Notes: The transport equations for a power law fluid are used to solve the transient and non-isothermal problem of filling a disk-shaped cavity. Using the results obtained it is possible to predict gate pressures, fill times and short shots. Furthermore, the velocity and temperature fields can be obtained throughout the filling process. This information specifies the formation of a frozen surface layer during filling. Rigid PVC was primarily used in the simulations, but some results are also given for linear polyethylene, nylon 6-6, ABS and polystyrene.

Notes: A Burnett type of apparatus was built for 12,000 lb./sq.in. pressure and temperatures of 25° to 100°C. Isothermal expansions were run on methane, ethylene, and four binary mixtures at 25°, 50°, and 75°C., and compressibility factors were derived from the pressure ratio observations. From the experimental data, second and third virial coefficients were derived by two techniques, that is, the slope-intercept and the multiple regressions curve-fit of the data by the density-series virial equation. A comparison of these virial coefficients with those from the different empirical equations of state indicates areas of needed improvements in these equations. Second virial cross coefficients were also obtained.

Notes: A gradientless reactor has been tested by measurement of the chemical reaction rate in the synthesis of methanol from carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The reactor behaves as a well-stirred tank, and data have been obtained at 3,000 lb./sq.in.abs. over the temperature range 300° to 400°C.Rate data have been obtained for commercial zinc chromite catalyst in particle form and for the commercial ¼-in. pellets. The effectiveness factors derived from these experiments have been used to estimate the tortuosity of the pellets; it is found to agree qualitatively with the value measured from experiments on pure diffusion in a catalyst pellet.

Notes: The processes of absorption and desorption with reversible reaction are compared theoretically for reactions of the type A ⇌ nB. With the same concentration difference between bulk and interface, it is found that in general, the rate of desorption is lower than that of absorption. Under certain conditions the difference may be as much as 35%.The analysis is based on the penetration theory. The numerical solution introduces a new transformation of the time and distance variables (based on the error function) which reduces the computing time required. An analytical examination of the penetration theory equations provides an explanation of the results of the numerical solution.

Notes: Effective experimental and theoretical techniques for studying the heat transfer characteristics of a stationary evaporating meniscus formed on a flat plate immersed in a pool of liquid were developed. Integral heat transfer data were obtained for the four systems: 304 stainless steel-water, 6061 aluminum-water, 304 stainless steel-methanol, and 6061 aluminum-methanol. High rates of heat transfer were obtained in the triple interline region with a stable meniscus. Detailed descriptions of the heat flux and temperature field were obtained for the stainless steel-water and stainless steel-methanol systems. The effect of the evaporation coefficient on the heat flux distribution was evaluated. The heat transfer process in the interline region proved to be more efficient than a simple conduction process in an evaporating liquid meniscus.

Notes: The nonisothermal unreacted-core-shrinking model with unsteady state heat transfer analysis has been experimentally evaluated. The system studied is the combustion of a single agglomerated carbon-fire clay sphere in a thermobalance. By comparing the experimental results with those predicted by the model, it is concluded that the model adequately describes the reaction system under the experimental conditions such that the ash layer diffusion is rate controlling.

Notes: The extension of the Enskog theory by Tham and Gubbins for the calculation of diffusivities is applied to the prediction of infinite dilution diffusion coefficients in binary organic systems. The resulting expression is a function only of the size and mass of the diffusing species. Excellent agreement is obtained for nonassociating n-alkane mixtures as well as for associated systems. Extension of the expression to alcohol and aqueous systems is shown to require Only an empirical correction factor. It is also shown that the quantity Dij∞ ηj Mj/ρjT is independent of temperature for all systems.

Notes: Atactic polystyrene was molded at pressures up to 3000 atmospheres, and the effects of this pressure history were studied by permeability measurements using helium, neon, and argon as probe molecules. The permeabilities were significantly reduced by molding at higher pressures. The diffusion coefficients decreased monotonically with molding pressure, reflecting more extensive interchain cohesion. In contrast, the solubility coefficients showed a broad minimum around a molding pressure of 1000 atm, indicating that changes in local order were induced by higher pressures. These changes were shown to affect permeation, mechanical characteristics, and other properties. An optimum molding pressure somewhat below 1000 atm is indicated for polystyrene.
