Beschreibung: Measurements of redshifts and velocity dispersions are presented for Abell clusters A539, A1185, and A1228, and the southern clusters S1840-623, S1904-618, S1908-566, and S2000-561. All these clusters have reported X-ray luminosities or upper limits. Finding charts for the clusters are presented, and the measured heliocentric redshifts are given along with redshifts obtained by other investigators. Comments are made about each cluster. The technique used to derive the redshifts is summarized.

Beschreibung: X-ray, UV and optical data are presented of the longest period AM Her object, E2003+225, from October 12, 1983, together with a new linear polarization ephemeris. The optical and X-ray data were obtained simultaneously and the UV observations were carried out on the same day. A 6-hr observation with the Exosat 500 line/mm objective grating restricts soft X-ray blackbody temperatures to the range 18-29 eV. The blackbody luminosity exceeds the hard X-ray luminosity by at least a factor of 4.5, but is of the same order as the optical/UV component. Soft (0.1-0.25 keV) and hard X-ray (1-6 keV) light curves covering almost two orbital periods are presented and discussed.

Beschreibung: Narrow-band images of an unusual swirl structure located near the center of the Puppis A supernova remnant are presented which reveal three overlapping filamentary systems of highly diverse composition. One is dominated by emission lines of nitrogen, one by oxygen, and one by sulfur. Spectra indicate that these small rings have high velocities and a corresponding kinematic age of less than 800 yr. Heavy-element abundances are extremely high and different in each system, some reminiscent of knots in Cas A, and others of circumstellar matter observed surrounding supernova 1987A. The youth and unusual chemistry lead to the suggestion that a second supernova has exploded within the shell of Puppis A, giving rise to the swirl structure.

Beschreibung: WHT spectroscopy and photometry are used to investigate the structure of the cataclysmic vaiable V101, in the globular cluster M5. An encouraging consistency is found between the properties derived from the color, magnitude, radial-velocity variations and outburst light curve. All these indicate that V101's orbital period lies above the period gap, is at the distance of M5, and is probably a dwarf nova.

Beschreibung: The 1-0 O(7) and 0-0 S(13) lines of H2, at 3.807 and 3.846 microns, have been mapped over the region of the Orion molecular outflow. The intensity ratio of these lines is found to be independent of position in the outflow. From this it is inferred that the structure of the shocks and their cooling flows in Orion may be more akin to hydrodynamic shocks than the low-temperature C-shocks that are currently favored.

Beschreibung: Spectra of the SNR 0540-69.3 in the LMC are presented that cover the wavelength interval 3500-9800 A. An optical continuum is observed over this entire wavelength range from synchrotron emission near the 50 ms pulsar inside the remnant. The spectrum contains emission lines shifted by + 370 km/s from the local LMC rest velocity. The line widths average 2735 + or - 200 km/s, indicating an expansion age of 762 + or - 50 yr. Lines of forbidden O I, forbidden O II, forbidden O III, forbidden S II, forbidden S III, forbidden Ar III, forbidden Ni II, forbidden Fe II, forbidden Fe III, and H-alpha are detected, and forbidden Fe V and forbidden Fe VII may be detected. It is very likely that the object is the young SNR following core collapse of a massive star akin to the progenitor of SN 1987A.

Beschreibung: Solar wind heating by ionization and assimilation of the interstellar neutral wind is investigated using a numerical model of the interaction. The model is a time-dependent, one-dimensional, spherically symmetric, one-fluid code which includes mass, momentum, and energy sources due to the efficient incorporation of ionized interstellar hydrogen. Solar wind data at 1 AU from October 12, 1978 to February 25, 1980 were input to the inner boundary of the model and propagated out to 10 AU. Then, 52-day averages of proton temperature as functions of radius were produced for three values of the interstellar hydrogen density: 0.0, 0.03, and 0.1 per cu cm. It is concluded that, within the context of the model, the observations of solar wind proton temperatures at Voyager 1 and Pioneer 11 are consistent with heating of the solar wind by an interaction with inflowing interstellar neutral hydrogen. The density of this inflowing gas is near 0.03/cu cm.

Beschreibung: The UV extinction and element depletions in the circumstellar envelope Alpha Sco are investigated using IUE, Copernicus, and AS data of Alpha Sco B which can be seen in absorption through the cool-star envelope. The circumstellar reddening, depletions, and spectral extinction toward Alpha Sco B are estimated. Evidence is presented which suggests that the circumstellar grains are large and siliceous.

Beschreibung: The behavior of the reverse flow ceiling jet against the ventilation flow from 0.58 to 0.87 m/s was investigated in a 1/3 scale model of a wide body aircraft interior. For all tests, strong reverse-flow ceiling jets of hot gases were detected well upstream of the fire. Both thicknesses of the reverse-flow ceiling jet and the smoke layer increased with the fire-crossflow parameter. The thickness of the smoke layer where the smoke flows along the main flow below the reverse-flow ceiling jet was almost twice that of the reverse-flow ceiling jet. Detailed spatial and time-varying temperatures of the gas in the test section were measured, and velocity profiles were also measured using a temperature compensated hot film.

Beschreibung: Doppler and ranging measurements using the radio signal of the Giotto spacecraft were taken before, during, and after the encounter with Comet Halley on Mar. 13, 14, 1986. The spacecraft velocity was found to decrease by a total of 23.3 cm/s due to impacting gas and (primarily) dust in the cometary atmosphere. A preliminary dust production rate of 1000 kg/s is found to be consistent with this deceleration. Power spectra of the carrier phase fluctuations reveal an increase in level and a flattening of the spectrum just prior to encounter, presumably associated with the enhanced dust impact rate. Finally, simulated Doppler time profiles are computed using the radial dependence of plasma density observed by the Giotto in situ investigations. It is shown that the cometary electron content profile would have been clearly seen if a dual-frequency downlink radio configuration had been available at encounter.
