Description / Table of Contents: NiH3IO6 · 6 H2O  -  Crystal Structures and Vibrational SpectraThe crystal structure of NiH3IO6 · 6 H2O has been determined by X-ray single-crystal diffraction (Pc, Z = 2, a = 516.74(9), b = 981.5(2), c = 1052.5(2) pm, β = 116.496(8)°) on the basis of 4169 unique reflections (R = 1.96%). The structure is built up of distorted Ni(H2O)62+ and H3IO62- octahedra linked by hydrogen bonding. IR and Raman spectra of both the title compound and isostructural MgH3IO6 · 6 H2O as well as of deuterated specimens are given. There are up to 14 different OH(OD) modes in the spectra of isotopically dilute samples due to the 15 different hydrogen positions of the structure. The internal modes of the meridional H3IO62- ions (pseudo C2v symmetry) are discussed with respect to that double T-shaped entity, which gives rise to only two instead of 3I—O, I—O(H), and OH stretches in the IR and Raman spectra, i.e. the same as for facial (C3v) structured ions.

Notes: A theory is described which guarantees an upper and lower bound estimate of the discretization error in numerical solutions of elliptic boundary value problems. This method gives bounded global estimates of the error in the energy norm. Pointwise estimates of the error in the solution variable or its derivatives can then be obtained if the numerical solution is exhibiting pointwise monotonic convergence. The versatility of this method is illustrated by its application to numerical solutions from finite element, finite difference and boundary element methods.

Notes: Presented in this paper is a finite element method for the analysis of nonlinear oscillations which exhibit periodic response. The basic idea of the method is to recast the initial value problem as a boundary value problem in which the domain (that is, period) may be unknown. We apply the method to study the free response of the conservative oscillator ü + mu + ∊f(u)=0, where m is either - 1, 0 or 1, f(u) is an odd nonlinear function, and ∊ need not be small. The harmonically forced case, ü + mu + ∊f(u) = Psin Ωt, is also considered, and it is shown that the superharmonic response can be efficiently calculated using this technique.

Notes: A simulation of power transformers following switching operations is presented in which each core section is represented by a non-linear inductance, the differential inductance being determined from the flux density in that section of the core. In analysing the resultant circuit model for the transformer it is shown that the circuit equations have dyadic properties which can be used to give a more efficient numerical solution.

Notes: In this paper, we have proved in theory that the sign of the current stiffness matrix provides a correct indicator for determining the sign of the loading parameter in the arc-length algorithm before the first bifurcation point is encountered, but may not be the case thereafter. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: The finite strip method is applied to the non-linear analysis of plate structures. Large deflection effects are included via first order non-linearities in the strain-displacement relations, and material non-linearities are included via the von Mises yield criterion and associated flow rule. The virtual work equations are integrated numerically using Gauss quadrature, and the resulting non-linear equations are solved by Newton-Raphson iteration. Numerical results are presented for many applications including uniformly loaded rectangular and I beams, and square plates with either simply supported or clamped ends (or edges). The results are compared with known results from analytical and/or finite element analyses. Finally, a uniformly loaded stiffened panel is analysed and the results are compared with finite element results. In all cases, the results indicate that a single bending mode in the strip direction is sufficient to yield engineering accuracy for design purposes.

Notes: A novel transmission-line model for the minority carrier transport through quasi-neutral arbitrarily doped layers is proposed. Based on detailed drift-diffusion equations, the novel TLEC includes the inductance that represents the influence of the relaxation-time term. Coupled with a object-orientated hybrid circuit simulator, the novel transmission-line model is implemented for the transient analysis of minority carrier transport. A substantial longer storage time of the minority carrier transient current at the collector end of ultra-narrow base is predicted owing to inclusion of the relaxation-time term.

Notes: Electrical double-layer effects are unimportant in flows through porous media except when the Debye length k-1 is comparable in magnitude with the pore radius a. Under these conditions the equations governing the flow of electrolyte are those of Stokes, Nernst-Planck and Poisson. These equations are non-linear and require numerical solution. The finite element method provides a useful basis for solution and various algorithms are investigated. The numerical stability and errors of each scheme are analysed together with the development of an appropriate finite element mesh. The electro-osmotic flow of a typical electrolyte (barium chloride) through a uniformly charged cylindrical membrane pore is investigated and the ion fluxes are post-computed from the numerical solutions. The ion flux is shown to be strongly dependent on both zeta potential and pore radius, ka, indicating the effects of overlapping electrical double layers.

Notes: In the computational simulation of fluid flow and scalar transport, multigrid iterative solution techniques often fail or stall when the discrete linearized equations have strongly anisotropic coefficients. In the present work, an adaptive agglomeration algorithm for forming coarse grids is presented that allows multigrid techniques to work efficiently for equation sets with anisotropic coefficients. The adaptive agglomeration is defined by two rules and several guidelines that follow from a physical interpretation of the performance of iterative solvers like Gauss-Seidel. The effectiveness of the adaptive agglomeration algorithm is demonstrated for a wide range of test cases. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: Numerical solutions are presented for the problem of steady laminar combined convection flows in vertical parallel plate ducts. Axial diffusion is neglected in the analysis and the resulting governing equations, which are of a parabolic nature, are expressed in an implicit finite difference scheme using a vorticity-stream function formulation and are solved using a marching technique. A constant wall temperature boundary condition is used and investigations are restricted to the case Pr = 0.72. A large range of values of the ratio Gr/Re is considered, -300 ≤ Gr/Re ≤ 70, and comparisons are made with the case of pure forced convection. For large values of the ratio |Gr/Re| reverse flow occurs in the duct. A modification to the standard marching technique is introduced and complete solutions are achieved for these situations for the first time. Results are presented in terms of velocity profiles, Nusselt numbers, friction factors and temperature distributions.
