Notes: Abstract A well exposed succession of spinifex-textured komatiite flows is reported from the Archaean Nondweni greenstone belt located near the southern margin of the Kaapvaal Craton. The flows are relatively thin (1–5 m) compared to similar occurrences in other greenstone belts. They are characterised by well developed cone structures of highly elongate amphibole crystals (after augite) which fan downwards from the tops of the flows. Extreme development of coned spinifex has not been reported from other greenstone belts and points to specific thermal conditions prevailing in the Nondweni environment. The zones of bladed spinifex are contained between layers of random spinifex and overlie a lower cumulus layer originally of augite, orthopyroxene and minor olivine. The observed major and trace element distributions through a 1.7 m thick spinifex-textured flow are consistent with a model involving concentration of phenocryst phases resulting in significant fractionation upwards in the flow. Approximately 40% of the spinifex-textured phenocrysts grew in situ after the lithological units were established. Collapse and displacement of the coned crystal networks, originally attached to the top of the flow, are shown to have influenced the distribution of liquid within the flow and accentuated the fractionation. Associated with the spinifex-textured units are massive aphyric and brecciated flows which show distinct chemical cycles through the succession. The brecciated zones have compositions with 〈18% MgO and are characterised by ovoid bodies that are not pillows and may represent magmatic reworking and movement of a partly congealed flow. Post-solidus alteration is considered to have caused early hydration of the original mineralogy and also introduced SiO2 and Na2O into the upper part of the flow by way of microfractures. The observed alteration is different to that of Mid-Ocean Ridge basalts, and a subaerial/shallow water environment is suggested.

Notes: Abstract Spinellids showing unmixed intergrowths of chromite or chromian spinel (sensu stricto) and magnetite or chromian magnetite are not known in mafic or ultramafic igneous rocks. They do occur within metamorphosed rocks that attained temperatures sufficiently high (upper amphibolite facies) for the formation of homogeneous Al-Cr-Fe3+-Ti spinel phases with compositions not matched in slowly cooled igneous rocks. In the Tugela Rand intrusion complex intergrowths of chromian spinel, chromian magnetite, ulvöspinel, ilmenite and a transparent aluminous spinel are observed and interpreted in terms of the thermal history of the rocks. Compositional differences between the separate areas of chromian spinel and chromian magnetite in complex intergrowths exhibited by the metamorphosed Tugela Rand and Mambulu Complexes confirm the extension of the magnetite-hercynite solvus (Turnock and Eugster 1962) towards magnesium- and chromium-rich compositions. The Tugela Rand spinellids are compared with those from the Carr Boyd Complex (Purvis et al. 1972) and the ultramafic rocks of the Giant Nickel Mine (Muir and Naldrett 1973) and the Red Lodge district (Loferski and Lipin 1983). Significant differences between the spinels from the Red Lodge district compared to the other three occurrences may reflect the different metamorphic histories of these areas.

Notes: Abstract A linear elastic fracture mechanics approach has been used to characterize failure in glass-ionomer cements. The toughness, fracture toughness, flexural strength and inherent flaw size increase with the molecular weight of the poly(acrylic acid), whilst the Young's modulus remains approximately constant. The dependence of toughness on poly(acrylic acid) molecular weight is not as large as predicted by a reptation/chain pull out model for fracture and this is thought to be a result of the weak ionic crosslinks formed during the cement reaction.

Notes: Summary A quantitative ultrastructural study was made of the neuntes forming the deep muscular and circular muscle plexuses of the guinea-pig small intestine following microsurgical lesions designed to interrupt intrinsic and extrinsic nerve pathways within the intestinal wall. Removal of a collar of longitudinal muscle with attached myenteric plexus from the circumference of a segment of small intestine resulted in the subsequent disappearance of 99.3% of neurites in the underlying circular muscle. The few surviving neurites in the deep muscular plexus and circular muscle disappeared completely from lesioned segments that were, in addition, extrinsically denervated surgically. These results indicate that the majority of nerve fibres in the deep muscular and circular muscle plexuses of the guinea-pig small intestine is intrinsic to the intestine and originates from nerve cell bodies located in the overlying myenteric plexus. At the light-microscopic level, nerve bundles were traced from the myenteric plexus to the circular muscle.

Notes: Abstract The common nature of a range of ‘classical’ geographical problems is described. By adopting a particular system description and set of methods, it is shown that it is possible to develop an integrated framework within which the traditional models can be seen as special cases and whose assumptions can be relaxed. It is the ideas of dynamical systems theory, developed in a specific way for geographical systems, which enables such an integrated model system to be built. The framework is then extended by introducing and developing the concept of performance indicators which have roles both in model development and planning.

Notes: Abstract The object H0323+022 (Doxsey et al. 1983) has been shown to be a BL Lac object by virtue of a diversity of observational characteristics at radio, optical, and x-ray wavelengths, in agreement with the conclusion of Margon and Jacoby (1984). Multi-frequency coordinated observations of this highly variable object with EXOSAT in September 1984 found it to be in a faint quiescent state (∼1/3; μJy at ∼5 keV and V=16.55). Preliminary results from the latter observations are presented.

Notes: Abstract The paper describes a series of techniques for the analysis of long-term cardiorespiratory recordings from infants. The analysis performed is based on analysing the respiratory rate, respiratory-rate variability, heart rate and the heart-rate variability measured for nonoverlapping time epochs of approximately 100s duration throughout the recordings. Three descriptors of each of these four data series have been used. First, the mean value and standard deviation; secondly, the probability density function, which was then processed by a principal-components factor analysis to achieve data reduction and classification to make comparisons between different groups of infants; and finally, the power spectral density function. These techniques provide a comprehensive method for analysing long-term cardiorespiratory recordings which should greatly extend their value for both routine clinical use and for research purposes.
