Notes: Abstract Several practical approaches have been used to estimate the probabilities of rare events occurring in queueing processes. Rare events of practical interest can be considered as large deviations for a fixed queueing process (such as level crossing by the waiting time, or the queue length) or as those for a limiting triangular scheme. This paper is a survey of the literature devoted to the regenerative analysis of rare events. Because of the importance of busy period parameters, rare events within a busy period are discussed. A number of small parameter theorems useful in rare events analysis are outlined, including singular states aggregation theorems. Simulation methods for rare events analysis and other numerical methods are also presented.

Notes: Abstract The absolute concentration of atomic oxygen in an atmospheric pressure hydrogen/air flame has been measured using Intracavity Laser Spectroscopy (ICLS) based on a dye laser pumped by an argon-ion laser. Absorptions at the highly forbidden transitions at 630.030 nm and 636.380 nm were observed at an equivalent optical length of up to 10 km. The relatively low intensity of the dye laser avoids photochemical interferences that are inherent to some other methods for detecting atomic oxygen. The detection sensitivity is about 6 × 1014 atom/cm3 and can be improved with better flame and laser stabilization.

Notes: Abstract In mammary explants of lactating mice, changes in the intensity of chemiluminescence (CL) were observed after the addition to the incubation medium of hormones and mediators that are involved in the regulation of secretion: oxytocin, acetylcholine, epinephrine and norepinephrine. A 15-min period of treatment with oxytocin, epinephrine or norepinephrine changed the level of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS). Two mammary explants, one of which was treated with oxytocin, acetylcholine, epinephrine or norepinephrine, were found to interact even when separated by a quartz glass wall. Analysis of the level of TBARS formation in these two explants showed that the observed interactions might be connected with light emission resulting from lipid peroxidation (LP) processes. The possible role of LP and low-level CL in the regulation of mammary gland secretion is discussed.

Notes: Abstract In order to improve the generating and photochemical properties of coumarin laser dyes, the following active media were synthesized: inclusion complexes of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and 7-amino-4-methylcoumarins (COU1, COU102, COU120). Complex formation processes were studied, and the structure of the inclusion complexes was estimated using the method of MM2 molecular mechanics. The data obtained suggest the reasons underlying the complex structure effects on their spectral, luminescent and generating characteristics.

Notes: Abstract A proper description of the fibre fragmentation test becomes more and more important because of the continual development of new types of fibres, an example being the oxide composite fibres tested in the present work. An attempt at a strict formulation of the problem involved in the description of the fibre fragmentation test is presented. It takes into account a distortion of fibre strength distribution function caused by the fibre breakage process occurring under increasing external load. The fibre strength distribution function is determined by a distribution function of defects on a fibre as well as the distribution function of the defect strength. The formulation of the problem considered results in a system of differential equations which is solved assuming some simplifications. The solution leads to a choice of a particular set of statistical fibre strength characteristics. The procedure is applied to oxide composite fibres developed for a high temperature use.

Notes: Abstract By the spectrophotometric method in solvents of different natures a study was made of the kinetics of the homolytic breakage of the axial cobalt-carbon bond in five-coordinate complexes with dianionic tetradentate equatorial ligands. The negative values obtained for the activation entropies of the processes investigated are explained by the existence of interaction between the components of the primary radical pair and the solvent molecules. The kinetic parameters of the redox-interaction reactions of some macrocyclic complexes of cobalt(II) with chloroform and carbon tetrachloride were determined. A scheme in which the autocatalytic homolysis of the Co-CH 3 bond in the presence of chlorine-containing solvents is proposed.

Notes: Abstract An x-ray structural study of single crystals of 1-diphenylphosphinyl-cyclo-propane- and 1-diphenylphosphinylcyclobutanecarboxylic acids was conducted. 1-Phosphorylated cycloalkanecarboxylic acid amides were obtained from the corresponding acids by the reaction with thionyl chloride with subsequent treatment with primary and secondary amines. It was shown that the reaction of 1-phosphorylated 1-functional substituted cycloalkanes with trimethylbromosilane takes place with preservation of the cyclic structure and yields phosphoric acid silyl esters, and the corresponding cycloalkylphosphonic and cycloalkylphosphinic acids were synthesized by their hydrolysis in soft conditions.
