    Description: Two methods were investigated for retrieving the ball bearing signals buried by the overall signature of an operating large engine such as the main space shuttle engine. The signal averaging method averages n** signals over a time duration equaling the known period of the ball bearing defect frequency. With this method, the desired ball bearing defect signal will be enhanced over the noise by a factor of the square root of n. A second method is to perform a further frequency analysis on the logarithmic spectrum in order to detect and separate different families of harmonics and sidebands, thereby giving information about modulating frequencies. These two alternate IFD methods were carried out with a Norland 3001 waveform and data system. The obtained results are then compared with the power spectral density (PSD) of the overall machine signals and conclusions are made accordingly.

    Description: The cylindrical cavity resonator loaded with an anisotropic dielectric is analyzed as a two-dimensional problem using a finite element approach that assumes sinusoidal dependence in azimuth. This methodology allows the first finite element treatment of the technically important case of a resonator containing a sapphire element with a cylindrically aligned c axis. Second order trial functions together with quadrilateral elements are adopted in the calculations. The method was validated through comparisons with the analytical solutions for the hollow metal cavity and a coaxial cavity, as well as through measurements on a shielded sapphire resonator.

    Description: The implementation of a computer code CONE (for C(1) continuity) based on the p-version of the finite element method is described. A hierarchic family of triangular finite elements of degree p 5 is used. This family enforces C(1)-continuity across interelement boundaries, and the code is applicable to fourth order partial differential equations in two independent variables, in particular to the biharmonic equation. Applications to several benchmark problems in plate bending are presented. Sample results are examined and compared with theoretical predictions. In particular the analysis of the bending of a rhombic plate shows a significant improvement over othr published results.

    Description: A method for installing fragile, high temperature insulation batting in an elongated cavity or in a resilient wire sleeve to form a resilient seal. The batting is preformed to rough dimensions and wrapped in a plastic film, the film being of a material which is fugitive at a high temperature. The film is heat sealed and trimmed to form a snugly fit skin which overlaps at least at one end to permit attachment of a pull cord. The film absorbs the tensile force of pulling the film enclosed batting through the cavity or wire mesh sleeve and is subsequently driven off by high temperature baking, leaving only the insulation in the cavity or wire mesh sleeve.

    Description: Petrographic and chemical studies of the Qingzhen chondrite strongly suggest that it is the most highly unequilibrated (type 3) enstatite chondrite recognized so far. Qingzhen contains abundant, well-defined chondrules, some of which were incompletely molten during the chondrule formation process. The relict olivine grains within these chondrules contain dusty inclusions of almost pure metallic Fe, which appear to be the in situ reduction product of the fayalitic component of the olivine. The reduction process presumably took place at the time of chondrule formation and the chondrule precursor material must have been more oxidized than average enstatilite chondrite material. It is believed that this oxidized material may have formed at the enstatite chondrite formation location in the solar nebula, provided fluctuations in the degree of oxidation of the nebular gas existed at such locations. Reheating of this material under more reducing conditions would lead to the observed reduction of the olivine. Igneous olivines within chondrules always contain detectable amounts of CaO, while relict olivines are essentially CaO-free. This seems to suggest thatg the relict olivines did not originate during a previous igenous process of chondrule formation and might represent condensation products from the early solar nebula.

    Description: An evolution equation in the form of a modified Korteweg-de Vries equation is developed which describes the small-amplitude version of the infinitesimal rotational discontinuity (RD) studied by Wang and Sonnerup (1984). It is shown that the small-amplitude version of the equilibrium pulse solution obtained by Wang and Sonnerup is metastable and thus unlikely to arise spontaneously. When the initial pulse amplitude is smaller than and/or the initial pulse width is greater than the equilibrium value, the pulse decays. When the reverse is the case, the pulse is converted to an infinitesimal intermediate-mode solitary wave having greater pulse amplitude and speed. A simulation experiment is performed in which one of the equilibrium intermediate-mode solitary waves overtakes another, less rapidly moving version of the same wave. The existence of multipeaked intermediate-mode solitary pulses is demonstrated.
