    Description: Hydrothermal systems with active surface expressions are important natural source of atmospheric mercury. Here we report on the first simultaneous assessment of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) and major volatiles (H2S and CO2) fluxes from the fumarolic system of Pisciarelli, currently the most active at the Campi Flegrei caldera (CFc), Naples (Italy). Thiswas achieved via a GPS-synchronized Lumex and MultiGAS surveywhich extends similar investigations reported elsewhere. GEM concentrations measured in the fumarolic emissions were consistently above background air level close to the degassing area (mean ~ 8 ± 3 ng m−3 on average) and ranged up to 12,000 ng m−3. Our data evidenced pulsed sequences of GEM increases in the fumarole plume, closely matched by temporally consistent increases in CO2 and H2S (r2 =0.9), supporting the idea that major volatiles, such as CO2 acts as potential carrier in transporting GEM within the magmatic/hydrothermal systems. The slope of the best fit calculated for the dispersion of our data provides a GEM/CO2 molar ratio of 1.1 × 10−8 and a GEM/H2S of5×10−6, respectively. These ratios are comparable to those reported for both low(~ 100 °C) and high-T (~250 °C) fumaroles from non-explosive volcanic/hydrothermal degassing systems elsewhere. We adopted an adhoc method that combines video footages and gas measurements to obtain high precision concentration maps of gas emissions used to estimate the total atmospheric GEM, CO2 and H2S flux of about 0.0113, 225059 and 511 t y−1, respectively. The human health risk assessment related to the GEM emissions at Pisciarelli, confirms that, except for the degassing fumarolic area, all the main sites affected by the plume dispersion, always remain well below the safe threshold recommended by the health authorities.

    Description: The eruption of Mt. Etna which occurred on December 24th 2018 was characterized by strombolian activity and fire fountains, emitted by the New South-East Crater and along a fissure that propagated towards the SE. The influence of volcanic emissions on atmospheric deposition was clearly detectable at several kilometres from the source. Wet and dry (bulk) deposition samples were collected each month, through a network of eleven collectors, in the areas of Milazzo, and Priolo between June 2018 and June 2019. They were analysed for major ions and trace elements concentrations. The pH values range from 3.9 to 8.3, while the EC values range from 7 to 396 μS cm-1. An extensive neutralization of the acidity has been recognised mainly due to the suspended alkaline dust particles, which have a buffering role in rainwater. A high load of Na+ and Cl- was observed at all sites, related to the closeness of the study areas to the coast, showing a high positive correlation (R2 = 0.989) along the line of Na+/Cl- ratio in seawater. During the eruption, the volcanic plume was carried by the winds for long distance (more than 300 km) affecting the area of Priolo but not that of Milazzo, which was upwind with respect to Mt. Etna. The impact of volcanic HF was clearly recognised in the samples collected after the eruption. Volcanic SO2 and HCl had a lower impact due to the overwhelming input of anthropogenic sulfate and marine chloride. On the contrary, the signature of the Mt. Etna eruption can be well recognised in the high concentrations of certain trace elements in the samples collected immediately after the eruption. The strongest contrast between affected and non-affected samples was recognised in Al, Cd, and especially in the volatile elements Tl and Te, which are typically enriched in volcanic emissions. The results showed that volcanic eruptions might have a relevant effect on the atmospheric chemistry and on the composition of rainwater up to distances of 80 km from the emission vents.

    Description: Monogenetic eruptions are the most common volcanic activity in the world. However, unrest monitoring data are scarce due to the long intervening quiescence periods. This study analyzes unrest signals recorded in one of the largest monogenetic fields in the Canary Islands, Cumbre Vieja (La Palma). Two seismic swarms were registered in October 2017 and February 2018 with b-values of 1.6 ± 0.1 and 2.3 ± 0.2 respectively suggesting an intense magmatic fluids contribution, gas and/or magma. Both swarms were linked to changes in gas emissions. Increases in hydrogen concentration, and (R/Ra)c up to 7.52±0.05, were recorded before the first swarm, at the sampling point closest to where seismicity was located, indicating a deep gas input. After the second swarm, increases in (R/Ra)c and thoron soil concentration were recorded at two locations. This dataset is compatible with a stalled magmatic intrusion at ca. 25 km depth, with an estimated volume between 5.5·10−4 km3 and 3·10−2 km3.

    Description: Pyroclastic cones are a typical feature on volcanoes characterized by flank activity. Their distribution and orientation are important markers to obtain information on the maximum horizontal compressional stress acting on a volcano. A geophysical survey was performed on the pyroclastic cone of Mt. Vetore (Mt. Etna volcano, Southern Italy) to obtain information on its internal structural setting and to support the standard morphometric analysis. Results highlighted evident frequency peaks at 1.0 Hz inside the cone, which are attenuated away from it. The random decrement method was applied to this peak to compute damping and then to exclude links with anthropogenic sources. Moreover, time-frequency polarization analysis revealed that ambient vibrations are strongly polarized in a narrow frequency band, centered at a frequency of 1.0 Hz, with a preferred oscillation azimuth of 70–90° N. Array measurement of ambient vibrations was also used to obtain a shear wave velocity profile and then to retrieve the main interfaces with high seismic impedance. Results suggest a cone structure having a feeder dike consisting of fractured rocks with thickness of about 50 m surrounded by pyroclastic material lying on a high-velocity substrate. Finally, a 3D model of Mt. Vetore cone was built employing the finite element method to reproduce an experimental modal frequency of the cone itself. The numerical results successfully reproduced the experimental ones collected by the geophysical survey.

    Description: Climate modeling using coastal tree-ring chronologies has yielded the first summer temperature reconstructions for coastal stations along the Gulf of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. These land temperature reconstructions are strongly correlated with nearby sea surface temperatures, indicating large-scale ocean-atmospheric influences. Significant progress has also been made in modeling winter land temperatures and sea surface temperatures from coastal and shipboard stations. In addition to temperature, the pressure variability center over the central North Pacific Ocean (PAC), which is related to the strength and location of the Aleutian Low pressure system, could be extended using coastal tree rings.

Este es el caso del puerto de Buenos Aires y el de Mar del Plata. Éstas dos localidades poseen características geográficas e hidrodinámicas distintas, por lo que resulta de mayor interés comparar los resultados obtenidos. Se discuten los mismos, y la evolución del nivel medio durante esta centuria.

    Description: Climate conditions in land areas of the Pacific Northwest are strongly influenced by atmosphere/ocean variability, including fluctuations in the Aleutian Low, Pacific-North American (PNA) atmospheric circulation modes, and the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). It thus seems likely that climatically sensitive tree-ring data from these coastal land areas would likewise reflect such climatic parameters. In this paper, tree-ring width and maximum lakewood density chronologies from northwestern Washington State and near Vancouver Island, British Columbia, are compared to surface air temperature and precipitation from nearby coastal and near-coastal land stations and to monthly sea surface temperature (SST) and sea level pressure (SLP) data from the northeast Pacific sector. Results show much promise for eventual reconstruction of these parameters, potentially extending available instrumental records for the northeastern Pacific by several hundred years or more.
