Notes: Abstract Repetition of the work ofSugino andTamaka 1 showed that acrylonitrile and guanidine react inDMF to yield not only 3,4,6,7-tetrahydro-2H-pyrimido[1,2—a]pyrimidine-2,8(1H)-diimine (1), but a mixture (F) of1 (as a main product) and 2-amino-4-imino-1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidine-1-propionitrile (7) besides one or two bases not identified so far.1 and7 were isolated as picrates. For the prove of their structures,1- and7-picrate were also prepared by an unequivocal synthesis starting from iminodipropionitrile hydrochloride8 · HCl: The latter on reaction with cyanamide gave9 which cyclized to afford a mixture of1,7 and 2-amino-4-oxo-1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidine-1-propionitrile (10). The picrates of1 and7 were identical with those prepared from the acrylonitrileguanidine-condensateF. This result supports the prior proposed1 structures of pyrimidopyrimidine1 and of4,5 and6, obtained by hydrolysis of1. Nmr-, ir-and some of the mass spectra of1,4,7–10 (and their salts) are reported.

Notes: Summary Eight new tetracyclic fused as-triazines (4–6,8,11–13, and15) have been synthesized by conversion and subsequent ring transformation of 1,2-diaminoisoquinolinium (2) and -quinolinium salts (9) with 4-benzoyl-5-phenylfuran-2,3-dione (1). Selective alkylations of the new products revealed that these reactions are governed mainly by the electronic density of the lone pairs as well as by steric effects.

Notes: Abstract The oviposition rhythm in Laspeyresia pomonella (L.) is entrained by light-dark cycles and freeruns in continuous light with a period τ=25.9 hr and in continuous darkness with τ=21.8 hr. In the laboratory as well as in the field, the median of oviposition occurs on average 2.5 hr before the onset of darkness. The codling moth can adapt quickly to a new light regime. Oviposition was resynchronized with a normal light-dark cycle within 48 hr after freerunning for several days in continuous light.

Notes: Abstract Coupling of anthracyclines to high-molecular-weight carriers may alter drug disposition and improve antitumor effects. We have performed a clinical phase I trial of doxorubicin coupled to dextran (70000 m.w.). The drug was administered as single dose i.v. every 21–28 days. Thirteen patients have received a total of 24 courses (median 2; range 1–3). At the starting dose of 40 mg/m2 doxorubicin equivalent (DOXeq), WHO grade IV thrombocytopenia was noted in 2/2 patients. WHO grade IV hepatotoxicity and WHO grade III cardiotoxicity were noted in a patient with preexisting heart disease. Five patients were treated with 12.5 mg/m2 DOXeq. Maximal toxicity at this dose level was WHO grade III thrombocytopenia and local phlebitis (WHO grade II) in 1/5 patients, elevation of alkaline phosphatase (WHO grade III) and WHO grade III vomiting in another patient. Subsequently, five patients received 20 mg/m2 DOXeq. Hepatotoxicity was noted in 5/5 patients (1 × WHO grade IV, 1 × WHO grade III). Thrombocytopenia was noted in 3/5 patients (1 × WHO grade IV, 2 × WHO grade III). At 12.5 mg/m2 DOXeq, a patient diagnosed with a malignant fibrous histiocytoma had stable disease for 4 months. Pharmacokinetic analyses of total and free doxorubicin were performed in plasma and urine. The maximum peak plasma concentration (ppc) for total DOX was 12.3 μg/ml at 40 mg/m2 DOXeq. The area under the plasma concentration time curve (AUC) ranged from 28.83–80.21 μg/ml*h with dose-dependent elimination half lives (t1/2α: 0.02–0.87 h;1/2β: 2.69–11.58 h;1/2γ: 41.44–136.58 h). We conclude that the maximal tolerated dose (MTD) of AD-70 using this schedule is 40 mg/m2 DOXeq. The recommended dose for clinical phase II studies is 12.5 mg/m2 DOXeq.

Notes: Abstract Distributed database systems need speciaal operating system support. Support routines can be implemented inside the kernel or at the user level. Kernel-level functions, while efficient, are hard to implement. User-level implementations are easier but suffer from poor performance and lack of security. This article proposes a new approach to supplement or modify kernel facilities for database transaction processing. Our experimental facility, called Push, is based on an extension language interpreted within the kernel. Our implementation provides the efficiency of kernel-resident code as well as the simplicity and safety of user-level programming. This facility enables experimentation that would be difficult and time-consuming in current environments. The overhead of the Push implementation can be factored out to give a good estimate of the performance of a native kernel implementation. We have used Push to implement several kernel-resident services. In the case of multi-RPC and commit protocols, Push implementations significantly improve performance and scalability over user-level implementations. The experiments show the benefits of Push both as an operational tool for improving transaction processing performance and as an experimental tool for investigating the benefits of operating systems extension without costly implementation.
