Description: A floor aquifuge usually bends and fails when mining above a confined aquifer, which may lead to water inrush disaster. The floor aquifuge was simplified as a thin disc model in this paper, and a series of coupled bending-seepage tests of sandstone were carried out by a patent test system. The variation characteristics of load-displacement, load-time, and permeability-time were analyzed. The deflection and stress in the thin disc rock samples were deduced; the initiation and propagation of cracks were analyzed. The failure behavior of the thin disc rock samples was described. It shows the following: (1) The bending failure behavior relates to the stress distribution and crack evolution inside the thin disc. (2) The main cause of crack initiation is a tension-shear failure. (3) The 5 mm thickness thin discs form petal-shaped cracks, due to tensile stress, while petal-shaped cracks only appear at the cap block of the 10 mm discs, which are sheared into two pieces along the conical surface with an inclination about 45°. (4) Water inrush occurs after bending failure in the floor aquifuge, and it is an opportune moment to grout along the crack propagation trend lines to prevent the water inrush disasters.

Description: Facing more and more severe global warming problems, renewable energy, as an alternative to traditional fossil fuels, is attracting more and more attentions due to its capability of reducing carbon emission. This paper considers two-tier HetNets with orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), where the macro base station (MBS) is powered by power grid and small base stations (SBSs) have hybrid energy supplies. Through smart grid, SBSs can share their renewable energy with each other. We consider the problem of cross-layer interference caused by spectrum reuse, the burst of user data, and the randomness of renewable energy arrivals. Through energy cooperation, this paper investigates maximizing the time-average energy efficiency of SBSs. Based on user data queue and SBS energy queue, the optimal problem is decoupled into two subproblems by Lyapunov optimization: resource allocation subproblem and energy scheduling and energy cooperation subproblem. By solving two subproblems, the online solution to the optimization problem is obtained. Through theoretical analysis and simulations, both user data queues and energy queues have an upper bound, the network is stable, and the proposed algorithm performs better than the basic algorithm without energy cooperation.

Description: In this paper, we study the synchronization problem for nonlinearly coupled complex dynamical networks on time scales. To achieve synchronization for nonlinearly coupled complex dynamical networks on time scales, a pinning control strategy is designed. Some pinning synchronization criteria are established for nonlinearly coupled complex dynamical networks on time scales, which guarantee the whole network can be pinned to some desired state. The model investigated in this paper generalizes the continuous-time and discrete-time nonlinearly coupled complex dynamical networks to a unique and general framework. Moreover, two numerical examples are given for illustration and verification of the obtained results.

Description: This work analyzes the passivity for a set of Markov jumping reaction-diffusion neural networks limited by time-varying delays under Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions, respectively, in which Markov jumping is used to describe the variations among system parameters. To overcome some difficulties originated from partial differential terms, the Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional that introduces a new integral term is proposed and some inequality techniques are also adopted to obtain the delay-dependent stability conditions in terms of linear matrix inequalities, which ensures that the designed neural networks satisfy the specified performance of passivity. Finally, the advantages and effectiveness of the obtained results are verified via displaying two illustrated examples.

Description: Background. Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a life-threatening disease caused by a variety of factors, and once it progresses to severe acute pancreatitis, the prognosis is poor. The purpose of this study was to investigate the diagnostic value of the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) for predicting the severity of acute pancreatitis. Materials and Methods. We searched the databases of PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library to identify eligible studies using the NLR to predict the severity of AP. The sensitivity (SEN), specificity (SPE), negative likelihood ratio (NLR), positive likelihood ratio (PLR), diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) were combined using a bivariate mixed model. Results. A total of 10 articles containing 394 cases and 1319 controls were included in the study. The combined SEN, SPE, NLR, PLR, DOR, and AUC are 79% (73%-84%), 71% (59%-80%), 0.30 (0.21-0.41), 2.7 (1.8-4.0), 9 (5-18), and 0.82 (0.78-0.85), respectively. Conclusions. NLR has a moderately high diagnostic value in predicting the severity of acute pancreatitis.

Description: Data stream classification becomes a promising prediction work with relevance to many practical environments. However, under the environment of concept drift and noise, the research of data stream classification faces lots of challenges. Hence, a new incremental ensemble model is presented for classifying nonstationary data streams with noise. Our approach integrates three strategies: incremental learning to monitor and adapt to concept drift; ensemble learning to improve model stability; and a microclustering procedure that distinguishes drift from noise and predicts the labels of incoming instances via majority vote. Experiments with two synthetic datasets designed to test for both gradual and abrupt drift show that our method provides more accurate classification in nonstationary data streams with noise than the two popular baselines.

Description: Hydraulic drive mode enables legged robots to have excellent characteristics, such as greater power-to-weight ratios, higher load capacities, and faster response speeds than other robots. Nowadays, highly integrated valve-controlled cylinder, called the hydraulic drive unit (HDU), is employed to drive the joints of these robots. However, there are some common problems in the HDU resulted from hydraulic systems, such as strong nonlinearity, asymmetry dynamic characteristics between positive and negative moving directions of the piston rod, and time-varying parameters. It is difficult to obtain the desired control performance by just using classical control methods such as the traditional PID control. In this paper, a position controller that combines fuzzy terminal sliding mode control (FTSMC) and time delay estimation (TDE) is proposed, in which FTSMC adopts a compound reaching law which combines the tangent function and the exponential reaching law. Moreover, the fuzzy control is introduced to adjust the parameters of the reaching law in real time to improve the adaptability of FTSMC. Based on FTSMC, the external uncertain disturbance of the HDU position control system is estimated by TDE, which ensures the simplicity of system modeling and the normal application of FTSMC. Finally, the control effects of the controller combining FTSMC and TDE are verified on the HDU performance test platform and the load simulation experiment platform. The experimental results show that the proposed controller greatly improves the system position control performance and has a strong disturbance rejection ability and a good adaptability under different working conditions. The above research results can provide an important reference and experimental basis for the inner loop of compliance control of legged robots.

Description: The fiber optical current transformer (FOCT) with sine wave modulation has been widely used in the DC transmission project, while its fault rate is much higher than that of an electromagnetic current transformer, which seriously threatens the safe operation of power grid. In order to investigate the fault mechanism of FOCT, the output signal model of the FOCT photodetector is established, and its basic methods of modulation and demodulation are analyzed to explore the influencing factors of the signal processing method used in the calculation of measured current. It is found that the reduction of the second harmonic component in the photodetector output is the root cause of FOCT fault, and the optical path, modulation signal amplitude, and measured current are important factors affecting the second harmonic component. The influencing law of three factors on the second harmonic component is calculated by simulation and the characteristic differences between them are given. Finally, the fault simulation test of FOCT light intensity and a modulation circuit were carried out in the laboratory, and the results verify the correctness of theoretical analysis. The research in this paper provides reference for fault analysis and reliability improvement of FOCT.

Description: According to the advantages of high tensile resistance and high shear strength of composite steel plate, a new antiexplosion protection method of composite steel plate lining structure is put forward. The numerical model of explosion impact of subway tunnel with composite steel plate lining structure was established by dynamic analysis software. The transient dynamic response of lining structure with the composite steel plate was simulated when explosion occurred. The research results show that the influence of explosive quantity on each point of composite steel plate lining structure is different and the change of acceleration near the centre of the detonation source is generally greater than the multiple of the increase of explosive quantity. The increase of velocity and displacement is basically consistent with the quantity of explosive. The influence of axial stress on the lining structure is the least, and the influence of the lining structure is greater in the y-direction than in the x-direction. The research results can provide the plan and basis for the emergency response of the subway tunnel.

Description: A new significant aspect in the utilization of hydrothermal energy in China is the large-scale exploitation using multiwells from a single geothermal site. This requires detailed hydrogeochemical investigations to gain insight about deep groundwater circulation. At the Xiongxian karst geothermal site in North China, where the demonstration project of large-scale utilization was conducted, 40 boreholes with depths from 1000 to 1800 m were drilled in a region of 50 km2. A total of 25 water samples were collected, and temperature loggings were conducted in 16 of these wells. At the site scale, the hydraulic head was observed to decline from SW to NE, i.e., orthogonal to that at the regional scale. Moreover, the geothermal groundwater temperature, borehole temperature gradient, and heat flow in the caprock all exhibited the same spatial trend with the groundwater head. Based on the hydrogeochemical and temperature logging data, this was explained by mixing of lateral recharging groundwater with ascending thermal fluids through the Xiongxian Fault, after excluding the causes of pumping activities and geologic structure. In addition, geothermal groundwater 81Kr age was estimated to be approximately 760 k yr, which is much older than the 14C age of 20 to 30 k yr. The older 81Kr age implies a low renewability of deep groundwater circulation, which should be considered in terms of sustainable management in relation to the large-scale utilization of geothermal resources.
