Beschreibung: Manganese crust samples were dredged from the Line Islands Ridge and the MidPacific Mountains that were recently taken during the R/V Sonne SO18 (Midpac 81) cruise. The metal composition of the outermost millimetre of the crusts where growth rates were determined is given in Table 1. The concentrations were measured on dried substance. Mn, Fe were determined by potentiometric and complexometric titration methods; Ni, Cu, Co were analysed using differential pulse polarography. All analytical data are results of repeated determinations having 〈1% of relative error for main constituents (Mn, Fe), and 〈5% of relative error for minor constituents (Ni, Co, Cu).

Beschreibung: During the campaign SO23/2 (R/V Sonne) in the South China sea various manganese deposits were retrieved by dredging. Two representative samples were selected for chemical analysis: one Mn crust (0.4 cm thick) attached to a vesicular olivine basalt fragment for station 40KD and one irregular spheroidal shaped Mn nodule with rough surface and a Miocene chalk core for station 44KD. Their chemical composition was determined by X-ray fluorescence analysis on the grounded bulk sample.

In order to study the distribution of Th and U with distance, samples were drilled and the result was divided in equal parts. Liquid chromatography was used to separate and purify the Th isotopes. U and Th concentrations were determined using alpha spectrometry and 232Th isotope using atomic absorption spectroscopy.

In:  Supplement to: Mangini, Augusto; Dominik, Janusz (1978): Th230-excess EDTA extraction: A modification of the ionium method for high accumulation rate determinations. Meteor Forschungsergebnisse, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Reihe C Geologie und Geophysik, Gebrüder Bornträger, Berlin, Stuttgart, C29, 6-13
    Publikationsdatum: 2024-01-19
Beschreibung: A rapid procedure for Io (Th230) dating of sediments with accumulation rates in the range of several cm/1000 years is described. Studying of large sample populations with very small Io-excess activity is possible as the counting time (around 1500 min/sample) are 2 to 5 times shorter than with the standard Io-excess method. Improved sensitivity of the Io-excess measurement is achieved by: 1) extraction ( ~90 %) of the authigenic Io-excess with EDTA, with minor leaching ( ~30 %) of the allogenic Th232 and Io-supported, 2) processing samples as large as 10 g or more. The procedure was applied to sediments from the Caribbean (V 12-122) and from the Ionian Sea (M22_48 and M17_17). In the case of the standard core V 12-122 our results are in good agreement with previous time-consuming Io determinations. The resulting average accumulation rates of 2.0 ± 0.3 cm/1000 years for the Ionian Sea cores are close to the average derived from magnetic reversal studies of a nearby core.

In:  Supplement to: Fensterer, Claudia; Scholz, Denis; Hoffmann, Dirk L; Mangini, Augusto; Pajon, Jesus M (2010): 230Th/U-dating of a late Holocene low uranium speleothem from Cuba. IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science, 9(1), 012015, https://doi.org/10.1088/1755-1315/9/1/012015

Beschreibung: We present 22 U-series ages for a stalagmite from north-western Cuba based on multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICPMS) and thermal ionisation mass spectrometry (TIMS). Our results reveal that the stalagmite continuously grew within the last ~1400a. Low uranium content of the sample and thus, extremely low 230Th concentrations limit the precision and accuracy of 230Th/U-dating by TIMS. Samples measured by MC-ICPMS show a high variability of 232Th content along the growth axis with some sections significantly affected by initial 230Th from a detrital phase. An a-priori bulk earth ratio for (238U/232Th) cannot be used to accurately account for this initial 230Th. Using an age model based on the 230Th/U ages determined on samples with low or negligible 232Th concentration, we find that the (238U/232Th) activity ratio of the detrital phase is an order of magnitude larger than the bulk earth value, indicating the importance of an accurately determined correction factor.

Beschreibung: Using a new global compilation of deep-sea 14C/C, we estimated (in Rafter et al. 2022) the average D14C (units of per mil) and 14C ventilation age (units of years) over the last 25,000 years for the deep Pacific, Atlantic, and Southern Oceans. Particularly, we estimated these basin averages for mid-depth waters (between the 27.5 to 28.0 neutral density surfaces) and bottom waters (having a neutral density 〉28.0). These basin averages are calculated using LOESS smoothing, but see the original text for more details. Our reasons for uploading this new data are: (1) An earlier dataset here contained an error for the mid-depth Atlantic; (2) Earlier datasets did not include the trends as D14C values; and (3) Earlier datasets did not include the Raw data (the data before normalization). We have corrected this with the new submission. Please cite the Rafter et al. 2022 when using this dataset.
