Description / Table of Contents: Route-Specific Challenges in the Delivery of Poorly Water-Soluble Drugs -- Optimizing the Formulation of Poorly Water-Soluble Drugs -- Solid-State Techniques for Improving Solubility -- Mechanical Particle-Size Reduction Techniques -- Co-solvent and Complexation Systems -- Injectable Formulations of Poorly Water-Soluble Drugs -- Lipid-Based Formulations -- Structured Development Approach for Amorphous Systems -- Melt Extrusion -- Spray-Drying Technology -- Pharmaceutical Cryogenic Technologies -- Precipitation Technologies for Nanoparticle Production -- Emerging Technologies to Increase the Bioavailability of Poorly Water-Soluble Drugs -- Scientific and Regulatory Considerations for Development and Commercialization of Poorly Water-Soluble Drugs.
Abstract: The objective of this third edition is to consolidate within a single text the most current knowledge, practical methods, and regulatory considerations pertaining to formulations development with poorly water-soluble molecules. A pharmaceutical scientist’s approach toward solubility enhancement of a poorly water-soluble molecule typically includes detailed characterization of the compound’s physiochemical properties, solid-state modifications, advanced formulation design, non-conventional process technologies, advanced analytical characterization, and specialized product performance analysis techniques. The scientist must also be aware of the unique regulatory considerations pertaining to the non-conventional approaches often utilized for poorly water-soluble drugs. One faced with the challenge of developing a drug product from a poorly soluble compound must possess at a minimum a working knowledge of each of the above mentioned facets and detailed knowledge of most. In light of the magnitude of the growing solubility problem to drug development, this is a significant burden especially when considering that knowledge in most of these areas is relatively new and continues to develop. Highlights the most recent advancements reported in the literature on technologies to improve the dissolution and bioavailability of poorly water soluble drugs Provides a comprehensive discussion of new technologies developed and recently over 40% updated new content Essential read for scientists and researchers in pharmaceutical, chemical, and agricultural industries since over 80% of newly discovered drugs are poorly water soluble.

Description: In contrast to large river plumes, Coriolis effects are weak, and inertia is quickly depleted so that the fate and structure of small‐scale plumes are more sensitive to tide and wind. Advected alongshore by reversing tidal currents in absence of wind forcing, small buoyant plumes are persistently deflected downwind in presence of alongshore winds and exhibit little tidal variability. The effect of different upwelling/downwelling winds on buoyant outflows ∼10 m3 s−1 is explored. With increasing wind, tidal variability decreases, as does asymmetry in plume characteristics—for strong winds upwelling/downwelling plume structure is similar as the plume is retained closer to the shore. Wind forcing is exerted directly by wind stress on the surface of the plume and indirectly by wind‐driven currents that deflect the upwind boundary of the plume. While inertia and buoyancy dominate the inner plume, and wind dominates the outer plume, the mid‐plume responds to an interaction of wind and buoyancy forcing that can be indexed by a Plume Wedderburn Number Wpl (wind stress vs. density gradients): for weaker winds (Wpl 〈 1) surface stress enhances stratification through straining, lengthening the reach of low‐salinity waters, whereas for stronger winds (Wpl 〉 1) surface stress mixes the plume vertically, shortening the reach of low‐salinity waters. However, dilute plume waters extend furthest in strong winds, passively advected several kilometers downwind. Shoreline exposure to outflow transitions from a quasi‐symmetrical tide‐averaged zone of impact under zero‐wind to a heavily skewed zone with persistent weak wind and a one‐sided zone for strong wind.
Description: Plain Language Summary: Compared to large river plumes, outflow from small rivers and mountainous streams is more sensitive to tides and winds because of the weak Coriolis effect and quickly reduced inertia. Alongshore (upwelling/downwelling) winds carry these small plumes in their direction. We use a numerical model to study the effect of these upwelling/downwelling winds on plumes spreading from small rivers with discharge rates of 10 m3 s−1 or less. Increasing wind reduces tidal fluctuations in plume patterns such that with strong winds the plume spreads similarly for upwelling and downwelling winds as it remains close to the shore. Wind affects the plume surface directly and the upwind‐plume boundary indirectly via wind‐driven currents. Inertia and buoyancy control the inner plume while wind and buoyancy control the mid‐plume and wind controls the outer plume. Weaker winds increase the plume length and layering by horizontally tilting the density gradients. Stronger winds shorten the plume by vertically mixing it. However, dilute plume waters extend furthest in strong winds, passively advected several kilometers downwind.
Description: Key Points: Plume bends downwind, with upstream boundary deflected by ambient current and downstream boundary deflected by surface wind stress. Asymmetry in plume shape between weak upwelling versus downwelling winds vanishes with strong winds that retain the plume nearshore where Ekman transport negligible. Inertia & buoyancy control the near‐field; wind forcing & buoyancy control the mid‐field; wind mixing & passive advection control the far‐field.

Description: Homicide has many social and psychological implications that vary from culture to culture and which change as people accept new ideas concerning guilt, responsibility, and the causes of crime. A study of attitudes toward homicide is therefore a method of examining social values in a specific setting. Homicide in American Fiction, 1798–1860 is the first book to contrast psychological assumptions of imaginative writers with certain social and intellectual currents in an attempt to integrate social attitudes toward such diverse subjects as human evil, moral responsibility, criminal insanity, social causes of crime, dueling, lynching, the "unwritten law" of a husband's revenge, and capital punishment. In addition to works of literary distinction by Cooper, Hawthorne, Irving, and Poe, among others, Davis considers a large body of cheap popular fiction generally ignored in previous studies of the literature of this period. This is an engrossing study of fiction as a reflection of and a commentary on social problems and as an influence shaping general beliefs and opinions.

Description: Originally published in 1975. This is a history of southern political life since the New Deal and World War II, encompassing a crucial epoch: an attempted Second Reconstruction of the South. The authors focus on the electoral response to candidates and issues. The authors contend that, despite the nationalizing and homogenizing forces that eroded much of the South's distinctiveness during the postwar years, the region's historical legacy perpetuated its distinctive patterns of cultural and political life. Further, the authors contend that despite the virtual destruction of the South's four inherited institutions of political sectionalism during the years of the Second Reconstruction—disenfranchisement, malapportionment, a one-party system, and de jure racial segregation—the new southern politics maintained a deep racial division that has militated against class coalitions, especially across racial lines, and has permitted government by relatively insulated elites.

Description: This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open Access programme and is available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. Narrative research has become a catchword in the social sciences today, promising new fields of inquiry and creative solutions to persistent problems. This book brings together ideas about narrative from a variety of contexts across the social sciences and synthesizes understandings of the field. Rather than focusing on theory, it examines how narrative research is conducted and applied. It operates as a practical introductory guide, basic enough for first-time researchers, but also as a window onto the more complex questions and difficulties that all researchers in this area face. The authors guide readers through current debates about how to obtain and analyse narrative data, about the nature of narrative, the place of the researcher, the limits of researcher interpretations, and the significance of narrative work in applied and in broader political contexts.

Description: The higher education landscape has arguably become one of the most arduous to traverse. More so in the African context, where a host of variables continiously challenge educators to reflect critically on their philosophies and practices as they engage an ever-changing audience. In this book, a critical engagement with theological education in Africa is offered. As the book originates from South Africa, it is presented as a South African perspective, although contributors are situated accross the African continent and abroad. The common denominator is that all contributers are, in some way or another, invested in theological education in Africa. The main contribution of this collaborative work is to be sought in the insights it offers on four main areas of theological education: A historical and current orientation on theological edcuation in Africa, some paradigm shifts in theological education in Africa, ministerial formation needs versus theological education challenges, and a critical reflection on elective models and methods. The book presents the original and innovative research of scholars for fellow scholars involved in theological higher education as it is grounded in the respective fields of interest of each contributor. It contributes to a better understanding of the complex African theological higher education landscape that is also mindful of post-COVID-19 realities. Methodologically the work draws on a combination of methods, including literature studies, empirical work, and in some cases sectional offerings from doctoral studies, as indicated in the various chapters.

Description: Psychedelically-enhanced psychotherapy (PAP) looks set to become a common remedy for a range of serious mental health problems. The market for providing PAP, including a secondary market for the training, credentialising and monitoring of therapists, is expanding rapidly. Concerns have been raised recently by actors in that secondary market about the potential for abuse in PAP, which have been framed in terms of a failure to respect patient autonomy. Such concerns cannot be adequately addressed without a fundamental reconsideration of the role of autonomy in psychotherapy. Discussing what autonomy means in psychotherapy and thence especially in PAP is the aim of this chapter, which starts from practitioner-focused guidance, before reflecting on the history of autonomy in geopolitics and ethics and finally returning to consider its place in psychotherapy generally and PAP specifically. The conclusion reached is that while protecting autonomy is the primary concern of medical ethics today, autonomy is not equal to the phenomenology of the psychedelic experience, which is better characterised in terms of ‘autoheteronomy’. The chapter’s contribution to the emerging ‘psychedelic humanities’ is to show that PAP brings to crisis longstanding cultural compromises and uncertainties around the way in which psychotherapy has been thought to foster patient autonomy.

Description: Relative Histories focuses on the Asian American memoir that specifically recounts the story of at least three generations of the same family. This form of auto/biography concentrates as much on other members of one’s family as on oneself, generally collapses the boundaries conventionally established between biography and autobiography, and in many cases—as Rocío G. Davis proposes for the auto/biographies of ethnic writers—crosses the frontier into history, promoting collective memory. Davis centers on how Asian American family memoirs expand the limits and function of life writing by reclaiming history and promoting community cohesion. She argues that identity is shaped by not only the stories we have been told, but also the stories we tell, making these narratives important examples of the ways we remember our family’s past and tell our community’s story. In the context of auto/biographical writing or filmmaking that explores specific ethnic experiences of diaspora, assimilation, and integration, this work considers two important aspects: These texts re-imagine the past by creating a work that exists both in history and as a historical document, making the creative process a form of re-enactment of the past itself. Each chapter centers on a thematic concern germane to the Asian American experience: the narrative of twentieth-century Asian wars and revolutions, which has become the subtext of a significant number of Asian American family memoirs (Pang-Mei Natasha Chang’s Bound Feet and Western Dress, May-lee and Winberg Chai’s The Girl from Purple Mountain, K. Connie Kang’s Home Was The Land of Morning Calm, Doung Van Mai Elliott’s The Sacred Willow); family experiences of travel and displacement within Asia in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, which unveil a history of multiple diasporas that are often elided after families immigrate to the United States (Helie Lee’s Still Life With Rice, Jael Silliman’s Jewish Portraits, Indian Frames, Mira Kamdar’s Motiba’s Tattoos); and the development of Chinatowns as family spaces (Maxine Hong Kingston’s China Men, Lisa See’s On Gold Mountain, Bruce Edward Hall’s Tea that Burns). The final chapter analyzes the discursive possibilities of the filmed family memoir (“family portrait documentary”), examining Lise Yasui’s A Family Gathering, Ruth Ozeki Lounsbury’s Halving the Bones, and Ann Marie Fleming’s The Magical Life of Long Tack Sam. Davis concludes the work with a metaliterary engagement with the history of her own Asian diasporic family as she demonstrates the profound interconnection between forms of life writing.

Description: The digital pdf of Chapter 9 is available Open Access under CC-BY-NC-ND licence. This collection brings together leading figures in the study of international relations to explore praxis as a perspective on international politics and law. With its focus on competent judgments, the praxis approach holds the promise to overcome the divide between knowing and acting that marks positivist international relations theory. Building on the transdisciplinary work of Friedrich Kratochwil, this book reveals the scope, limits and blind spots of praxis theorizing.
