Notes: Abstract The F2 progeny of a cross between a chromosome 2 multiple marker stock and an adapted cultivar of barley were analyzed for four morphological markers and electrophoretic patterns of eight leaf isozymes. TheIdh-2 locus was linked to thePer-5 locus (27.96±5.07 cM) and to thee locus (10.26±3.13 cM). Also, thePer-5 ande loci were located on the short arm of chromosome 2. In additionIdh-2 was also located on barley chromosome 2 and was linked to thev locus (13.18±3.56 cM), which is located on the long arm of chromosome 2. Two other marker genes,li andwst,,B, were linked (26.50±5.24 cM) on chromosome 2 but segregate independently of the other loci evaluated.

Notes: Abstract Almond plants (Amygdalus communis L.) of the Garrigues variety were grown in the field drip irrigated and rainfed. Leaf water potential (Ψ) and leaf conductance (g1) were determined throughout one growing season. Pre-dawn measurement for Ψ in the irrigated treatment was consistent through the growing season, whereas in the rainfed treatment it decreased gradually. Ψ values at midday (Ψ minimum) was closely dependent on atmospheric evaporative demand, and their recovery was quicker in the wet treatment than in the dry. The g1 values were higher in the wet than dry treatments, decreasing in both cases by leaf ageing. Maximum values for g1 were reached when evaporative demand was highest in the day. The relationship between Ψ and g1 revealed a decrease in the hysteresis throughout the growing season, being most marked in the dry treatment. The results highlight the close dependence of Ψ and g1 on evaporative demand, leaf ageing and irrigtion treatment during the growing season.

Notes: Abstract Almond plants (Amygdalus communis L. cv. Garrigues) were grown in the field under drip irrigated and non irrigated conditions. Leaf water potential (Ψ) and leaf conductance (g1) were determined at three different times of the growing season (spring, summer and autumn). The relationships between Ψ and g1 in both treatments showed a continuous decrease of g1 as Ψ decreased in spring and summer. Data from the autumn presented a threshold value of Ψ (approx. −2.7 MPa in dry treatment, and approx. −1.4 MPa in wet treatment) below which leaf conductance remained constant.

Notes: The electronic properties of a one-dimensional diatomic crystal have been analyzed by using the MO-LCAO method in the tight binding approximation, with mathematical techniques involved in setting up and solving difference equations. The approach gives the exact sets of analytic solutions for both localized and nonlocalized states. The theory of surface states is developed as a characteristic value problem. To illustrate the method the surface states for a semiinfinite crystal which contains a local imperfection at the surface were examined. It appears that this method has advantages over previous methods developed to solve surface problems in crystalline lattices.

Description: The results of an effort to assess the existing knowledge and plan the required experimentation in the area of turbine blade tip excitation forces is summarized. The work was carried out in three phases. The first was a literature search and evaluation, which served to highlight the state of the art and to expose the need for an articulated theoretical experimental effort to provide not only design data, but also a rational framework for their extrapolation to new configurations and regimes. The second phase was a start in this direction, in which several of the explicit or implicit assumptions contained in the usual formulations of the Alford force effect were removed and a rigorous linearized flow analysis of the behavior of a nonsymmetric actuator disc was carried out. In the third phase a preliminary design of a turbine test facility that would be used to measure both the excitation forces themselves and the flow patterns responsible for them were conducted and do so over a realistic range of dimensionless parameters.
