Notes: Abstract: Among Metazoa, sponges (phylum Porifera) are the richest source for different bioactive compounds. The availability of the raw material is, however, restricted. To obtain enough of the bioactive compounds for application in human therapy, sponges have to be cultured in in vitro systems. One technique for the establishment of a long-term cell culture from sponges has recently been elaborated. Here, we present a procedure to cultivate tissue samples from sponges in an open system. The species Geodia cydonium, which produces bioactive compounds, has been selected. Tissue samples of approximately 10 g were attached to the bottoms of cultivation trays. After 2 to 3 days, the tissue samples formed a robust contact with the metal support. Subsequently, sets of trays, called tray batteries, either remained in huge aquaria at the Center for Marine Research or were transferred to the vicinity of a fish and mussel farm. The growth rates of the samples remained unchanged within the first month; however, after 3 and 6 months, they increased to 147% and 189%, respectively. In parallel, extracts were prepared from the tissue samples and tested for cytotoxicity in a mouse lymphoma cell assay system. Extracts from cultured tissue initially had a low inhibitory potency; however, after cultivation for 3 or 6 months, values comparable to those of extracts from sponges taken from the biotope were found. In addition, a molecular marker was applied to document the response (health state) of the tissue and the identity of the material in culture. The CD63 molecule was chosen because the expression of this molecule in mammalian systems changes with the age of the animals. The corresponding complementary DNA was isolated from Geodia cydonium. With this probe, the level of expression in cultured tissue samples decreased immediately after starting cultivation; after a cultivation period of 6 months, however, values were similar to those found in controls. These data show that sponge species that produce bioactive compounds can be cultivated in open systems, in which they retain their potency to produce bioactive compounds as well as their health state.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we present a combinatorial technique which allows the derivation of the transition functions of general birth-death processes. This method provides a flexible tool for the transient analysis of Markovian queueing systems with state dependent transition rates, like M/M/c models or systems with balking and reneging.

Notes: Abstract The behaviour of regular packings constructed from corrugated metal sheets was investigated since they constitute an attractive packing material for the electrochemical absorption of gases. Mass transfer coefficients for the regular packing contained in a circular electrolytical cell were determined by the electrochemical method with simulation of the absorption process by bubbling nitrogen through the column. Correlations for the mass transfer rate as a function of fluid dynamic parameters and fluid properties are presented.

Notes: Abstract The12C(e, e'p)11B g.s reaction has been measured in parallel and anti-parallel kinematics over ap m range of −120〈p m〈120 MeV/c at a centralT p of 90 MeV. In contrast to previous measurements at NIKHEF, both kinematics can be described without enhancement of the transverse form factor of the bound proton (η=0.98(5)). The spectroscopic factor for this transition as determined with the new Mainz data (S α =1.54(5)) is 22% smaller than the NIKHEF value.

Notes: Abstract. The polarization transfer from longitudinally polarized electrons to protons in the elastic scattering p( e, e' p) has been measured around Q2 = 0.4 (GeV/c)2 with the three-spectrometer facility at the Mainz microtron MAMI. From this polarization transfer the ratio G Ep/(G Mp/μp) has been determined. The ratio is found to be slightly less than unity in agreement with recent results from other laboratories and from the Rosenbluth separation of cross-sections measured with unpolarized electrons.

Notes: Abstract: The reaction 12C(e,e'Δ0)11C →12C(e,e'pπ−)11C was investigated at the Mainz Microtron MAMI in a triple coincidence measurement using the three spectrometer setup of the A1 Collaboration. The good missing mass resolution of σm= 0.27 MeV/c2 allowed to select the events belonging to the ground state of 11C. Cutting on these events the excitation energy spectra of 12CΔ0 show evidence for two peaks of about 4 MeV width (FWHM) at 282 MeV and 296 MeV with a significance of about 4.5 standard deviations. The peaks are interpreted in a simple weak coupling model as bound Δ0 states in 12CΔ0.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary . Complex information processing systems are usually modelled by dividing them into independent units which then communicate through their interfaces. They are usually described using 2D-graphic tools. In this paper, we identify problems which emerge when communicating sequential processes (CSP) are used as the model system. CSP and its derivatives GRAPES and Occam are the starting point for this problem analysis. To resolve these problems we suggest a new 2D-graphic process language. We also describe the tool GRADE-3D, which presents the process language diagrams spatially; and processes functionality for interaction, for analysis and display of communication structure, as well as for model editing. Additionally, solutions for typical problems of 3D-tools are presented. Finally, 3D-tools are assessed from the perspectives of text vs. 2D vs. 3D and of GRAPES modellers.
Notes: Zusammenfassung.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract. In company-wide computer environments different types of network-oriented applications are employed. This article describes different requirement-profiles of classes of applications regarding their multimedia and online components. These systems are classified regarding their online-requirements, time-specific behaviour, and their tolerance regarding interuption of the communication. Three applications with basically different requirements that have been developed at ZGDV are described in depth to clarify and explain the used classification scheme. These applications use different types of networks, operate on different communication layers and have substantially different time-related requirements. Finally the online requirements of the applications described are set in context with a middlleware-layermodel also outlined in this article.
Notes: Zusammenfassung.
