    Description: Host cell factors act together with regulatory genes of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) to control virus production. Human-Chinese hamster ovary hybrid cell clones were used to probe for human chromosomes involved in regulating HIV gene expression. DNA transfection experiments showed that 4 of 18 clones had high levels of HIV gene expression measured by both extracellular virus production and transactivation of the HIV long terminal repeat in the presence of the trans-activator (tat) gene. Karyotype analyses revealed a 94% concordance (17/18) between human chromosome 12 and HIV gene expression. A tunable dye laser, alone or in combination with a pump laser, ionizes atoms by resonant excitation processes; the ions are then analyzed in the mass spectrometer.     Description: Research at NASA Lewis Research Center gave the opportunity to incorporate new control volumes in the Denton 3-D finite-volume time marching code. For duct flows, the new control volumes require no transverse smoothing and this allows calculations with large transverse gradients in properties without significant numerical total pressure losses. Possibilities for improving the Denton code to obtain better distributions of properties through shocks were demonstrated. Much better total pressure distributions through shocks are obtained when the interpolated effective pressure, needed to stabilize the solution procedure, is used to calculate the total pressure. This simple change largely eliminates the undershoot in total pressure down-stream of a shock. Overshoots and undershoots in total pressure can then be further reduced by a factor of 10 by adopting the effective density method, rather than the effective pressure method. Use of a Mach number dependent interpolation scheme for pressure then removes the overshoot in static pressure downstream of a shock. The stability of interpolation schemes used for the calculation of effective density is analyzed and a Mach number dependent scheme is developed, combining the advantages of the correct perfect gas equation for subsonic flow with the stability of 2-point and 3-point interpolation schemes for supersonic flow.

    Notes: Relative momentum densities have been measured for the outermost occupied π orbitals of acetylene, propyne, 2-butyne, and perfluoro-2-butyne using the (e, 2e) technique with an improved multiple detector spectrometer. The results, when compared with suitably averaged quantum mechanical calculations, show systematic differences between the molecules which can be interpreted in terms of wave function averages and differences using the ΔB(r) functions. A striking feature of the data is the significant momentum density at zero momentum for all of the molecules, in contrast to the calculations that all show zero momentum density. Ground state molecular distortions are discussed as a possible cause of the effect.

    Notes: The distribution of electron momentum density has been measured for the outermost occupied orbitals of the vinyl halides and ethylene using the (e,2e) technique. In contrast to the ionization potentials for these π orbitals which decrease monotonically from vinyl fluoride to vinyl iodide, the values of the momenta where the distributions are a maximum, pmax, increase from the fluoride through the bromide and then shift back to a lower value for the iodide. This observation can be analyzed in terms of B(r), the Fourier transform of the observed momentum distribution, and ΔB(r), the difference between B(r) functions. The shape of ΔB(r) for the fluoride, chloride, and bromide in comparison to ethylene reflects the effect of the carbon–halogen antibonding interaction in these vinyl halides. On the other hand, in vinyl iodide the antibonding interaction is compensated for by the diffuse iodine 5p character of the molecular orbital. The relation of these observations to chemical properties of the vinyl halides is discussed along with differences between experiment and calculations at low momentum.

    Notes: A strained layer of Si1−x Gex (As)/Si has been grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) with the As dopant introduced by 1 keV ion implantation during growth. Analysis of the layer was made using secondary-ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), Rutherford backscattering (RBS), and proton-induced x-ray emission (PIXE)/channeling, using 2 MeV H+ ions. The layer thickness (∼1.4 μm) and composition (x∼0.015; nAs ∼6×1018 cm−3) measurements by SIMS, RBS, and PIXE were in agreement. RBS, PIXE/channeling showed that the crystalline quality of the strained layer was equivalent to that of the Si substrate. The substitutional fraction (∼0.75) of the As dopant was determined by PIXE/channeling.

    Notes: Electrical measurements of n+-GaAs/π-(Al,Ga)As/π-GaAs semiconductor-insulator-semiconductor (SIS) heterostructure capacitors and field-effect transistors (FET's) show that the (Al,Ga)As/GaAs heterojunction abruptness is well preserved for an arsine flash anneal of 1 s at temperatures up to ∼900 °C. The heterostructure stability is also preserved for a low-dose silicon implant across the (Al,Ga)As/GaAs heterojunction and subsequent annealing. Arsenic overpressure is found to be necessary, even for short time annealing, to prevent excessive As loss from a GaAs or (Al,Ga)As surface. High mobility enhance–deplete heterostructure SISFET's with sharp current versus voltage (I-V) turn-on characteristics have been fabricated using ion implantation and arsine flash anneal.

    Notes: An electron spectrograph is described that covers electron energies from 400 eV to 200 keV with an energy resolution of 10%. This overlaps the range of electrostatic deflection devices at low energy and solid state detectors at high energy. The spectrograph uses magnetic deflection of the electrons to achieve energy separation and images the full range of energies on a single plane. The magnetic circuit uses the fringing field of two axially located magnets to attain the large energy range. Six separate electron beams can be dispersed in the field, each entering the circuit from a different angle. This is a particular advantage when measuring plasma electron three-dimensional velocity distributions. The angular response of the instrument is particularly favorable and the stray magnetic field is sufficiently low to meet spacecraft requirements. Compared with electrostatic deflection devices, the spectrograph is particularly advantageous for measuring high energy electron plasma velocity distribution functions with fast time resolution at modest energy resolution.
