Notes: Abstract Patterns of Hoechst 33258 fluorescence have been studied in grasshopper chromosomes. At metaphase of mitotic as well as meiotic divisions — when chromosomes were maximally compact — all the chromosomes fluoresced brightly but no differentially fluorescing regions were detected. However, when all the chromosomes, except the X, were highly extended at pachytene and diplotene stages a distinct differential fluorescence was observed: only the centromeres of the autosomal bivalents fluoresced brightly whereas the entire X univalent showed bright fluorescence. Restriction of differentially bright fluorescence to the more condensed regions of chromosomes suggests a modulatory role for chromosome condensation in the production of Hoechst fluorescence. This suggestion was further strengthened by the substantial quenching of fluorescence caused by removal of chromosomal proteins following treatment with H2SO4. Similarly, post-C-band-treatment staining with Hoechst also led to quenching, though now the centromeres of the chromosomes, including the X, retained their differential fluorescence. It is proposed, therefore, that in grasshopper chromosomes, H-fluorescence is modulated by chromosome condensation brought about by differential ratios of DNA/protein at different chromosome regions and at different division stages.

Notes: Summary An analytical model for the circulation in the upper extremities of man is studied under the condition that the hand is immersed in water at different temperatures. The arterial and venous system is represented by one artery and two veins. One of the veins lies close to the deep lying artery; the other one is a cutaneous vein. The model permits a qualitative description of the dependence on temperature of the rate of heat loss of the hand as a function of the rate of blood flow and the water temperature, by means of parameters which determine the behaviour of the considered system. One parameter accounts for the relative amount of the rate of blood flow along deep and cutaneous veins. Comparison with experiment leeds to the following results. At water temperaturesΘw higher than 25°C about 10% of the blood is returning through the deep vein; for water temperatures lower than 13° C this percentage becomes about 80%. In between the circulation pattern changes gradually. The influence of the counter-current effect, between the artery and the deep vein, on the heat loss of the hand is studied. The arterial blood temperature at the entrance in the hand is compared with the available experimental results.

Notes: Abstract The room temperature tensile properites of a Zr-1.9 wt % Cr alloy have been examined in the beta quenched as well as in tempered conditions and the results have been rationalized in terms of possible hardening mechanisms. The appearance of the fracture surfaces has been correlated to the microstructures developed in the alloy after various heat-treatments.

Notes: Abstract Highly purified poly(A)-containing free and polysomal mRNP particles have been isolated by chromatography of subcellular fractions of chick embryonic muscles on oligo-dT-cellulose and elution with low salt buffer at 45°. The free and polysomal mRNP represent two distinct classes of macromolecules, the free particles having a more complex nucleoprotein organization than the polysomal particles. Comparison of the protein moieties of three classes of poly(A)-containing cytoplasmic mRNP — those released from nuclei afterin vitro transcription and processing (transported mRNP), the free, and polysomal mRNP — strongly suggests that the majority of the mRNA-associated proteins are exchanged in the cytoplasm during the various functional states of mRNA. A model of translational control involving the participation of mRNA-associated proteins in chick embryonic muscles and by analogy in other differentiated eukaryotic cells is proposed.

Notes: Summary A non-linear diffraction theory of periodic gravity waves due to their interaction with a circular cylinder which extends from the ocean bottom through the free surface is presented. In order to obtain the solution, the velocity potential, the free surface elevation and the frequency parameter are expanded as series in powers of a parameter which is the ratio of the amplitude to wave length. Knowing the velocity potential of the incident wave, the velocity potential of the scattered wave for the corresponding order is obtained satisfying the proper boundary conditions and the radiation condition. The total potential governing the motion is thus obtained as a sum of incident and scattered potential for computing the pressures and forces on the cylinder.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Zustandsraum-Technik wird auf zweidimensionale elastodynamische Probleme ausgedehnt.
Notes: Summary The state space approach is extended to the two dimensional elastodynamic problems. The formulation is in a form particularly amenable to consistent reduction to obtain approximate theories of any desired order. Free vibration of rectangular beams of arbitrary depth is investigated using this approach. The method does not involve the concept of the shear coefficientk. It takes into account the vertical normal stress and the transverse shear stress. The frequency values are calculated using the Timoshenko beam theory and the present analysis for different values of Poisson's ratio and they are in good agreement. Four cases of beams with different end conditions are considered.

Notes: Summary Whether the individual ribosomal proteins undergo exchange between robosomes in vivo during cell growth was examined using heavy isotope transfer methodology. E. coli was grown first in a heavy isotope medium in the presence of [3H] leucine and then transferred to normal medium and allowed to grow for one generation in the presence of [14C] leucine. The “heavy” and “light” ribosomes that were present in such cells were separated by sedimentation and the ribosomal proteins resolved by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. The individual proteins were burnt in O2 and their contents of [3H] and [14C] labels determined. From the analysis of the data we find that the great majoritiy of the ribosomal proteins of E. coli does not undergo exchange during cell growth. Proteins which were found to exchange to varying levels in different transfer experiments were S1, S2, L7/L12, L9, L10 and L33. All of them except L9 exchanged to the same levels in control experments in wich separately grown heavy and light cells were mixed and processed. These proteins therefore undergo exchange during cell breakage and ribosome isolation. Protein L9 consistently showed appreciably greater exchange in transfer experiments as compared to the controls suggesting that it may exchange in vivo.
