Notes: Abstract Human chromosome 6 encodes both the interferon gamma receptor as well as the class I major histocompatability complex antigens, HLA-A, -B, and -C. However, the presence of chromosome 6 in somatic cell hybrids is insufficient to confer sensitivity to human interferon gamma (Hu-IFN-γ) as assayed by class I HLA induction; it is necessary for both human chromosomes 6 and 21 to reside in the hybrid to generate a response to Hu-IFN-γ. Treatment of such a hamster-human hybrid, Q72-18, with Hu-IFN-γ induces the class I HLA antigens. Q72-18 cells selected by fluorescence-activated cell sorting for the loss of class I HLA induction also lost human chromosome 21. Fusions of such cells to a hybrid that contains only human chromosome 21 reconstitutes HLA antigen induction by Hu-IFN-γ. Furthermore, fusions of hybrids containing a translocated human chromosome 6q and the HLA-B7 gene to a line containing only human chromosome 21 or a translocated 21q also reconstitutes HLA-B7 mRNA and antigen induction by Hu-IFN-γ. Thus the segregation of cells on the basis of a biological effect by fluorescence-activated cell sorting and reconstitution by hybrid fusion provides a strategy by which some biological pathways can be mapped at a chromosomal level.

Notes: Abstract DNA-mediated transfectants were isolated that expressed two of the cell-surface antigens encoded by human chromosome 11. These tranfectants were used to analyze monoclonal antibodies selected to recognize human cell-surface antigens expressed by a somatic cell hybrid containing 11 as its only human chromosome. Analysis of the transfectants, deletion hybrids, and mutants showed that the monoclonal antibodies recognized at least five different antigens, one of which we had not identified previously. A majority of the monoclonal antibodies recognized the a1 antigen. The use of cells from higher primates demonstrated that the a1 -specific monoclonal antibodies recognize at least two epitopes.

Notes: Abstract A new variant of the nonlocal light-cone expansion in QCD is proposed. The anomalous dimension of the corresponding fermion flavour nonsinglet operator is calculated in the one-loop approximation and shown to coincide (up to a trivial diagonal factor) with the Brodsky-Lepage kernel. The connection of our approach with the standard local conformal light-cone expansion is briefly discussed. An exclusive light-cone dominated process is considered within the framework of our formalism. The evolution equation obtained earlier by different methods is recovered in a particularly straightforward and compact manner.

Notes: Abstract U, B, V-observations, supplemented by spectrophotometric measurements of the symbiotic variable CH Cyg in the years 1982 to 1984 show that the star has reached its ‘blue maximum phase’ of its recent outburst in the first half of 1984. From end of July, 1984 on the object underwent a considerable drop in brightness and an increase of its colour indices, and which indicates that it was on the way to its cool phase. Also the spectroscopic observations show that the ‘blue’ continuum still observed at the beginning of July, 1984 has disappeared in October–November, 1984 and the strong absorption features, typical for a M-type giant were re-appearing. A remarkable intensity increase of the emission features, especially those of the Balmer lines, took place within this time interval. The rapid flickering variations of CH Cyg had also reached the culmination amplitude in July, 1984. There seem to be three periodicities present in these flickering variations with cycle lengths of 7.7 min, 21 min, and 60 min. Though these observational findings would be consistent with the M-type blue subdwarf component binary model with mass flow from the M6-III giant to the companion, the genuine binary nature of CH Cyg could not be established beyond doubt.

Notes: Abstract Beside some historical notes about the large Fraunhofer's heliometer used by Bessel and Argelander, some modern applications of the heliometer principle for the geometric and photometric autocalibration of detectors and the determination of absolute radial velocities with slitless field spectrographs are presented.

Notes: Abstract The discovery of magnetic field strengths in the range of 500 million Gauss in the objects Grw+70°8247 and PG1031+224 has given enormous impetus to investigations of magnetic white dwarf stars. We have determined intensities of Balmer transitions for B〉108 Gauss as a function of field and find strong oscillations of the transitions strengths, which are of importance to the quantitative analysis of the observed spectra and the interpretation of polarimetric measurements in these objects.

Notes: Abstract The application of a special version of the nonlocal light-cone expansion to hadron processes with large momentum transfer is reviewed. The light-cone operators introduced in this approach may be considered as the relevant hadron operators: Their matrix elements between the vacuum and a one-hadron state coincide with the quark distribution amplitude, and their anomalous dimensions are unique extensions of the well known Brodsky-Lepage evolution kernels having also a simple relation to the Altarelli-Parisi kernels.

Notes: Abstract The occultation of 136 Tau on May 11, 1988 was observed at the Observatorium Hoher List. The ingress was recorded photoelectrically by the dual beam photometer while the egress was observed visually. A bona fide curve fitting reduction yielded a scale height differing from earlier p.e. occultation results and is in better agreement with theoretical expectations.
