    Description: This study is an attempt to evaluate the biomonitoring capabilities of rock oyster, Saccostrea cucullata, for mercury (Hg) pollution. The oyster and sediment samples were collected from 10 rocky habitats of Qeshm and Hormoz Islands in the Persian Gulf. The concentration of mercury in the shell and soft tissues of the oysters and sediments were analyzed using an advanced mercury analyzer. Biota-sediment accumulation factor (BSAF) was calculated based on the ratio of Hg concentrations in soft tissues to that in sediments.The results showed that the rate of mercury accumulation in the soft tissues of the oyster was significantly higher than that in its shell (P 〈 0.05). There was a significant correlation between mercury concentrations in the soft tissues and the sediments (r =0.75). According to BSAF, soft tissues of the oyster were recognized as an appropriate indicator for biomonitoring mercury. The present study generally supports the usability of soft tissue of S. cucullata as a sensitive biomonitoring organ to warn mercury pollution in the Persian Gulf.

    Description: We determined bioaccumulation of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Ni and Hg) in the muscle, gill and liver organs of Barbus xanthopterus in summer 2009 in Karoon River, south west of Iran. Gill net was used to sample 48 random size fish specimens from Karoon River downward of Ahwaz city (Shekariyeh 3 village). The tissues were extracted and the elements were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Concentrations of heavy metals Cd, Pb, Ni , Hg in muscle tissue of Barbus xanthopterus were 1.679, 2.37, 1.16, 1.29mg/kg dry wt and in gill were 2.17, 2.92, 1.44, 1.34mg/kg dry wt and in liver were 1.92, 2.79, 1.31, 1.43mg/kg dry wt, respectively. All the results were statistically significant (P 0.05). The concentrations of heavy metals were higher than standards of the World Health Organization (WHO) in the muscle tissue of Barbus xanthopterus in Karoon River.

    Description: Cochlodinium polykrikoides was bloomed in the Persian Gulf for the first time in September 2008, started from the Strait of Hormuz and then spread out towards the northern parts covering most of the areas of the Gulf and lasted 8 months. In order to find out environmental conditions during the bloom, a monthly sampling program was carried out in seven surface stations in 2008-2009. At each station, three samples (triplicates) were collected for phytoplankton analysis and also one sample for environmental analyses, including salinity, chlorophyll a and nutrients. Blooms of C. polykrikoides were observed with a seawater temperature of 20.1 to 31.0 °C, salinity 37.0-40.1 ppt and nutrient concentration ranges during the bloom and red tide were 0.064-0.707 mg/l nitrate + nitrite and 0.001-1.66 mg/l phosphate, respectively. Maximum of C. polykrikoides abundance was measured 26 × 106 cells L-1 in October 2008. Kruscal wallis test demonstrated a significant difference in densities and chlorophyll-a in different months and seasons not in different stations. This study showed increase of temperature (〉31.0 °C) stopped bloom and red tide due to C. polykrikoides in both the eastern and middle sampling stations but in the western stations was determined decrease in nutrient amounts as the major factor therefore increased nutrient of coastal waters, and environmental conditions could have efficacy the occurrence of this dinoflagellate.

    Description: Levels of contaminants in fish are of particular interest because of the potential risk to humans consuming them. This paper examines the levels of cadmium, lead, zinc and copper in liver and muscle tissue of Esox lucius and in sediments from the Anzali international wetland in Iran. The wetland is a nursery and feeding habitat for fish species both from the lagoon and the Caspian Sea, which are consumed by the local inhabitants and others. Eleven main rivers discharge agricultural, industrial, urban and municipal wastes into this wetland. Twenty five Esox lucius specimens, with a mean weight of 804.6±121g and mean length of 430.7± 2mm were collected from the wetland by multi mesh gill nets in September and December 2007.. The age was determined from scale samples according to the annual ring structure. Average concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn accumulated in the mid-dorsal muscle tissue (filleted and skinned) of fish were 0.001, 0.21±0.02, 0.13±0.01 and 2.55±0.18 µg.g-1, respectively. The concentrations of these metals in liver samples were Cd: 0.0014± Cu: 0.96± 0.61, Pb: 0.11 ± 0.04 and Zn: 2.46±1.5 µg.g-1. Significant positive correlations were detected between Zn and Cu with body weight, while negative correlations were found between Pb and body weight. The concentrations of Zn, Cu and Cd were below the maximum allowable concentrations for fish proposed by WHO and MAFF (safe for human consumption) but concentration of Pb exceeded the standard levels.

    Description: Microbiological, chemical and sensory changes of fish burgers prepared from deep flounder (Pseudorhombus elevatus) and brushtooth lizardfish (Saurida undosquamis) were determined during storage at -18ºC for 5 months. Microbiological counts were including total plate count (TPC), total coliform (TC), Staphylococcus aureus, Psychotropic and Escherichia coli decreased throughout the frozen storage . Reduction of microbial load in brushtooth lizardfish was higher than that in deep flounder, except for Staphylococcus aureus counts that was almost equal in both groups. There was a significant increase in pH value in both groups (P〈0.05) in first and second months of storage only. Moisture content increased in both groups at the end of 5th month, with increase of moisture in deep flounder fish burgers being higher than that in brushtooth lizardfish burgers. TVB-N values in both groups increased significantly (P〈0.05 and P〈0.008 for deep flounder and brushtooth lizardfish burgers, respectively) at the end of the second month, however, there was a decrease or no significant change afterward. TBA value of deep flounder fish burgers had a significant decrease (P〈0.05) as storage time continued, however, it increased significantly in brushtooth lizardfish burgers at the end of second month (P〈0.006) following by a decrease at the end of storage period. Peroxide value (PV) in both groups increased significantly (P〈0.05 and P〈0.002 in deep flounder and brushtooth lizardfish burgers, respectively) during storage time but a significant decrease was observed at the end of third and fourth months (P〈0.005 and P〈0.001 in deep flounder and brushtooth lizardfish burgers, respectively). Sensory parameters (color, texture, taste and general acceptability) for two groups decreased significantly (P〈0.003 for all parameters in 2 groups) during storage with deep flounder fish burgers receiving higher scores than brushtooth lizardfish burgers at the beginning and end of the storage period.

    Description: An experiment was conducted to evaluate the possibility of adaptation, growth and survival of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) with 0.3g initial weight and red tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) with 0.7g initial weight in underground brackish water. Fry of Nile tilapia and red tilapia imported from Indonesia and after passing larviculture (25g) were examined separately in fiber glass tank by two replicate. Fish were fed at a restricted feeding program according to standard table during the light period. The results showed that some growth factors such as final weight, final length, daily growth rate, specific growth rate and weight gain in Nile tilapia were slightly higher than red tilapia but other factors such as survival and feed conversion rate in red tilapia were slightly higher than Nile tilapia. There were no significantly differences at 99% level among these factors. Length-weight relationship equation was w = 0.012×TL3.189 in Nile tilapia and w = 0.014×TL3.119 in red tilapia (r2 = 0.99), b value were 3.189 and 3.119 respectively in Nile and red tilapia representing isometric growth. According to the reliable growth and high survival rate (98%), it seems that both Nile and red tilapia could be good candidates for rearing in brackish water condition.

    Description: In this work the effect of different concentrations of chitosan (1 and 2 %), essential oil (EO) of Pistacia atlantica subsp. kurdica (1 and 2 %) and chitosan –EO (1 % chitosan + 1 % EO) on the lipid oxidation indexes (peroxide and Thiobarbituric acid (TBA)) and also the percent of moisture and free fatty acids in fish were determined during storage. During the storage period the coating contains a combination of EO and chitosan (1% chitosan + 1% EO) in compared with other coatings had the highest content of moisture and the lowest amount of free fatty acids, peroxide and Thiobarbituric acid index and had the best situation in reduction oxidative rancidity.

    Description: The concentrations of Cd, Pb, Ni and Hg were determined in gill, liver and muscle of Barbus xanthopterus in down streams of Karoon and Dez Rivers during summer 2009. Heavy metal concentrations varied significantly, depending on the types of the tissue in fish species. The levels of heavy metals such as Cd, Pb, Ni and Hg in the Barbus xanthopterus of Karoon River were higher than in Barbus xanthopterus of Dez River (P〈0.05). In Karoon and Dez Rivers, the concentrations of Cd, Pb and Ni were in the sequence gill〉liver〉muscle. The concentration of Hg in Karoon River was in the sequence liver〉gill〉muscle but, in Dez River, it was in the sequence liver〉muscle〉gill. Among heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Ni and Hg), the accumulation of Pb was more than other heavy metals in fish (P〈0.05). In both rivers, the accumulation of heavy metals in muscle of fish was higher than the world health organization (WHO) standard.

    Description: We collected 69 samples of Mudskipper from dominant spices periophthalmus waltoni for genetic study from Hendijan, Khore Zangi and Delvar. A specimen of fin was fixed in Ethanol alcohol (96%) and moved to Biotechnology lab in center study of Persian Golf in Bushehr. Total genomic DNA was extracted by proteinase-K digestion, phenol: chloroform: isoamyl alcohol extraction and ethanol precipitation. The quality and quantity of DNA was assessed using 1% agarose gel electrophoresis and spectrophotomeric method. Polymerase chain reactions (PCR) were conducted on the target DNA using 6 primers RAPD. PCR products were separated by electrophoresis on polyacrylamid gels (8%) that were stained using silver nitrate. Allele frequency, the effective and real allele, expected and observed heterozygosis, genetic diversity, Shannon Information index, Gst and gene based on analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) were calculated using the GENALEX and Pop Gene software. The average of Shannon index for Hendijan, Khore zangi and Delvar was respectively 0.3887, 0.2860 and 0.3509. Highest of Gst observed between Hendijan and Khore zangi (0.260) and lowest between Khore zangi and Delvar (0.195). Highest of gene flow (Nm) was observed between Delvar and Khore zangi (1.033) and lowest between Hendijan and Khore zangi (0.687). Highest of Genetic identity observed between Delvar and Khore zangi (0.924) but lowest was between Hendijan and Khore zangi community (0.833). Eventually this study show that three community of our research are separate and belong to two clusters.
