Notes: Abstract A positive or negative hybrid effect in hybrid composites is defined as a positive or negative deviation of a certain mechanical property from the rule-of-mixtures behaviour. The question of hybrid effects is first examined with special hybrids which have been chosen so that the effect of the fibre-matrix interface is minimized. The hybrids examined consisted of two types of carbon fibres with different mechanical properties but similar surface treatments. The results of all the mechanical properties examined (modulus, strength, stress intensity factor, fracture energies) under quasi-static and fast testing conditions do not show any synergism. In view of these results a second hybrid system of E-glass fibre/AS carbon fibre-reinforced epoxy has been chosen. In this system both the mechanical properties of the fibres and the interface which they form with the resin are entirely different. None of the mechanical properties, excluding the fracture energies, show any signs of a hybrid effect. The fracture energy results, however, show the existence of a negative hybrid effect. A theory which sets upper and lower bounds for the hybrid effect is proposed, and the conditions for the occurrence of either a positive or a negative effect are discussed.

Notes: Summary The ELF-VLF experiment onboard the Interkosmos 10 satellite consisted mainly of a broadband receiver covering the frequency range from 20 Hz to 22 kHz. The signal level in this broad band has also been measured, as well as the level in two narrow bands with centre frequencies of 720 Hz and 4 kHz. The electric component of the ELF-VLF fields has been measured by using an electric dipole antenna, 2.35 m in length. The purpose of this paper is to characterise the data obtained by the broadband RTT transmissions at the Panská Ves station during the seven-months active period of the satellite. The spectral analysis of all broad-band ELF-VLF recordings has been used. Examples of some typical phenomena, most frequently observed at different invariant latitudes are given.

Notes: Abstract The Hamiltonian for the dynamics of a structural defect in a linear hydrogen bonded system (e.g., one analogous to an excess proton in ice) is developed, including explicit expressions for the coupling between the defect and phonons. The nature of these couplings are discussed and the results of a minimal basis set SCF calculation on a model system presented. The coupling to the longitudinal phonons is found to be very strong.

Notes: Abstract In a recent study the prerequisites for a hybrid effect and the factors which determine the occurrence of a positive or negative effect were examined and specified [2]. In this study, the influence of loading configuration on the hybrid effect is examined by comparing results from interlaminar and translaminar loadings. It is shown that the hybrid effect depends on the loading configuration through its dependence on the mode of failure. A positive hybrid effect under interlaminar loading is more likely to occur when the two types of fibres form an intimate mixture, whereby higher stress and greater energy are required to initiate delamination failure.

Notes: H3-Uridine microinjected in the giant axons of the squid is incorporated in a TCA insoluble material. There is no difference between stimulated and resting axons as to the amount incorporated. The amount incorporated is increased if the stimulation precedes the microinjection of the tracer.RNA was purified and characterized from the axoplasm, axon sheaths and from a purified membrane preparation obtained from squid retinal nerve.

Notes: Giant squid axons were microinjected with serine, valine and leucine-C14 under controlled electrophysiological conditions. These amino acids are incorporated into TCA insoluble fraction in the isolated axon. This incorporation is higher in the stimulated axons as compared to non-stimulated ones. By processing separately the axoplasm and axon sheath, it was found that the last one is responsible almost entirely for the observed incorporation.Through differential centrifugation of homogenates of microinjected axons was shown that the highest incorporation occurred in the 1500 × g sediment, which probably corresponds to membranes. The incorporation of amino acids in stimulated axons, is strongly inhibited by chloramphenicol and actinomycin D.
