Notes: This paper is intended to serve as a contribution to the study of school textbooks in the People's Republic of China, and, in particular, as a first look at such books since the Cultural Revolution and the death of Chairman Mao Zedong. Because of the nature of the sample it makes no claim to being definitive. But the near-impossibility of obtaining such books abroad and the dominant role they play in the Chinese classroom give the subject some importance.

Notes: [Auszug] We wish to point out that past studies of flame-noise generation2-4 at this centre have shown that the pressure in the sound wave originating from a turbulent flame is proportional to the time derivative of the rate of combustion. Because the volume of the luminous reaction zone is a measure of the ...

Notes: Abstract Within the volcanic sequence of the twin volcanoes of Lyttelton and Akaroa, Banks Peninsula, New Zealand a number of different magma series have been distinguished. An early series of hawaiites (McQueens Valley Formation) was erupted about 32 m.y. ago and is of transitional or mildly tholeiitic chemistry. Stratigraphically above the McQueens Valley Formation, but unconformably overlain by the main volcanic dome sequence, is a unit of rhyolite (Gebbies Pass Rhyolites) which is not directly related to the earlier or later basaltic volcanism. The rhyolite was probably formed during intracrustal melting which was related to the rise of basaltic magma into the crust. Between 12 and 9.7 m.y. a large volcanic dome, composed mainly of hawaiite, was built at Lyttelton. Dykes, which intrude the Lyttelton volcanic sequence, range in composition from basalt to trachyte. Late, mildly alkalic, basaltic flank flows (7.5−5.8 m.y.) occur in several areas and they, and the differentiated rocks of the dyke swarm can be related by a crystal fractionation model which has been quantitatively tested. Following construction of the Lyttelton dome a second larger dome was built at Akaroa between 9 and 7.5 m.y. The rocks of the Akaroa Volcano are principally hawaiites but rocks ranging in composition through to trachyte also occur. The differentiated rocks of the Akaroa volcano have derived from the basaltic rocks by a crystal fractionation controlled process, operating during ascent through the crust. None of the Banks Peninsula basalts appear to have derived from primitive (pyrolitic) mantle material, but progressive changes in the chemistry of the basalts with time implies that the mantle source regions were evolving geochemically as partial melting proceeded. Later lavas tend to be more alkalic and to have lower MgO/FeO ratios than earlier lavas. The volcanic rocks of the Banks Peninsula volcanoes were derived by fractional removal of olivine, plagioclase, clinopyroxene, magnetite and apatite from ascending basaltic magma batches. Variations between the suites reflect differences between the parental magma batches.

Notes: Summary The effect of temperature on respiration rate has been established, using Cartesian divers, for the meiofaunal sabellid polychaeteManayunkia aestuarina, the free-living nematodeSphaerolaimus hirsutus and the harpacticoid copepodTachidius discipes from a mudflat in the Lynher estuary, Cornwall, U.K. Over the temperature range normally experienced in the field, i.e. 5–20° C the size-compensated respiration rate (R c) was related to the temperature (T) in °C by the equation Log10 R c=-0.635+0.0339T forManayunkia, Log10 R c=0.180+0.0069T forSphaerolaimus and Log10 R c=-0.428+0.0337T forTachidius, being equivalent toQ 10 values of 2.19, 1.17 and 2.17 respectively. In order to derive the temperature response forManayunkia a relationship was first established between respiration rate and body size: Log10 R=0.05+0.75 Log10 V whereR=respiration in nl·O2·ind-1·h-1 andV=body volume in nl. TheQ 10 values are compared with values for other species derived from the literature. From these limited data a dichotomy emerges: species with aQ 10≏2 which apparently feed on diatoms and bacteria, the abundance of which are subject to large short term variability, and species withQ 10≏1 apparently dependent on more stable food sources.

Notes: Abstract The acute (30 min) responses of heart and scaphognathite activities ofCrangon crangon on exposure to concentrations of 1–20 mg Cd, Cu or Zn 1−1 are increased beat frequencies. The relative magnitude of response(Δ f) is linearly related to immediate pretreatment frequency(f) and standardised responses(Δ fs) are given forf values of 70 and 100 beats min−1 for hearts and scaphognathites, respectively.Δ fs values for each organ are also linearly related to test concentration for each metal. Qualitative changes to organ activities described include an increased incidence of scaphognathite reversals in concentrations of 5.0 mg Cu 1−1 and in 20.0 mg Zn 1−1. Chronic (13 days) exposure to incipient lethal levels of the test metals produced increases in scaphognathite rates of the Cd-treated animals and in heart and scaphognathite rates of the coppertreated animals. The general applicability of these methods to studies of pollution stress in decapods is discussed.

Notes: The resistivities of commercial octyl phthalatel plasticizers have been measured after treatments of heating, drying, purification by chromatography and addition of salts. The resistivity of pure plasticizer is high but is lowered by water, acid and alcohol. The theory to explain the observations is advanced.
