    Notizen: Abstract. Experiments were carried out on Pinus radiata (D. Don) trees grown as cuttings from clonal parent stock. Some of these trees were about 0.4 m high while others were about 5 m high; all were grown in containers. The stem diameters at the tops and at the bottoms of the large trees, rates of photosynthesis, and needle water potentials were measured both when the trees were well watered and as they dehydrated after water was withheld. The water potentials of well-watered plants was highest in the small trees and lowest at the top of the large trees. When water was withheld, photosynthesis was in most cases unaffected by a small reduction in water potential, but the rate of photosynthesis fell as water potentials declined further. The stems of the large trees expanded at a constant rate when the trees were well watered and for part of the dehydration period, while subsequent stem shrinkage and the fall in photosynthesis both occurred at approximately the same time.Water potentials increased little in the 24 h after rewatering, and significant rates of photosynthesis were not measured until 2 or 3 d later while renewed stem expansion was not measured until 2 d after rewatering.Water deficits reduced the lumen diameter of newly matured stem tracheids, but increased the thickness of their walls. After 1 month of water potentials of about −2.4 MPa, tracheid lumen diameter and wall thickness were both much reduced, and this reduction continued in tracheids maturing shortly after rewatering.

Stomatal conductance and needle water potential of P. radiata clones were measured after 2, 5 and 8 months on plants grown in controlled environment rooms with markedly different water vapour saturation deficits (D). Conductance was significantly lower at high D, but water potential differences between treatments were not significant. When trees were moved between treatments most of the changes in conductances occurred within 2 h, with residual changes after 24 h. Water potentials were not different 24 h after the trees were moved. The effects were completely reversible.Transpiration rates of individual trees were highest in the high D treatment and lowest in the low D treatment. They were not linearly related to D because of decreasing conductance with increasing D.Height growth, diameter growth and foliage areas were not significantly different between treatments. Tracheid lumen diameters tended to be larger in trees grown at higher D although treatment differences were not significant.There were significant clonal differences in shoot conductance and tracheid dimensions.

The amount of water available diurnally and annually from the storage tissues was measured in plots of Scots pine trees with four different population densities (608–3281 trees per ha) in a 40-year-old plantation in north eastern Scotland. The water storage capacity of stems, branches, and foliage was estimated from equations derived from harvested trees and measurements of relative water content. On average 64% of the water considered to be available for transpiration was in the stem sapwood and less than 5% in the phloem, cambium and foliage. Trees on the plot with the highest population density had a water storage capacity of 212 m3 ha−1 (21.2 mm), whereas those on the plot with the lowest population density had a water storage capacity of 124 m3 ha−1 (12.4 mm). The utilization of stored water in transpiration was estimated from seasonal and diurnal measurements of the relative water content of foliage and stem sapwood. The largest change in sapwood relative water content over a 2-week period was a reduction of 27% corresponding to extraction from the sapwood of 2.5 and 5.1 mm of water on the plots with the lowest and highest population densities, respectively. In rapidly changing weather conditions 1–1.5 mm day−1 could be removed from the stem sapwood alone. Since transpiration rarely exceeded 3 mm day−1, 30–50% of the transpired water was extracted from water stored in the stem sapwood over short periods. Trees on the plot with the lowest population density occasionally had slightly higher relative water contents and exhibited larger diurnal fluctuations than those on the plot with the highest population density, possibly because of differences in wood density. Sapwood water content was generally lower at times of high transpiration rate and in winter during freezing conditions. Resaturation took several months to complete during the winter.

Analysis of the food, faeces and hepatopancreas suggest that the sterol is derived from the diet. The probable function of ecdysterone in relation to calcification of the shell is discussed in this paper.

    Notizen: Abstract Ryegrass was grown, in pots under controlled-environment conditions, on soil mixed with each of ten slurries, eight from dairy farms and two from pig farms. In addition, ryegrass was grown under the same conditions but with the water-insoluble material separated from each slurry. Incorporation of the whole slurries increased the yield of herbage, the concentration of N in the herbage and N uptake, compared with plants grown on soil alone, the effects being greatest at the first of six successive harvests. In contrast, incorporation of the water-insoluble material of the cattle slurries decreased herbage yield and N uptake, particularly at the first harvest, but the water-insoluble material of the pig slurries produced some increase in herbage yield and N uptake. The results indicate that the water-insoluble material of the cattle slurries immobilized N that would otherwise have been available from the water-soluble fraction of the whole slurries and/or from the soil. The recovery by the ryegrass of the water-soluble N from the whole slurries was closely correlated with the concentration of N in the water-insoluble material (r=0.863***) and negatively correlated with the C∶N ratio (r=0.892***). Correlations between the recovery of the water-soluble N and the concentrations of N in five particle size fractions of the water-insoluble material indicated that the fraction of smallest particle size (〈0.2 mm) had the greatest effect.

    Notizen: Summary The absorption, distribution and concentration of Cu in white clover were examined in plants grown on 21 soils under controlled environment conditions, and the results compared with those from a previous study with perennial ryegrass. The clover absorbed more Cu and, in general, had higher concentrations in the shoots over six successive harvests than did the ryegrass. However, concentrations of Cu in the roots, and the proportion of the total plant Cu found in the roots were lower with the clover. The concentration of Cu in the shoots of the clover, and the total amount in shoots plus roots, respectively, were correlated with the concentration of Cu extracted from the soils by 0.05M EDTA (r=0.473 and 0.700), by 0.005M DTPA (r=0.610 and 0.638) and by 1.95 per cent HNO3 (r=0.627 and 0.699). Some of these correlations were improved slightly when the concentrations of extractable Cu were adjusted for soil pH. The exploration of the soils by root extension appeared to be less important in the acquisition of Cu by the clover than it was for the ryegrass.

    Notizen: Abstract Big Moose L. has become significantly more acidic since the 1950s, based on paleolimnological analyses of sediment cores. Reconstruction of past lakewater pH using diatom assemblage data indicates that from prior to 1800 to ca. 1950, lakewater pH was about 5.8. After the mid-1950s, the inferred pH decreased steadily and relatively quickly to about 4.6. Alkalinity reconstructions indicate a decrease of about 30 μeq · l-1 during the same period. There was a major shift in diatom assemblage composition, including a nearly total loss of euplanktonic taxa. Chrysophyte scale assemblages and chironomid (midge larvae remains also changed in a pattern indicating decreasing lakewater pH starting in the 1950s. Accumulation rates of total Ca, exchangeable and oxide Al, and other metals suggest recent lake-watershed acidification. Cores were dated using210Pb, pollen, and charcoal. Indicators of watershed change (deposition rates of Ti, Si, Al) do not suggest any major erosional events resulting from fires or logging. Accumulation rates of materials associated with combustion of fossil fuels (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, coal and oil soot particles, some trace metals, and sulfur) are low until the late 1800s-early 1900s and increase relatively rapidly until the 1920s–1930s. Peak rates occurred between the late 1940s and about 1970, when rates declined. The recent decrease in pH of Big Moose L. cannot be accounted for by natural acidification or processes associated with watershed disturbance. The magnitude, rate and timing of the recent pH and alkalinity decreases, and their relationship to indicators of coal and oil combustion, indicate that the most reasonable explanation for the recent acidification is increased atmospheric deposition of strong acids derived from combustion of fossil fuels.

    Notizen: Abstract Estimates of hourly transpiration from a 16–17 yr old Sitka spruce forest were calculated from the Penman-Monteith combination equation and compared with estimates from an eddy correlation/energy balance method. Canopy conductances were estimated from stomatal conductances measured using null balance diffusion porometers and took account of canopy variations of stomatal conductance and needle area index. Vertical heat fluxes were measured by the eddy correlation method; transpiration fluxes were then estimated from an energy balance of the forest. There was not a 1:1 relationship between the estimates of transpiration from the two methods. The major sources of error were concluded to be (i) difficulties of estimating the variation in stomatal conductance and leaf area through the canopy, (ii) errors in the value of total leaf area index, and (iii) errors in stomatal conductance measurements. The eddy correlation method was suggested as the more useful for future studies of the variation of forest transpiration in time or space, because the Penman-Monteith equation requires extensive biological measurements.

    Notizen: Summary White clover and perennial ryegrass were grown separately, in pots maintained under controlled environment conditions, for a period of 7 months on ten soils. The proportion of the total soil content of each element taken up by the ryegrass, including that in roots, ranged from 0.88 to 2.18% for Cu, from 0.82 to 2.80% for Zn and from 0.25 to 3.15% for Mn. Uptake by the clover was within these ranges for Cu and Zn, but ranged from 0.10 to 1.71% for Mn. After adjustment for the effects of soil contamination, the ratio of root concentration: shoot concentration was always greater than 1 for both Cu and Zn, and for Cu, though not for Zn, it was considerably greater with ryegrass than with clover. For Mn, the ratio of root:shoot concentration was often greater than 1, and differences between clover and grass were not consistent. Concentrations of Cu and Zn in the shoots were always greater in the clover than in the grass, but concentrations of Mn were generally greater in the grass than the clover.

    Notizen: Summary The absorption and transport of Cu were studied in perennial ryegrass grwon on 21 soils under controlled environment conditions. Neither the concentration, nor the total amount, of Cu in the shoots was related to available Cu in the soils as assessed by extraction with 0.05M EDTA, 0.005M DTPA, or 1.95 per cent HNO3. The concentration in the roots and, more especially, absorption per unit weight of root (i.e. μg Cu g dry wt−1) were, however, highly correlated with available soil Cu. This suggests that, unless the extent of exploitation of the soil by roots is taken into account, measurements of available Cu will not be effective in predicting uptake by plants. On average, 63 per cent of the Cu absorbed by the roots was retained in the roots, and variation in the proportion retained was related to the transport of nitrogen from roots to shoots. On some soils the concentrations of N and Cu in the shoots were significantly correlated, and variation in N concentration accounted for a considerable proportion of the variance in the Cu concentration at later harvests. The relative importance of the measured soil (pH, organic matter) and plant (dry weight, N content) factors changed markedly over 6 successive harvests.
