Notes: In the Vizianagaram area (E 83°29.442′; N 18°5.418′) of the Eastern Ghats Belt, India, a suite of graphite-bearing calc-silicate granulites, veined by syenitic rocks, developed wollastonite-rich veins at 6–7 kbar and 〉 850 °C. During subsequent near-isobaric cooling wollastonite was replaced by calcite + quartz and a graphic intergrowth of fluorite + quartz ± clinopyroxene. Titanite with variable Al and F contents is present throughout the rock. Combining the compositional variation of titanite and recent experimental data, it is demonstrated that the mineral assemblage, the composition of coexisting fluids and the mobility of Al exert a far greater control on the composition of titanite than pressure, temperature or the whole rock composition. Thermodynamically computed isothermal–isobaric logfO2– logfCO2 and logfF2– logfO2 grids in the systems Ca–Fe–Si–O–F (CISOF; calcite-free) and Ca–Fe–Si–O–F–C–H (CISOFV; calcite-present) demonstrate the influence of bulk rock and fluid compositions on the stability of the fluorite-bearing assemblages in diverse geological environments and resolve the problem of the stability of titanite in fayalite + fluorite-bearing rocks in the Adirondacks. The mineralogy of the studied rocks and the topological constraints tightly fix the logfO2, logfF2 and logfCO2 at −15.8, −30.6 and 4.1, respectively, at 6.5 kbar and c. 730 °C. Because of the similarity in the P–T conditions, the compositions of pore fluids in the fluorite-bearing assemblages of the Adirondacks and the Eastern Ghats Belt have been compared.

Notes: A suite of high-Mg–Al granulites from Sunkarametta, Eastern Ghats Belt, India, shows contrasting prograde assemblages of extremely aluminous orthopyroxene+cordierite+sapphirine and similarly aluminous orthopyroxene+Ti-rich spinel in closely associated domains. Textural and compositional characteristics indicate that both were derived from prograde dehydration–melting of biotite–plagioclase–quartz-bearing protoliths. The former assemblage was stabilized at relatively more magnesian bulk composition. Geothermobarometric data and petrogenetic grid considerations place ‘peak’ metamorphic conditions at c. 950 °C and 9 kbar. Subsequent to peak metamorphism, the rocks cooled to c. 700–750 °C, with slight lowering of pressure, and the retrograde reactions also involved melt–solid interaction. The inferred P–T  trajectory is one of heating–cooling at lower crustal (25–30 km) depths.

Notes: The formation of international mergers is examined in the presence of two kinds of asymmetric information, one when a local firm has private information on market size and the other when a foreign firm has private information on its technology. In each situation, parametric configurations are identified under which a merger offer may or may not be made. It also examines the kind of offer and the probability of its acceptance. The likelihood of a merger beingformed is also related to the basic market size, demand uncertainty, and cost uncertainty. Welfare effects of tax/subsidy policies by the host country are also analyzed.

Notes: As ceilings on foreign shareholdings are withdrawn during liberalization, multinationals enter through fully owned subsidiaries that compete with their own joint ventures, unless local partners permit them to raise their stakes. In a framework of quantity competition, this paper demonstrates that an entry threat is more credible when joint venture investment is reversible, the units are independently managed and the local stake is high. Further, profitability of horizontal merger between the units encourages a share reallocation, while its absence favours a new subsidiary. Under irreversible investment, the threat is less credible and both share reallocations or new subsidiaries are less likely.

Notes: We develop a method for measuring absolute two-photon absorption cross sections (σ2) and employ it to determine the σ2 of Rhodamine-6G in methanol (16.2±2.4 GM at 806 nm). Our measurement calibrates the relative excitation spectrum previously reported for this chromophore. The method is based on our derivation of an analytical expression describing the transmission of Gaussian laser pulses through a two-photon absorbing medium. The expression is valid for arbitrary absorber thickness, at all distances from the focus. This generalizes the prevalent "z-scan" (translation of the sample along the beam direction) technique for measuring two-photon absorbance, removing the requirements of a "thin" (thickness (very-much-less-than) Rayleigh range of the focused laser beam) sample and of placing the sample at the focus. This leads to an improvement of the sensitivity of the technique by over two orders of magnitude, enabling measurement of the two-photon absorption cross sections of even weakly absorbing specimens at moderate intensities. The results are significant for applications such as nonlinear microscopy, optical data storage and optical power limiting. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Moisture sensors based on porous alumina were designed and fabricated to detect and measure the concentration of moisture in gases. In the thin alumina disks taken, the surface and penetration effect has been considered during the process of adsorption and absorption of water molecules through pores and grain boundaries. Three different fabrication techniques, the tape casting technique, pelletization, and porous thick film, have been tried to achieve the desired moisture-sensing property of the samples. Different types of electrode structures and designs were also investigated and optimized to obtain maximum sensitivity. Electrodes were formed by screen printing the samples with thick film conductive pastes. The planar porous alumina sensor so obtained is found to be sensitive in the range of the 100–1000 ppmv level of moisture. The response time of the sensor in the ppmv range is approximately 2 min, and at higher concentrations of moisture it shows quasilinear dependency on the moisture content. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Organizational learning in inter-firm exchange relationships poses a double-edged sword. On one hand, inter-firm learning is a desirable extension of organizational learning, developing a firm's knowledge base, and providing fresh insights into strategies, markets, and relationships. On the other hand, inter-firm learning can lead to unintended and undesirable skills transfer, resulting in the potential dilution of competitive advantage. This risk can be exacerbated by disparities in inter-firm learning, resulting in uneven distribution of benefits and risks in the collaborative relationship. This paper articulates these two different views on inter-firm learning, and second, develops a framework for the role of governance in regulating knowledge transfer. In particular, appropriate governance mechanisms must be crafted which match the learning intentions of the partners, the type of knowledge sought, and the designed duration for the collaboration, so as to maximize the benefits of learning while minimizing the risks. Implications for strategy and future research are offered.

Notes: Considers two forms of strategic alliances, technological and marketing, and examines how these alliances foster formation and maintenance of intellectual capital. Empirical evidence suggests that on average, strategic alliances do create value for shareholders that is consistent with the creation of intellectual capital. Between the two, technological alliances are potentially more beneficial than marketing alliances, and more likely to create intellectual capital. Empirical evidence is consistent with the notion that the gains from alliances are not shared equally by all the partners. When intellectual capital is created by the smaller or financially weaker partner, the return may be appropriately captured by the owner of such capital through strategic alliances. However, if the intellectual capital is created by the larger or financially stronger firm which moves first in an alliance relationship, the return on this intellectual capital may be subject to opportunistic exploitation by the late moving partner.
