Notes: Summary It was considered that double-blind crossover studies of therapeutic efficacy after acute injury could well be done in patients who required surgical removal of impacted wisdom teeth from both sides of the lower jaw. In the present trial 24 healthy patients received either placebo or ibuprofen (Brufen®: 400 mg three times daily), a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent, for 5 days commencing the day before surgery. Treatments were given on the two occasions when impacted wisdom teeth were to be removed from one side or other of the lower jaw. A number of objective and subjective parameters were recorded for paired comparison of the post-operative courses, including swelling, trismus and pain. A mechanical device which allows simple and accurate measurement of cheek swelling is described. On the 1st, 3rd and 5th post-operative days in the ibuprofen group the measured swelling averaged 93, 89 and 82%, respectively, of that in the placebo group; the corresponding α-values were 0.35, 0.06 and 0.07. Patients with less swelling after ibuprofen were not always those with a high serum concentration of the drug. Ibuprofen significantly reduced pain on the day of the operation. This may at least partly account for less trismus and the preference of the patients for their post-operative courses with ibuprofen. Examination of various haematological parameters did not reveal any significant difference between the two operations. Subjective scores indicated that neither wound-healing nor bleeding was affected by ibuprofen, nor were any side effects detected.

Notes: Abstract Peristerite feldspars from Seiland in Norway have been studied by a combination of transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. The different types of microtextures have been correlated with the local mean composition, and it is found that the miscibility gap between An4 and An17 extends into the ternary Or—Ab—An region. The orientation of the more common type of exsolution lamellae varies from (08¯1) to about (¯1, 21, ¯2) with increasing potassium content.

Notes: Abstract Ab initio molecular orbital calculations using both minimal and extended basis sets have been applied to two isoelectronic sets of molecules. One set corresponds to the 18 electron species H3NO, H3CO− and H3COH while the second set contains the 42 electron fluorinated molecules F3NO, F3CO− and F3COH. The geometries of these molecules have been optimized, using both the minimal STO-3G and the extended 4-31G basis sets. These comparative calculations reveal that the 4-31G basis produced structural parameters in much better agreement with experiment. The effect of includingd-orbitals in the basis set was also investigated. For the fluorinated oxides it has been found that the optimized 4-31G structures were only slightly altered by the addition ofd-orbitals. For H3NO, on the other hand, the inclusion ofd-orbitals considerably shortens the N-O bond distance. Both H3NO and CF3OH, which are unknown experimentally, are theoretically predicted to be capable of existence. The electronic structures of these molecules have also been examined using electronic partitioning according to the Mulliken scheme.

Notes: Abstract The production of iron silicide layers by the vapour deposition of silicon on to iron has been studied over the temperature range 800 to 1200° C. Silicon was deposited from silicon tetrachloride by either a combination of hydrogen reduction and replacement reaction with the iron substrate or by the replacement reaction alone. In the combined process, at temperatures in the range 800 to 1100° C, the deposition occurs by at least 75% hydrogen reduction. At temperatures above 1100° C the rate of the replacement reaction increases more rapidly than that of the hydrogen reduction process, and so the replacement reaction accounts for more than 25% of the overall depostion. The growth morphologies of the layers have been studied as a function of deposition temperature by scanning electron microscopy. The morphologies obtained in the combined process are shown to agree with general predictions based on the effects of gas phase supersaturation on vapour growth morphologies. The deposits produced by replacement alone are shown to vary from having a vapour-etched crystalline morphology to having a flat porous morphology as the deposition temperature is increased.

Notes: Abstract An electron microscopic study of the twinning and exsolution textures in one hydrothermal and two pegmatitic amazonites from southern Norway is reported. From observations of three types of interfaces: between twins, between domains twinned on different laws and between Na- and K-feldspar domains, perthitic textures involving low albite lenses up to 10 μm long in a twinned microcline matrix are shown to result from exsolution from the triclinic phase. Complex twinning on albite and pericline laws is suggested to be the result of strains induced by exsolution. Other textures, involving the late introduction of Na at low temperature in a pegmatite and the occurrence of Pb-rich and plagioclase crystallites in a hydrothermal amazonite, are described.

Notes: Abstract Elastic energy calculations based upon the coherent model of Willaime and Brown [Acta Cryst. A30, 316–331 (1974)] have been carried out for some exsolution textures in peristerite and Böggild intergrowths. For peristerites it is demonstrated that substitution of K for Na moves the orientation of the exsolution lamellae from (08 $$\overline {\text{1}} $$ ) to about ( $$\overline {\text{1}} $$ , 21, $$\overline {\text{2}} $$ ) in agreement with observations. An electron microscope study of exsolution textures in labradorite and andesine plagioclases has been carried out and information about small structural differences in these lamellar structures has been obtained from elastic energy calculations.

Notes: Summary Mitochondria of normal myocardial cells of the sand rat and the mouse as well as of the left ventricle of man, have been examined for their content of calcium. Ultrahistochemistry and X-ray microanalysis revealed two basically different inclusions: Osmiophilic mitochondrial granules and Spherical mitochondrial particles. Osmiophilic mitochondrial granules were found in conventionally fixed and plastic embedded tissues as well as in cryosections of chemically fixed and sucrose infused tissues. Such granules lacked inert electron density and probably consisted mainly of unsaturated lipids. X-ray spectra obtained from these tissues revealed no peaks for calcium. Spherical mitochondrial particles were present in dry-cut cryo-sections of N2-frozen tissues not treated by fixatives and/or cryoprotectants. These particles were deeply electron dense in unstained, freeze-dried cryo-sections. They usually measured from 600Å–900Å in diameter in the normal myocardium of the sand rat and the mouse and from 250 Å–400Å in diameter in the left ventricular myocardium of man. Significant calcium peaks could be identified in the X-ray spectra of these particles, whereas none occurred in the analyses of other tissue regions. Potassium was detected with about equal frequency in the particles and in other parts of the tissue. On the basis of the inert electron density of the particles and their absence in chemically fixed tissues as well as of the results of the X-ray analysis, it is concluded that they contain precipitates of extremely labile ions of mitochondrial calcium.
