Notes: Summary Torsional vibration of a body composed of two conical bars, the upper one being made of non-homogeneous material and the lower of a homogeneous material, by the application of a shearing stress on the upper end has been considered in the problem. It is assumed that the lower end of the composite body is fixed and the lateral surface is free from shearing stress.

Notes: Summary Propagation and the dispersion equation of love waves for a few generalised models of heterogeneous crust over a heterogeneous mantle have been investigated. Dispersion equations obtained by a few earlier authors have been shown to be the special cases of the above results.

Notes: Abstract A critical analysis of the puffing activity and transcribing activity patterns of different sites of the X-chromosome of the male and female larval salivary glands of Drosophila hydei has been presented. The results show that within the limitations of the resolving power of the technique and variability inherent in the general chromosomal conditions the puffing activities of the different sites of the X-chromosome are very much alike in the two sexes. Of the 15 puffing sites in the X-chromosome, most of the sites either show good concordance in the two sexes or resemble in their highest class value. Only 4 sites (4CD, 8A, 16C and 20B) show considerable discordance in the activity pattern between male and female. Incorporation of 3H-uridine in the X-chromosome also reveals that there is indeed a reasonable degree of superimposition of the number of silver grains in the X-chromosomal puffs of the two sexes. Whatever disparity that exists between the grain numbers in the two sexes can be explained on the basis of sister-class compensation. These results have been interpreted as evidence in support of the piece-meal mechanism of dosage compensation in Drosophila, operating through hyperactivation in the male.

Notes: Abstract Detailed Fourier analysis of line shapes has been carried out in hexagonal zirconium metal in the cold-worked and partially recovered states. X-ray diffraction profiles from the fault-unaffected 10.0, 00.2, 11.0, 11.2 and 00.4 and fault-affected 10.1, 10.3, 20.1, 10.2 and 20.2 reflections have been recorded using a counter diffractometer for this purpose. The line shape analysis has shown small anisotropy as regards the domain sizes and strains, the average values being of the order of 280 Å and 2.08×10−3 respectively in the cold-worked state with a small recovery at a higher temperature. Least-square solution applied to fault-affected reflections has yielded very small concentration of deformation faults with a negligible proportion of growth faults. Results are found to be consistent with earlier X-ray measurements and recent electron microscope investigations on zirconium.

Notes: Based on the theory of rate process for viscous flow, an expression for Φ (FLORY constant) has been given according to which Φ should depend on the polymer-solvent pair and temprature. The variation of Φ, [η], and k, the latter two being fundamental terms of the equation c/ηsp = l/η - kc, has been utilised for the determination of unperturbed dimension of polymer molecules in solution. The importance of k and the alternative expressions for the same are discussd. The values of \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$\[ \left( {{{\overline {\text{r}_\text{0}^\text{2} } } \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{\overline {\text{r}_\text{0}^\text{2} } } \text{M}}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} \text{M}}} \right)^{1/2} $\end{document} are found to be in good agreement with the literature values.
