    Notes: The nonlinear response of a two-state chemical transition to an oscillating electric field is examined. A reaction for which this analysis is particularly relevant is a conformational transition of a membrane protein exposed to an ac electric field. Even a modest externally applied field leads to a very large local field within the membrane. This gives rise to nonlinear behavior. The applied ac field causes harmonics in the polarization and can cause a dc shift in the state occupancy, both of which can be observed and used to determine kinetic parameters. Fourier coefficients are calculated for the enzyme state probability in the ac field, exactly for infinite frequency, and in powers of the field for finite frequency. Kramers–Kronig relations are proved and response functions are given for the leading terms of the harmonics. The results are extended to the spherical symmetry relevant to suspensions of spherical cells, vesicles, or colloidal particles. If the protein catalyzes a reaction, free energy is transduced from the electric field to the output reaction, even if that reaction is electrically silent. Many transport enzymes are ideal examples. The ac field can cause the enzyme to pump ions or molecules through the membrane against an (electro)chemical potential. The efficiency of this energy transduction can be as high as 25%.

    Notes: Dielectric relaxation studies of bovine ligamentum nuchae are reported over the frequency range of 1 MHz to 1 GHz and over the temperature range of 23-48°C. A temperature-dependent relaxation process was observed at low megahertz-frequency with the correlation time of around 40 ns. The result is quite similar to that of a synthetic polypentapeptide (VPGVG) and of α-elastin. The relaxation is proposed to arise in part from the peptide libration within the polypentapeptide of bovine ligamentum nuchae.

    Notes: Abstract Heavy metal residues (i.e., As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Mn, Hg, and Zn) were determined in striated muscle of 268 fish specimens harvested during a 5-yr period (1980–1984) from several aquatic systems in east Tennessee (U.S.A.). Elevated concentrations of Hg, Mn, and Cd were found in the muscle of fish from several of the aquatic systems studied; concentrations of Hg exceeded the U.S. Food and Drug Administration action level of 1.0 ppm for food intended for human consumption. In general, the concentrations of the other metals in fish muscle were low. Moreover, muscle metal content did not vary among the three fish groups (i.e., game fish, catfish, and rough fish) investigated at any one of the nine sampling stations established. The results of this study are in agreement with the 1978–1979 pilot survey of Young and Blevins (1981) conducted at the same sampling stations. It appears that, in this region of Tennessee, heavy metal contamination of fish tissues has neither improved nor deteriorated during the last 5 yr.

    Description: Recent developments in synthetic molecular motors and pumps have sprung from a remarkable confluence of experiment and theory. Synthetic accomplishments have facilitated the ability to design and create molecules, many of them featuring mechanically bonded components, to carry out specific functions in their environment—walking along a polymeric track, unidirectional circling of one ring about another, synthesizing stereoisomers according to an external protocol, or pumping rings onto a long rod-like molecule to form and maintain high-energy, complex, nonequilibrium structures from simpler antecedents. Progress in the theory of nanoscale stochastic thermodynamics, specifically the generalization and extension of the principle of microscopic reversibility to the single-molecule regime, has enhanced the understanding of the design requirements for achieving strong unidirectional motion and high efficiency of these synthetic molecular machines for harnessing energy from external fluctuations to carry out mechanical and/or chemical functions in their environment. A key insight is that the interaction between the fluctuations and the transition state energies plays a central role in determining the steady-state concentrations. Kinetic asymmetry, a requirement for stochastic adaptation, occurs when there is an imbalance in the effect of the fluctuations on the forward and reverse rate constants. Because of strong viscosity, the motions of the machine can be viewed as mechanical equilibrium processes where mechanical resonances are simply impossible but where the probability distributions for the state occupancies and trajectories are very different from those that would be expected at thermodynamic equilibrium.

    Description: Based on previous work, dome-shaped fishery selectivity patterns are expected in place of asymptotic patterns when one-way fish movements among areas are considered. It is less clear if this occurs when the "round-trip" seasonal movements are considered. A simulation of a long-distance migrating fish stock (Atlantic menhaden) was used to study the influence of life history and fishery processes on selectivity, under an "areas as fleet" stock assessment context. When age-constant two-way migration was assumed to occur at a low rate, a domed selectivity pattern in the area experiencing the highest fishing mortality was produced, consistent with previous work. However, as the two-way migration rate increased, the domed selectivity pattern diminished and eventually disappeared. When age-varying migration was introduced, with a higher movement probability for older fish, domed selectivity prevailed in the source (i.e. spawning) area. If movement away from the spawning area occurs at younger ages than are selected by the fishing gear, the extent of the dome in this area is reduced. When movement away from the spawning area occurs at ages that are already available to the fishing gear, the dome in the spawning area is exaggerated. The area in which domed selectivity occurred was primarily determined by whether the probability of movement increased or decreased with age. In contrast to previous work that considered one-way or diffusive movement, the temporal or spatial distribution of recruitment and overall fishing mortality did not have a significant influence on selectivity. Building simulations that reflect the life history of the stock can guide assessment efforts by placing priors and constraints on model fits to selectivity patterns and be used to explore trade-offs between model complexity and the ability to produce reasonable management advice. Their development is encouraged as a standard feature in the assessment of migratory fish stocks.

Dean & P. Kim Electrons incident from a normal metal onto a superconductor are reflected back as holes—a process called Andreev reflection. In a normal metal where the Fermi energy is much larger than a typical superconducting gap, the reflected hole retraces the path taken by the incident electron. In graphene with low disorder, however, the Fermi energy can be tuned to be smaller than the superconducting gap. In this unusual limit, the holes are expected to be reflected specularly at the superconductor–graphene interface owing to the onset of interband Andreev processes, where the effective mass of the reflected holes changes sign. Here we present measurements of gate-modulated Andreev reflections across the low-disorder van der Waals interface formed between graphene and the superconducting NbSe2. We find that the conductance across the graphene–superconductor interface exhibits a characteristic suppression when the Fermi energy is tuned to values smaller than the superconducting gap, a hallmark for the transition between intraband retro Andreev reflections and interband specular Andreev reflections.
