    Notes: The optical constants ε(E)[=ε1(E)+iε2(E)] of two epitaxial layers of GaInAsSb/GaSb have been measured at 300 K using spectral ellipsometry in the range of 0.35–5.3 eV. The ε(E) spectra displayed distinct structures associated with critical points (CPs) at E0 (direct gap), spin-orbit split E0+Δ0 component, spin-orbit split (E1,E1+Δ1) and (E0′,E0′+Δ0′) doublets, as well as E2. The experimental data over the entire measured spectral range (after oxide removal) has been fit using the Holden model dielectric function [Holden et al., Phys. Rev. B 56, 4037 (1997)] based on the electronic energy-band structure near these CPs plus excitonic and band-to-band Coulomb-enhancement effects at E0, E0+Δ0, and the E1, E1+Δ1 doublet. In addition to evaluating the energies of these various band-to-band CPs, information about the binding energy (R1) of the two-dimensional exciton related to the E1, E1+Δ1 CPs was obtained. The value of R1 was in good agreement with effective mass/k⋅p theory. The ability to evaluate R1 has important ramifications for recent first-principles band-structure calculations which include exciton effects at E0, E1, and E2 [M. Rohlfing and S. G. Louie, Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 2312 (1998); S. Albrecht et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 4510 (1998)]. The experimental absorption coefficients in the region of E0 were in good agreement with values obtained from a linear interpolation of the end-point materials. Our experimental results were compared to a recent evaluation and fitting (Holden model) of the optical constants of GaSb. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We present measurements of ballistic magnetoresistance in nanocontacts grown by electrodeposition of Ni microclusters on magnetic thin films covered by aluminum oxide layers, using a technique proposed by Schad et al. [D. Allen, R. Schad, G. Zangari, I. Zana, D. Yang, M. C. Tondra, and D. Wang, J. Vac. Sci. Technol. A. 18, 1830 (2000); Appl. Phys. Lett. 76, 407 (2000); D. Allen, R. Schad, G. Zangari, I. Zana, D. Yang, M. C. Tondra, D. Wang, and D. Reed, J. Appl. Phys. 89, 6662 (2001)]. The measurements are made on single Ni clusters in contact with a Ni and Co thin film. We measure the magnetoresistance and observe the relaxation of the magnetization and electrical resistance as a function of time. The clusters are electrodeposited under several different experimental conditions. Some are deposited randomly on an unpatterned film and some through various patterned photoresists that control the location at which the cluster is grown. The typical contact size is estimated from the electrical resistance to be 10–30 nm. Ballistic magnetoresistance values up to 14% are obtained in these first experiments. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This letter shows that the ballistic magnetoresistance of Fe at room temperature and low magnetic fields is ten times smaller than for Ni and Co. The results are well explained by theory that provides a global understanding for 3d transition metals because, for Fe, the ratio of majority to minority spins at Fermi level is much smaller than for Ni and Co. The data indicate that conduction is carried out by majority d electrons in the case of Fe, in contrast to what happens for Ni and Co. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We present experimental results of unprecedented large magnetoresistance obtained in stable electrodeposited Ni–Ni nanocontacts 10–30 nm in diameter. The contacts exhibit magnetoresistance of up to 700% at room temperature and low applied fields and, therefore, act as very effective spin filters. These large values of the magnetoresistance are attributed to spin ballistic transport through a magnetic "dead layer" at the contact of width of about 1 nm or smaller. Nanometer sized, high sensitive magnetoresistive sensors could become key elements for magnetic storage in the terabit/in.2 range and in high density magnetic random access memories. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Scorpaena notata is an oviparous species with external fertilization that deposits its eggs in a gelatinous matrix. The internal epithelium of the ovarian wall is chiefly responsible for the production of this matrix, which is particularly abundant and viscous during the spawning period. The oocytes lack lipid droplets, so flotation and transport of the eggs is probably accomplished by means of the matrix that surrounds them. The ovarian stroma is situated along the centre of the gonad and the developing oocytes are connected to it by peduncles. The paucity and small size of the cortical alveoli of the oocytes are notable, as is the thinness of the zona radiata. These are characteristics that would be typical of viviparous species. The histological and ultrastructural observations lead to the conclusion that this species presents a type of oviparity more highly specialized than that of the majority of teleosts.

    Notes: Abstract. A two-offspring branching annihilating random walk model, with finite reaction rates, is studied in one-dimension. The model exhibits a transition from an active to an absorbing phase, expected to belong to the DP2 universality class embracing systems that possess two symmetric absorbing states, which in one-dimensional systems, is in many cases equivalent to parity conservation. The phase transition is studied analytically through a mean-field like modification of the so-called parity interval method. The original method of parity intervals allows for an exact analysis of the diffusion-controlled limit of infinite reaction rate, where there is no active phase and hence no phase transition. For finite rates, we obtain a surprisingly good description of the transition which compares favorably with the outcome of Monte Carlo simulations. This provides one of the first analytical attempts to deal with the broadly studied DP2 universality class.

    Notes: Abstract. A laser desorption (LD) coupled with resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionisation (REMPI) and time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS) technique for non-volatile trace analysis compounds is presented. Essential features are: (a) an enhanced desorption yield due to the mixing of metal powder with the analyte in the sample preparation, (b) a high resolution, great sensitivity and low detection limit due to laser resonant ionisation and mass spectrometry detection. Application to resveratrol content in grapes demonstrated the capability of the analytical method with a sensitivity of 0.2 pg per single laser shot and a detection limit of 5 ppb.

    Notes: Abstract. The production of antimicrobial peptides represents a first-line host defense mechanism of innate immunity that is widespread in nature. Only recently such effectors were isolated in crustacean species, whereas numerous antimicrobial peptides have been characterized from other arthropods, both insects and chelicerates. This review presents findings on a family of antimicrobial peptides, named penaeidins, isolated from the shrimp Penaeus vannamei. Their structure and antimicrobial properties as well as their immune function will be discussed through analyses of penaeidin gene expression and peptide distribution upon microbial challenge.
