174AX) and analyze benthic foraminiferal assemblages to assess paleodepth changes within sequences. These sequences are referred to as Pa0, Pa1a, Pa1b, Pa2a, Pa2b, Pa3a, and Pa3b. Paleocene sequence boundaries are identified by unconformities and variations in benthic foraminiferal biofacies. We used Q-mode factor analysis and paleoslope modeling to identify three distinct middle-outer neritic benthic foraminiferal assemblages and their associated water depths. Paleodepths during the early Paleocene and deposition of Pa0, Pa1a, and Pa2b were ~80 m with ~20 m changes across sequence boundaries. A long-term shallowing occurred through the late Paleocene where paleodepths were ~50-70 m in Pa3a. This trend drastically changes in the earliest Eocene where the paleodepths of sequence Pa3b were ~120-150 m. New Jersey Paleocene sequence boundaries correlate with those in other regions and with d18O increases in the deep sea, suggesting Paleocene eustatic lowerings were associated with ice-growth events.

    Description: A thick, apparently continuous section recording events of the latest Paleocene thermal maximum in a neritic setting was drilled at Bass River State Forest, New Jersey as part of ODP Leg 174AX [Miller, Sugarman, Browning et al., 1998]. Integrated nannofossil and magneto-stratigraphy provides a firm chronology supplemented by planktonic foraminiferal biostratigraphy. This chronologic study indicates that this neritic section rivals the best deep-sea sections in providing a complete record of late Paleocene climatic events. Carbon and oxygen isotopes measured on benthic foraminifera show a major (4.0% in carbon, 2.3% in oxygen) negative shift correlative with the global latest Paleocene carbon isotope excursion (CIE). A sharp increase in kaolinite content coincides with the isotope shift in the Bass River section, analogous to increases found in several other records. Carbon and oxygen isotopes remain low and kaolinite content remains high for the remainder of the depositional sequence above the CIE (32.5 ft, 9.9 m), which we estimate to represent 300-500 k.y. We interpret these data as indicative of an abrupt shift to a warmer and wetter climate along the North American mid-Atlantic coast, in concert with global events associated with the CIE.

    Description: We propose a phenomenon termed “pre-extinction dwarfing” in Cenozoic planktonic foraminifera. High-resolution morphometric analysis shows a reduction in maximum or mean test size in the 2-20 kyr interval preceding the extinction of Pliocene Globorotalia exilis and Globorotalia miocenica from the Caribbean Sea and middle Eocene Morozovelloides crassatus from the western North Atlantic. Through a series of case studies and review of qualitative observations from the literature, we suggest that dwarfing occurs in a number of species of planktonic foraminifera foreshadowing their demise and that such size changes are not just a phenomenon associated with mass extinction events. We propose that this is a common stress-induced pattern that results in diminutive size in the pre-extinction interval.
