Notes: Abstract Oligodeoxynucleotides complementary to the deduced mRNA sequence of soybean Kunitz trypsin inhibitor (KTI) were used to prime the synthesis of cDNA from soybean cotyledon total poly(A) RNA. The primed cDNA was used to select clones from a Glycine max cotyledon cDNA library. Two out of twelve hybridizing clones were shown to contain KTI cDNA. The nucleotide sequence of one clone, pSTI 9-2, was determined and it was found to encompass the complete protein coding region of KTI excet for three C-terminal residues. Trypsin inhibitor is synthesized with a 25 amino acid hydrophobic N-terminal sequence presumed to be a signal peptide. The mature polypeptide encoded by pSTI 9-2 agrees with the published amino acid composition of KTI, but contains two discrepancies at the peptide sequence level.

Notes: Summary Rabbit antibody to calf adenosine deaminase (ADA) was used to localize this enzyme in tissues of the young rat and calf by the immunoperoxidase method. The distribution patterns of ADA in most tissues were similar for both species. Within the thymus gland, the enzyme was strongly expressed predominantly in cortical lymphocytes. In the spleen and lymph nodes, most lymphocyles of T-cell areas stained weakly for ADA, whereas only a small number of ADA-positive cells were found in B-cell areas. Clumps of strongly ADA-positive mononuclear blastoid and plasma cells were observed in the medullary regions of lymph nodes, around peri-arteriolar lymphocyte sheaths and in the red pulp of the spleen, and in the lamina propria of the intestine. Double immunofluorescence staining studies in the rat showed that some of these blastoid cells contained both ADA and immunoglobulins and appeared to be plasmablasts. Strong staining for ADA was also found, in both the rat and calf, in as yet unidentified mononuclear blastoid cells in the inter-stitium of non-lymphoid organs (kidney, heart, lung), in endothelial cells of some arterioles and capillaries, and in Kupffer cells of the liver. In addition, ADA was strongly expressed in calf bile canaliculi. These studies define areas in rat and calf tissues which contain ADA-positive cells and provide a model system for investigations of the relationship between ADA and the function and development of these cells.

Notes: Summary Koop [1967] proved that interpenetrating samples of unequal sizes are more efficient than those with equal sizes for estimating a finite population total. After observing that there is a serious lacuna present in his proof, a correct proof has been suggested. The optimum choice of individual sample sizes has also been discussed for a given (i) total sample size, (ii) cost and (iii) precision, with an assumed cost structure. Finally, the resulting estimators have been compared with those based on a single sample.

Notes: Summary Almost unbiased ratio and product type estimators have been obtained with the help of the Jack-Knifing technique for simple random sampling in two phases. The mean square errors of the resulting estimators have been compared with those of the corresponding usual (biased) estimators and it has been found that they are approximately same. This study generalizes similar single sampling results ofDurbin [1959],Shukla [1976] and others.

Notes: Abstract When grains of a sediment sample are separated by sieving into a number of size classes, the weight of the grains belonging to a particular size-class is called the weight frequency of that class. That the weight frequencies cannot be used as simple frequencies for the calculation of the mean and standard deviation of size of grains is well known. A method is developed in this paper for estimating these two as well as a third parameter, named shape parameter, by minimizing a quadratic form that arises naturally as an analogue of the χ 2 statistic. Two fully worked out numerical examples, with simulated data, are presented to illustrate the method. A computer program in FORTRAN language is also appended. Comparative study shows that the quicker conventional method used by geologists may produce reasonably good estimates of standard deviation when the sample size is large, but the estimates of mean may show large deviations.

Notes: Abstract This essay aims at constructing an abstract mathematical system which, when interpreted, serves to portray group-choices among alternatives that need not be quantifiable. The system in question is a complete distributive lattice, on which a class of non-negative real-valued homomorphisms is defined. Reinforced with appropriate axioms, this class becomes a convex distributive lattice. If this lattice is equipped with a suitable measure, and if the mentioned class of homomorphisms is equipped with a metric, then the class and its convex sets are seen to possess certain characteristic properties. The main result (Theorem 6) follows from a combination of these results and a famous result due to Choquet. The mathematical scheme is then interpreted in the subject-language of ‘choice among alternatives’. It is shown, by means of an example, that the system furnishes all the ingredients for describing multi-group choices. Whether or not the same ingredients are also adequate for a behavioural theory of multi-group choices is an issue that will not be gone into. However, the example effectively illustrates how a process of bargaining can be described with the aid of the mathematical scheme. In the second example, a class of bargaining situations is modelled in the symbolism of linear programming with several objective functions combined with unknown ‘weights’; the ‘cost’ vectors in such formulations are identified with homomorphisms, and the main theorem of this essay is applied.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents a study of the experimental lower boundb L, on the root-mean-squared impact parameter of the multiparticle production in 70 GeV/c p-nucleon interaction. It has been observed that theb L decreases with increasing final state multiplicity (n) at this fixed energy. The results are in good agreement with those of other authors.

Notes: Abstract Callus cultures were established from node and internode segments of Dioscorea floribunda Mart. & Gal. Both Murashige and Skoog's and modified White's medium supported callusing as well as organogenesis when supplemented with either 2,4-D or NAA in combination with BAP or Kn. On development of shoot primordia, calli were transferred to unsupplemented, half strength MS basal medium. This procedure led to the increase in formation of shoots. Several ‘crops’ of shoots were obtained from single differentiating callus cultures by excising the shoots and subculturing the residual part. Seventy percent of plantlets survived rooting and transfer to soil. When they were maintained in half-strength MS basal medium and 0.5 mg1-1 of NAA, 70% of plantlets formed aerial tubers at nodes. These tubers produced both roots and shoots and could be detached from the mother plant.

Notes: Abstract The present paper deals with a class of nonzero-sum, two-person games with finite strategies when there are constraints on the strategies selected by the players. The constraints arise due to the subjective difficulty that each player often has in assigning to the states probabilities with which he is completely satisfied, and the model specifies how much each player must perturb his initial probability estimate in order to change his maximum utility alternative from the alternative originally best under the initial estimate. It is shown that the Nash-equilibrium solution of this class of nonzero-sum games can be characterized by an equivalent nonlinear program which leads in some cases to a pair of complementary eigenvalue problems. Applications to normal or approximate solutions of linear programming problems are also indicated.
