    Notes: Abstract Competition for light, water and nitrogen between hazel trees and cocksfoot grown under the trees was studied in two hazel plantations managed in different ways. The first plantation with a light transmission of at least 70% at grass level was compared with two control hazel and cocksfoot monocrops. The soil was a calcareous heavy clay, 1.4 m deep. Water stress during summer was severe in the intercropped stand as well as the grass- only plots, while it was much less in the sole stand of trees (without grass). Hazel tree water potential in the intercropped stand improved in the fourth year as the trees extended their roots similarly to the grass-free ones, despite their much lower canopy growth rate. The fourth year, local N fertilisation began to be effective as evidenced by the N content per leaf area unit and growth of the intercropped trees: grass root competition was high and root barriers were needed to exclude it. The second plantation was managed on a deep soil with a water table at approximately 2.5 m depth. The trees did not suffer from the presence of grass, and allowed a 15 to 75% light transmission rate. A control monocropped grass plot was established for comparison. On the basis of the multiple limitation hypothesis, a grass dry matter production model was built which accounts for radiation transmitted to the understorey, water supply, temperature and air moisture deficit in interaction with the radiation transmission rate (r2 = 0.716; 590 observations). The limits of such models are discussed with regard to insufficient knowledge on root dynamics.

    Notes: Abstract The object H0323+022 (Doxsey et al. 1983) has been shown to be a BL Lac object by virtue of a diversity of observational characteristics at radio, optical, and x-ray wavelengths, in agreement with the conclusion of Margon and Jacoby (1984). Multi-frequency coordinated observations of this highly variable object with EXOSAT in September 1984 found it to be in a faint quiescent state (∼1/3; μJy at ∼5 keV and V=16.55). Preliminary results from the latter observations are presented.

    Notes: Abstract Field studies with three common local species of hermit crabs,Clibanarius vittatus, Pagurus longicarpus, andPagurus pollicaris, showed that these crabs responded behaviorally to chemicals originating from crushed conspecifics. Hermit crabs are attracted specifically and in a manner similar to previously reported crab responses to odors from dead gastropods. Responses byC. vittatus to both kinds of odor are of three types: (1) aggregation/shell investigation responses (previously reported for odors from dead gastropods), characterized by increased locomotor activity, investigation of shells in the vicinity, and switching into empty shells; (2) alarm responses, in which crabs flee the area; and (3) withdrawal responses, in which crabs pull into their shells and do not come out. Studies withC. vittatus showed that the stimulatory chemicals originate from hemolymph, are less than 500 D, adsorb to octadecyl silica, and are recovered by elution with 20% methanol. Responses ofC. vittatus are dependent upon crab size, type of shell occupied, and shell fit. Chemicals originating from dead conspecifics provide a forum for shell acquisition by crabs in relatively small shells and alarm by crabs in relatively large shells.

    Notes: The effect of compositional variables on the mechanical properties of a UV-cured coating was investigated. The coating contains two monomers, 2-ethoxyethoxyethylacrylate (EEEA) and N-vinyl-pyrrolidone (NVP), and a higher molecular weight resin (MW ∼1000) which is a commercial urethane diacrylate. In addition, a photoinitiator, 2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone, was present at a constant concentration. It was found that the mechanical properties of the cured films depend mainly on the concentration of 2-ethoxyethoxyethylacrylate (EEEA). Spectroscopic analysis. showed that EEEA undergoes both homopolymerization as well as an addition reaction with the photoinitiator and is thus not incorporated in the crosslinked matrix but rather acts similar to a compatible plasticizer. Kinetic analysis of the reactions of the single components and mixtures showed widely diverging reactivities of the components with homopolymerization of EEEA being a favored reaction path. A speculative conclusion is that, to avoid homopolymerization and monomeric reactions, optimized coating formulations (coatings with mechanical properties that are not affected by small compositional variations) should be based on monomers and oligomers with similar reactivities.

    Description: We prove a variety of results describing the diagonals of tuples of commuting hermitian operators in type II $_1$ factors. These results, motivated by work of Arveson and Kadison, are generalizations of the classical Schur–Horn theorem to the infinite-dimensional, multivariable setting. Our description of these possible diagonals uses a natural generalization of the classical notion of majorization. In the special case when both the given tuple and the desired diagonal have finite joint spectrum, our results are complete. When the tuples do not have finite joint spectrum, we are able to prove strong approximate results. Unlike the single variable case, the multivariable case presents several surprises and we point out obstructions to extending our complete description in the finite spectrum case to the general case. We also discuss the problem of characterizing diagonals of commuting tuples in ${\mathcal B}({\mathcal H})$ and give approximate characterizations in this case as well.

    Description: A precise description of the injective envelope of a spatial continuous trace C*-algebra A over a Stonean space is given. The description is based on the notion of a weakly continuous Hilbert bundle, which we show herein to be a Kaplansky–Hilbert module over the abelian AW*-algebra C (). We then use the description of the injective envelope of A to study the first- and second-order local multiplier algebras of A . In particular, we show that the second-order local multiplier algebra of A is precisely the injective envelope of A .

    Description: Thorne–Zytkow objects (TZOs) are a theoretical class of star in which a compact neutron star is surrounded by a large, diffuse envelope. Supergiant TZOs are predicted to be almost identical in appearance to red supergiants (RSGs). The best features that can be used at present to distinguish TZOs from the general RSG population are the unusually strong heavy-element and Li lines present in their spectra, products of the star's fully convective envelope linking the photosphere with the extraordinarily hot burning region in the vicinity of the neutron star core. Here, we present our discovery of a TZO candidate in the Small Magellanic Cloud. It is the first star to display the distinctive chemical profile of anomalous element enhancements thought to be unique to TZOs. The positive detection of a TZO will provide the first direct evidence for a completely new model of stellar interiors, a theoretically predicted fate for massive binary systems, and never-seen-before nucleosynthesis processes that would offer a new channel for Li and heavy-element production in our Universe.
