    Notes: Numerical solutions are presented for the problem of steady laminar combined convection flows in vertical parallel plate ducts. Axial diffusion is neglected in the analysis and the resulting governing equations, which are of a parabolic nature, are expressed in an implicit finite difference scheme using a vorticity-stream function formulation and are solved using a marching technique. A constant wall temperature boundary condition is used and investigations are restricted to the case Pr = 0.72. A large range of values of the ratio Gr/Re is considered, -300 ≤ Gr/Re ≤ 70, and comparisons are made with the case of pure forced convection. For large values of the ratio |Gr/Re| reverse flow occurs in the duct. A modification to the standard marching technique is introduced and complete solutions are achieved for these situations for the first time. Results are presented in terms of velocity profiles, Nusselt numbers, friction factors and temperature distributions.

    Notes: The finite strip method is extended to the non-linear, static analysis of cylindrical shells. Large deflection effects are incorporated via first-order non-linearities in the strain-displacement relations, and material non-linearities are included via the von Mises yield criteria and associated flow rule. Numerical results are presented for various example problems including the diaphragm supported cylindrical shell-roof problem, an axisymmetric cylindrical shell loaded by radial pressure, the cylindrical shell-roof problem with clamped curved ends and a pressure loaded cylindrical panel clamped all round. The results are compared with known results from analytical and/or finite element analyses. The results indicate that a single bending mode in the strip direction is sufficient in most cases to yield engineering accuracy for preliminary design purposes.

    Notes: Issues related to the constitutive modelling and computational treatment of strain localization are examined for the class of rate independent solids. The significance of the constitutive description in localization problems is emphasized and constitutive models currently employed are briefly reviewed. Difficulties faced in finite element analysis, fundamentally associated with the loss of ellipticity of the related boundary value problem, and present trends in the computational treatment are discussed and illustrated by numerical examples.

    Notes: A method for generating both equipotential lines and streamlines directly based upon nodal potentials and bilinear shape functions is presented. The method involves post-processing a finite element (FE) solution utilizing typical four-node isoparametric quadrilateral elements. The application of the method can be important in the interpretation of FE analysis results, especially when inhomogeneous, anisotropic, unconfined or/and other complicated conditions exist. Compared with conventional techniques to generate flow nets which depend upon both the potential and stream functions, the method presented is simpler and more powerful.

    Notes: Consider a plane monochromatic electromagnetic wave normally incident on an absorbing dielectric slab, bounded by z = 0 and z = L, and whose electrical parameters ε, μ and σ are arbitrary functions of z. The media on either side of the slab have constant but generally different electrical properties. This paper describes an efficient numerical algorithm for calculating the electromagnetic field within the slab, as well as its absolute reflection and transmission coefficients. The waveform within the slab is represented by a new complex dependent variable satisfying a modified (complex) Helmholtz equation to be solved subject to mixed inhomogeneous conditions at the boundaries of the slab. If derivatives are replaced by nth-order centred differences, the difference equation set is linear, sparse and efficiently solved by direct recursion. In this paper, complex arithmetic is avoided by replacing the complex Helmholtz equation with two coupled, real, second-order ordinary differential equations. An algorithm of second-order accuracy is developed which leads to a bitridiagonal difference equation set. Calculations are carried out for a variable-property slab problem which can also be solved analytically. Numerical comparisons indicate that the method is accurate and efficient enough that a desk-top computer is a practical computational machine.

    Notes: Abstract Well-data files maintained by petroleum companies and service companies are important sources of data for exploration geologists. To make these data readily accessible and useful for computer studies, three preliminary steps are necessary: (1) systematic data gathering and recording, (2) storage for ready retrieval, and (3) preparation of analysis programs. One important source of geologic data is lithologic descriptions of well cuttings and cores. The practical lithologic data-recording form described here is used routinely at the well site and in the laboratory. It is designed in an 80-column format and uses codes for lithologic characteristics, porosity, and hydrocarbon shows, and forms part of an integrated well-data file. This datarecording form has the advantages that descriptions are made according to a standardized format convenient to use at the well site, and the data are subsequently available in raw form relatively free from interpretive bias. A library of analysis and display programs can be assembled for utilization of the data.
