    Notes: The change in apparent molal volume φ of DNA on thermal denaturation in carbonate buffer at pH 11.0 has been determined by the dilatometric method. It was found that φ increases sigmoidally during the helix-coil transition. Several methods, including a colorimetric technique that closely simulates the conditions used in the dilatometric experiments, were employed to estimate the protons lost by the DNA during the transition. These measurements indicated that the extent of the proton loss depends on the counterion present, increasing in the order Li+ 〈 Na+ 〈 K+ 〈 Cs+. The major part of the volume changes observed during the denaturation is due to the volume changes expected to accompany the transfer of protons from the bases guanine and thym ne to carbonate ions. As has been previously reported for the denaturation of DNA at neutral pH, the volume change directly due to the change in shape of the polymer molecules is so small as to be experimentally undetectable.

    Notes: ESR and electrical conductivity measurements have been made on a recently prepared polymer, polypropiolamide. The polymer was obtained as a fine powder which exhibited a nearly Lorentzian line with a width between derivative maxima of 5.2 ± 0.1 gauss and a g value of 2.0036 ± 0.0005. The signal intensity increased with increasing molecular weight. The signal was retained in a dilute solution in formic acid with a slight narrowing of the line. Permanent changes were produced in the spectra at room temperature by heat treatments of the polymer at temperatures up to 800°K. The changes were similar for samples sealed in tubes containing air, dry nitrogen gas and a vacuum of 3 × 10-5 mm of Hg. Spectra obtained at temperatures up to 500°K showed no dependence on the presence or absence of oxygen in the ambient atmosphere. The deresistance of pressed pellets of the polymer was measured in the temperature range 450°K to 525°K, and the results were described by the relation R = R0cE/kT. The activation energy E had a value of 1.2 ± 0.2 ev and the resistivity at 500°K was approximately 1013 ohm-em. The ESR signal is attributed to an intrinsic property of the polymer which is associated with a conjugated bond system along the polymer backbone. Neither the activation energy nor the magnitude of the resistivity suggest that the delocalized electrons associated with the conjugated bond system have produced unusual electrical characteristics in the polymer.

    Notes: A generalized form of the equations of linear viscoelasticity is presented which enables theoretical treatment of situations where a material is not at equilibrium with its environment and/or is subjected to a changing environment. These generalized equations are used successfully to predict the recovery behavior of wool and nylon fibers from bending deformations in experiments involving conditions of changing temperature and relative humidity.

    Notes: Diffusion coefficients of binary solutions can be measured accurately by observation at long times of isothermal diffusion in a vertical cell closed at the ends (restricted diffusion). The present analysis, which accounts for the effects of solvent flux and variable solution properties, demonstrates that the experiment yields a well-defined, differential diffusion coefficient, even in concentrated solutions.Observation is effected by Rayleigh interference optics, and results for aqueous potassium chloride solutions confirm the accuracy of the method.

    Notes: The equilibrium distribution of mercuric chloride between aqueous sodium chloride solutions and a solution of tri-isooctylamine in xylene has been measured. The dependence on pH, amine concentration, mercury level, and temperature has been determined. At low pH mercury is extracted quite effectively with a distribution coefficient as high as 2,000. At high pH the mercury can be stripped from the organic solution. This extraction system offers the possibility of an effective mercury separation process for chlorine plant brines or chloride-based mercury leach liquors.A theoretical model of the extraction equilibria is developed to facilitate interpolation of the experimental data.

    Notes: In order to make the kinetic theory of liquid viscosity tractable, an approximate from is suggested for the perturbation of the radial distribution function of a monatomic liquid by a nonuniform flow field. Substitution of this form into the microscopic expression for the pressure tensor yields an equation for liquid viscosity in terms of the equilibrium distribution function and the interatomic potential energy function. This equation establishes the basis for a corresponding states correlation of the viscosity of liquid metals based on atomic parameters.The viscosity data for twenty-one molten metals are made to fall on a single curve by the adjustment of one microscopic parameter. It is found that this empirically determined parameter has the proper fundamental significance. Therefore it is possible to estimate it independently and to use the general correlation for estimating the viscosity of a metal for which data are not available. Also it is suggested that the atomic parameters determined from viscosity data in this way might be used to correlate other properties of the liquid metals.

    Notes: The problem of mercury losses from chlorine plants is reviewed. The mercury material balance is difficult to establish because mercury escapes from the process by a number of routes. Some of the reasons for the mercury emissions are explored, and some problems involved in the measurement of mercury in various effluents are discussed.A number of mercury containment processes for specific streams have already been proposed, but the need for an integrated mercury recycle policy still exists.

    Notes: Dilatometric measurements were made to determine the change in apparent specific volume ϕ of DNA resulting from thermal denaturation in neutral solution, ϕ increased continuously with temperature in the range 10-85°C. No deviations from a monotonically rising curve were observed in the ϕ versus temperature profile in the region of the melting temperature. The results are interpreted in terms of a partial loss of the preferentially bound DNA hydration shell. The nature of the well known buoyant density difference between native and denatured DNA was investigated by evaluating the densities in a series of cesium salt gradients at constant temperature. Extrapolation of the results to zero water activity indicates that the partial specific volumes of anhydrous native and denatured DNA are equal. The density difference at nonzero water activities is attributed to decreased hydration in the denatured state. The absence of a related change in ϕ accompanying the denaturation in the dilatometric experiments suggests that the probable volume change associated with loss of bound water during denaturation is accompanied by other compensatory volume effects. The possible nature of these volume effects is discussed.
