Description: The advanced molybdenum-based rare process experiment (AMoRE) aims to search for neutrinoless double beta decay ($$0 u eta eta $$0νββ) of $$^{100}$$100Mo with $$sim 100,hbox {kg}$$∼100kg of $$^{100}$$100Mo-enriched molybdenum embedded in cryogenic detectors with a dual heat and light readout. At the current, pilot stage of the AMoRE project we employ six calcium molybdate crystals with a total mass of 1.9 kg, produced from $$^{48}$$48Ca-depleted calcium and $$^{100}$$100Mo-enriched molybdenum ($$^{48{{ext {depl}}}}hbox {Ca}^{100}hbox {MoO}_{4}$$48deplCa100MoO4). The simultaneous detection of heat (phonon) and scintillation (photon) signals is realized with high resolution metallic magnetic calorimeter sensors that operate at milli-Kelvin temperatures. This stage of the project is carried out in the Yangyang underground laboratory at a depth of 700 m. We report first results from the AMoRE-Pilot $$0 u eta eta $$0νββ search with a 111 kg day live exposure of $$^{48{{ext {depl}}}}hbox {Ca}^{100}hbox {MoO}_{4}$$48deplCa100MoO4 crystals. No evidence for $$0 u eta eta $$0νββ decay of $$^{100}$$100Mo is found, and a upper limit is set for the half-life of $$0 u eta eta $$0νββ of $$^{100}$$100Mo of $$T^{0 u }_{1/2} 〉 9.5imes 10^{22}~hbox {years}$$T1/20ν〉9.5×1022years at 90% C.L. This limit corresponds to an effective Majorana neutrino mass limit in the range $$langle m_{ eta eta } angle le (1.2-2.1),hbox {eV}$$⟨mββ⟩≤(1.2-2.1)eV.

Notes: Summary The microbial ecology of pristine, slightly contaminated, and heavily contaminated subsurface materials, and four subsurface materials on the periphery of the plume at an abandoned creosote waste site was investigated. Except for the unsaturated zone of the heavily contaminated material, mineralization of glucose (13.5 ppb) indicated a metabolically active microflora in all subsurface materials. However, mineralization (〈40%) of naphthalene, phenanthrene, and 2-methylnaphthalene was observed in contaminated material and material from the periphery of the plume, but not in pristine material. Pentachlorophenol was mineralized in material from the periphery of the plume. Inorganic and organic nutrient amendments and changes in pH and temperature did not increase the extent of mineralization of the aromatic compounds. An array of organic compounds found in creosote were biotransformed in contaminated ground water; however some compounds were still detected after 7 months of incubation. The data suggest that the subsurface microflora in slightly and heavily contaminated subsurface materials and materials from the periphery of the plume has adapted to degrade many compounds found in creosote.

Notes: Summary Analysis of rhesus monkey alphoid DNA suggests that it arose by tandem duplication of an ancestral monomer unit followed by independent variation within two adjacent monomers (one becoming more divergent than the other) before their amplification as a dimer unit to produce tandem arrays. The rhesus monkey alphoid DNA is a tandemly repeated, 343-bp dimer; the consensus dimer is over 98% homologous to the alphoid dimers reported for baboon and bonnet monkey, 81% homologous to the African green monkey alpha monomer, and less than 70% homologous to the more divergent human alphoid DNAs. The consensus dimer consists of two wings (I and II, 172 and 171 bp, respectively) that are only 70% homologous to each other, but share seven regions of exact homology. These same regions are highly conserved among the consensus sequences of the other cercopithecid alphoid DNAs. The three alpha-protein binding sites reported for African green monkey alpha DNA by F. Strauss and A. Varshavsky (Cell 37: 889–901, 1984) occur in wings I and II, but with one site altered in wing I. Two cloned dimer segments are 98% homologous to the consensus, each containing 8 single-base-pair differences within the 343-bp segment. Surprisingly, 37% of these differences occur in regions that are evolutionarily conserved in the alphoid consensus sequences, including the alpha-protein binding sites. Sequence variation in this highly repetitive DNA family may produce unique nucleosomal architectures for different members of an alphoid array. These unique architectures may modulate the evolution of these repetitive DNAs and may produce unique centromeric characteristics in primate chromosomes.

Notes: Abstract The U.S. Geological Survey deep crustal studies reflection profile across the Gulf of Maine off southeastern New England was affected by three sources of noise: side-scattered noise, multiples, and 20-Hz whale sounds. The special processing most effective in minimizing this noise consisted of a combination of frequency-wavenumber (F-K) filtering, predictive deconvolution, and spectral whitening, each applied in the shot domain (prestack). Application of the F-K filter to remove side-scatter noise in the poststack domain resulted in a much poorer quality profile. The prestack noise suppression processing techniques resulted in a reflection profile with good signal-to-noise ratios and reliable strong reflections, especially at depths equivalent to the lower crust (24–34 km). Certain geologic features, such as a buried rift basin and a crustal fault are resolved much better within the upper crust after this processing. Finite difference migration of these data using realistic velocities produced excellent results. Migration was essential to distinguish between abundant dipping and subhorizontal reflections in the lower crust as well as to show an essentially transparent upper mantle.

Notes: Summary The binding of 22 fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) conjugated lectins to human proliferative phase and pregnant endometrium was studied histochemically. Only the lectin from Bauhinia purpurea (BPA) reacted exclusively with the epithelial cells. All the others reacted to a certain extent with glandular and/or stromal cells. Lectins from soybean (SBA), and Vicia villosa seeds (VVA) reacted with endometrial glands of pregnancy but not with the glands of the proliferative endometrium. In the proliferative endometrium SBA reacted only with cells of the surface endometrium. Lectin from peanuts (PNA) reacted only with some glands in the proliferative endometrium but was unreactive with others. In pregnant endometrium PNA reacted with all glands. Lectins from lentils (LCA) and red kidney beans (PHA-E and PHA-L) reacted with endometrial glands of the proliferative phase but not with the glands from pregnant endometrium. We thus show that FITC labeled lectins define specific carbohydrate moieties selectively expressed on either proliferative phase or pregnant endometrial glands.

Notes: Summary Lectin from Griffonia simplicifolia (GSA-I) and soybean (SBA) are reliable markers for human eosinophils. In this study we have shown that fluorochrome labeled GSA-I and SBA can be used for specific labeling of eosinophils in paraffin embedded tissue sections, in peripheral blood smears and in cell suspensions prepared for flow cytometry. These two lectins are useful diagnostic reagents which could be applied for further characterization of cytoplasmic components selectively found in human eosinophils.

Notes: Abstract We have characterized a novel mouse gene (D17Si11) on chromosome 17 that expresses a major transcript observed uniquely in the testes. TheD17Si11 locus has been mapped to the central region of chromosome 17 betweenH-2 andC3. Sequence analysis demonstrates several unusual features of this locus and its transcript: first is the presence of complementary sets of alternating purine and pyrmidine residues within the 3′ region of the transcript that could form double-stranded, hairpin-like secondary structures with properties similar to that of Z-DNA; second is the existence of a hypothetical, long open reading frame in the nucleotide strand that is complementary to the testes transcripts. This complementary strand open reading frame is three times the size of the longest potential open reading frame present in the transcript itself. Although a function forD17Si11 has yet to be determined, the gene is relatively non-polymorphic in mice and appears conserved in mammals.
