Description: Various defects during the manufacture of a high-energy laser monocrystalline silicon reflector will increase the energy absorption rate of the substrate and worsen the optical properties. Micron-scale or larger manufacturing defects have been inhibited by mechanism study and improvement in technology, but the substrate performance still fails to satisfy the application demand. We focus on the changes in the optical properties affected by nanoscale and Angstrom lattice defects on the surface of monocrystalline silicon and acquire the expected high reflectivity and low absorptivity through deterministic control of its defect state. Based on the first principles, the band structures and optical properties of two typical defect models of monocrystalline silicon—namely, atomic vacancy and lattice dislocation—were analyzed by molecular dynamics simulations. The results showed that the reflectivity of the vacancy defect was higher than that of the dislocation defect, and elevating the proportion of the vacancy defect could improve the performance of the monocrystalline silicon in infrared (IR) band. To verify the results of simulations, the combined Ion Beam Figuring (IBF) and Chemical Mechanical Polishing (CMP) technologies were applied to introduce the vacancy defect and reduce the thickness of defect layer. After the process, the reflectivity of the monocrystalline silicon element increased by 5% in the visible light band and by 12% in the IR band. Finally, in the photothermal absorption test at 1064 nm, the photothermal absorption of the element was reduced by 80.5%. Intense laser usability on the monocrystalline silicon surface was achieved, and the effectiveness and feasibility of deterministic regulation of optical properties were verified. This concept will be widely applied in future high-energy laser system and X-ray reflectors.

Description: Safflower honey is a unique type of monofloral honey collected from the nectar of Carthamus tinctorius L. in the Apis mellifera colonies of northwestern China. Scant information is available regarding its chemical composition and biological activities. Here, for the first time, we investigated this honey’s chemical composition and evaluated its in vitro antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Basic physicochemical parameters of the safflower honey samples in comparison to established quality standards suggested that safflower honeys presented a good level of quality. The in vitro antioxidant tests showed that extract from Carthamus tinctorius L. honey (ECH) effectively scavenged DPPH and ABTS+ free radicals. In lipopolysaccharides (LPS) activated murine macrophages inflammatory model, ECH treatment to the cells inhibited the release of nitric oxide and down-regulated the expressions of inflammatory-relating genes (iNOS, IL-1β, TNF-α and MCP-1). The expressions of the antioxidant genes TXNRD, HO-1, and NQO-1, were significantly boosted in a concentration-dependent manner. ECH decreased the phosphorylation of IκBα and inhibited the nuclear entry of the NF-κB-p65 protein, in LPS-stimulated Raw 264.7 cells, accompany with the increased expressions of Nrf-2 and HO-1, suggesting that ECH achieved the anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting NF-κB signal transduction and boosting the antioxidant system via activating Nrf-2/HO-1 signaling. These results, taken together, indicated that safflower honey has great potential into developing as a high-quality agriproduct.

Description: The Mills Cross sonar sensor array, achieved by the virtual element technology, is one way to build a low-complexity and low-cost imaging system while not decreasing the imaging quality. This type of sensor array is widely investigated and applied in sensor imaging. However, the Mills Cross array still holds some redundancy in sensor spatial sampling, and it means that this sensor array may be further thinned. For this reason, the Almost Different Sets (ADS) method is proposed to further thin the Mills Cross array. First, the original Mills Cross array is divided into several transversal linear arrays and one longitudinal linear array. Secondly, the Peak Side Lobe Level (PSLL) of each virtual linear array is estimated in advance. After the ADS parameters are matched according to the thinned ratio of the expectant array, all linear arrays are thinned in order. In the end, the element locations in the thinned linear array are used to determine which elements are kept or discarded from the original Mills array. Simulations demonstrate that the ADS method can be used to thin the Mills array and to further decrease the complexity of the imaging system while retaining beam performance.

Description: One effective measure of radioactive material purification is the use of strippable decontaminants, which effectively coat the pollutant, capture suspended particles in the air, and deposit them onto the surfaces of objects. However, there are some shortcomings in terms of film formation and peelability, such as a brittle coating and poor peelability. Therefore, in order to meet future military and emergency needs, this research investigated the influencing factors in the process of surface strippable decontamination. Experiments included tests for wettability, potential, particle size, strippable performance, tensile performance, ultraviolet transmittance reflectance, and film formation as well as image analysis of photomicrographs from an optical microscope system. These experiments indicate that the strippable decontaminant is a viable means of contamination removal.

Description: This paper aims to present a comparative study into the cascade and series configurations of the organic Rankine cycle based small-scale solar combined cooling, heating and power system for civil application. The energy performance of the systems is studied by developing a thermodynamic model. The simulation model is validated using the literature results. Analyses of the research results indicated that the cascade system can achieve maximum value of the primary energy efficiency of 13.4% for cooling and power generation under solar collecting temperature of 115 °C in cooling mode. The cascade system has more cooling output and less electricity output in cooling mode compared with the series system. In heating mode, the single solar organic Rankine cycle (ORC) operation can achieve highest primary energy efficiency of 19.6% for heating and power generation under solar collecting temperature of 100 °C. Systems with R141b as ORC working fluid show better performance than those with R123 and R1233zd(E).

Description: Nanoscale laser damage precursors generated from fabrication have emerged as a new bottleneck that limits the laser damage resistance improvement of fused silica optics. In this paper, ion beam etching (IBE) technology is performed to investigate the evolutions of some nanoscale damage precursors (such as contamination and chemical structural defects) in different ion beam etched depths. Surface material structure analyses and laser damage resistance measurements are conducted. The results reveal that IBE has an evident cleaning effect on surfaces. Impurity contamination beneath the polishing redeposition layer can be mitigated through IBE. Chemical structural defects can be significantly reduced, and surface densification is weakened after IBE without damaging the precision of the fused silica surface. The photothermal absorption on the fused silica surface can be decreased by 41.2%, and the laser-induced damage threshold can be raised by 15.2% after IBE at 250 nm. This work serves as an important reference for characterizing nanoscale damage precursors and using IBE technology to increase the laser damage resistance of fused silica optics.

Description: The damage repair of fused silica based on the CO2 laser repair technique has been successfully applied in high-power laser systems in the controllable nuclear fusion field. However, this kind of repairing technique mainly focuses on large-scale laser damage with sizes larger than 200 μm, but ignores the influence of cluster small-scale damage with sizes smaller than 50 μm. In order to inhibit the growth of small-scale damage and further improve the effect of fused silica damage repair, this paper carried out a study on the repair of fused silica damage using the magnetorheological (MR) removing method. The feasibility of fused silica damage repairing was verified, and the evolution law of the number, morphology, and the surface roughness of small-scale damage were all analyzed. The results showed that the MR removing method was non-destructive compared to traditional repairing technologies. It not only effectively improved the whole damage repairing rate to more than 90%, but it also restored the optical properties and surface roughness of the damaged components in the repairing process. Based on the study of the MR removing repair law, a combined repairing process of 4 μm MR removal and 700 nm computer controlled optical surfacing (CCOS) removal is proposed. A typical fused silica element was experimentally repaired to verify the process parameters. The repairing rate of small-scale damage was up to 90.4%, and the surface roughness was restored to the level before repairing. The experimental results validate the effectiveness and feasibility of the combined repairing process. This work provides an effective method for the small-scale damage repairing of fused silica components.

Description: The scratches on an optical surface can worsen the performance of elements. The normal process method is removing scratches entirely. However, it is a tough and high-cost requirement of removing extremely deep scratches and maintaining all the other excellent indicators at the same time. As the alternative of removing, we propose the method of scratch morphology transformation to diminish the drawbacks induced by scratches. We measure the morphology of scratches, establish the transformation models and transform them to the needed shape. In engineering applications, transformation can solve scratch drawbacks or limitations in an efficient and effective way. Then, residual scratches become acceptable. The transformation can also be amalgamated into the error figuring processes. Typical scratch transforming examples are experimented and AFM measurement is conducted. We explore the rule of scratch morphology transformation by two typical fabrication means: magnetorheological finishing (MRF) and HF etching. This morphology transforming method is an economical alternative for current defect-free fabrication. That will significantly decrease fabrication time, cost and risk, while the optical quality maintain.

Description: Although industrial activity has brought about rapid economic growth, it also faces the dual challenges of resource constraints and environmental pressure. Industrial ecology (IE) and ecological modernization (EM) are two theories regarding the conceptualization and implementation of sustainable development that emerged from the natural and social sciences, respectively. Over the past three decades, scholars have conducted copious amounts of theoretical and applied research on IE and EM, but comparative studies from an interdisciplinary perspective on the relationship between the two remain relatively rare. On the basis of a bibliometric analysis, this study offers a comprehensive examination of the background, theoretical connotations, and main content of IE and EM, also exploring the role of both theoretical perspectives in the promotion of sustainable industrial development. The findings are fourfold: (1) the research on IE and EM has been increasing year by year, particularly in the past decade; (2) the research is mostly concentrated in developed countries such as the United States and European Union member nations, and contributions from China have increased significantly in recent years; (3) IE has a broader research community than EM and has evolved clearer and more specific research contents and methods; and (4) IE, which analyzes the problems of specific industrial systems, and EM, which constitutes a higher-level institutional policy design, exhibit a trend of cross-fertilization. This study provides a reference for building a more systematic and comprehensive theoretical system of ecological transformation and discusses the future research directions in this field.

Description: Resource and environmental issues related to urban building systems have recently become a hot research topic in the field of urban environmental management research. Taking Jinan city as an example, this paper establishes a system dynamic model for an urban residential building stock system. The simulated results show that the urban residential building stock will be 1.99 × 108 m2 in 2050; and the annual total demolition buildings will be at 3.36 × 106 m2 in 2082. Policy measures were developed based on four important action fields such as per capita floor area (PCFA), the building structure proportion of new construction, lifetime of the residential building, and the recycling of the C&D waste. Among these approaches, the set of policy measures focusing on the recycling of C&D waste appears to be more effective in reducing environmental and resource impacts than the other three fields. It is also found that the recycling of brick and concrete waste plays a considerable role in reducing environment and resource impacts due to the development of urban residential building stock with the lapse of time.
