    Notizen: The boundary-integral equation medthod is particularly well suited for solution of stress concentration and elastic fracture mechanics problems. The method was not previously applicable to anisotropic three dimensional problems because no efficient technique existed for calculation of the required point load solution for an infinite body. A technique has been developed to evaluate numerically the anisotropic point load soultions, and used to generate data bases for various materials. An intrpolation technique is used to evaluate the point load solutions efficiently within a higher order boundary-intgral equation code. The effectiveness of the technique is verified by solution of problems involving both uniaxial stress states and stress concentrations.

    Notizen: The boundary element method (BEM) has been known for some time to be extremely useful for the solution of elastic stress analysis problems involving high stress/strain gradients. In particular, the method has been extensively used for the study of both two and three-dimensional fracture mechanics problems. Recent analytical and numerical developments coupled with the general availability of greatly increased computing capacity have made both elastic and inelastic three-dimensional stress analysis feasible for complex geometries such as those found in gas turbine engine components.This paper summarizes the features of an advanced stress analysis method based on BEM for elastic and inelastic analyses of multizone or substructured three-dimensional solids. The elastic analyses involve isotropic or cross anisotropic media with thermal and centrifugal loading. The inelastic analyses include isotropic plasticity with variable hardening and kinematic plasticity with multiple yield surfaces.

    On angular momentum transfer in binary systems (1975)

    Beschreibung: The maximum limit for the conversion of orbital angular momentum into rotational angular momentum of the mass-gaining component in a close binary system is derived. It is shown that this conversion process does not seriously affect the rate of orbital period change and can be neglected in computing the mass transfer rate. Integration of this limit over the entire accretion process results in a value for the maximum accumulated rotational angular momentum that is 3 to 4 times larger than that implied by the observed underluminosity of stars in such systems as Mu(1) Sco, V Pup, SX Aur, and V356 Sgr. It is suggested that shell stars and emission-line stars in binary systems may be produced when the core angular momentum is transferred into an envelope having a rotational angular momentum close to the maximum limit.-

    Eclipses by an elliptical torus (1975)

    Beschreibung: A general procedure for computing the effects of eclipses by a torus, including both the outer horizon and the inner or hole horizon, was developed. The procedure can be used for any of the simple figures of revolution encountered in binary-star models. That is, the thickness can be made negligible to produce a thin ring, the hole radius can be set to zero to yield a thin disk, the radius to the center of the elliptical meridian section can be brought to zero to give an ellipsoid of revolution, or the equatorial axis of the elliptical meridian section can be made to equal zero to produce a section of a right circular cylinder.

    IUE observations of hot stars - HZ43, BD +75 deg 325, NGC 6826, SS Cygni, Eta Carinae (1978)

    Beschreibung: During the commissioning phase of IUE observations were made of a selection of hot stars: the white dwarf HZ43, the hot subdwarf BD +75 deg 325, the nucleus of the planetary nebula NGC 6826, the dwarf nova SS Cygni, and the peculiar object Eta Carinae. The observations were made in the low dispersion mode and the data have been reduced using a preliminary calibration. The results are presented and discussed for each object.

    Observation of the X-ray source Sco X-1 from Skylab (1977)

    Beschreibung: An attempt to observe the discrete X-ray source Sco X-1 on 20 September 1973 between 0856 and 0920 UT is reported. Data obtained with the ATM/S-056 X-ray event analyzer, in particular the flux observed with the 1.71 to 4.96 KeV counter, is analyzed. No photographic image of the source was obtained because Sco X-1 was outside the field of view of the X-ray telescope.

    Design, fabrication, and delivery of a charge injection device as a stellar tracking device (1979)

    Beschreibung: Six 128 x 128 CID imagers fabricated on bulk silicon and with thin polysilicon upper-level electrodes were tested in a star tracking mode. Noise and spectral response were measured as a function of temperature over the range of +25 C to -40 C. Noise at 0 C and below was less than 40 rms carriers/pixel for all devices at an effective noise bandwidth of 150 Hz. Quantum yield for all devices averaged 40% from 0.4 to 1.0 microns with no measurable temperature dependence. Extrapolating from these performance parameters to those of a large (400 x 400) array and accounting for design and processing improvements, indicates that the larger array would show a further improvement in noise performance -- on the order of 25 carriers. A preliminary evaluation of the projected performance of the 400 x 400 array and a representative set of star sensor requirements indicates that the CID has excellent potential as a stellar tracking device.
