    Notes: This paper examines individual trade policy preferences across 17 countries in Latin America. The focus is on whether skilled or unskilled workers are more likely to support liberalised trade and on whether country characteristics, such as factor endowments, alter the preferences of skilled and unskilled workers. Based on the standard Heckscher-Ohlin model and the Stolper-Samuelson theorem, wage inequality in developing countries will decrease under free trade and unskilled workers will benefit. We find that on average skilled workers are more likely than unskilled workers to support free trade in Latin American countries. Separate country regressions reveal that this pattern is only statistically significant in 8 out of 17 Latin American countries. However, there are no countries in our sample in which unskilled workers are statistically more likely to support free trade than skilled workers, not even in the lowest skill-endowed country in the sample. We also find that people from Latin American countries with higher GDP, faster growth, more cropland and a longer period of time since reform were more likely on average to support free trade.

    Notes: This study examined the effects of dietary vitamin C and ammonia concentration on the cellular defense response of Macrobrachium nipponese. The response of the cellular defense was determined by monitoring changes in reactive oxygen intermediates in hemocytes, superoxide dismutase activity, catalase activity, glutathione peroxidase activity, glutathione reductase and glutathione transferase activity in muscle. The results showed that prawns fed the basal diet had a significant increase in reactive oxygen intermediates in response to exposure to ammonia-N. When dietary vitamin C was added to the feed, there was a significant decrease in reactive oxygen intermediates in response to exposure to ammonia-N. Total superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activity of prawns fed the basal diet decreased as ammonia-N increased. This decrease in activity was significantly less pronounced in prawns that were fed the dietary vitamin C supplement. In prawns that were fed the dietary vitamin C supplement there was no significant variation in catalase reductase or gluxathione reductase activity in response to variations in ammonia-N concentration. The glutathione transference activity increased at a low concentration of ammonia-N in prawns that were fed the dietary vitamin C supplement, but there was no significant variation in the prawns fed the basal diet. Overall the results indicate that dietary vitamin C supplements enhance the capacity of M. nipponese to respond to elevations in ammonia-N. This response involved several biochemical reactions known to be involved in cellular defense.

    Notes: Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) and Gd-doped CeO2 (GDC) oxide impregnated Ni was investigated and developed as anodes of solid oxide fuel cells. Performance of the Ni anodes for the H2 oxidation reaction was substantially enhanced after the impregnation of submicrometer (100–300 nm) YSZ and GDC oxide particles. After impregnation of 1.7 mg/cm2 GDC (∼8.5 vol% GDC), the electrode polarization resistance dropped to 0.71 Ω·cm2 at 800°C, close to 0.24 Ω·cm2 reported on good Ni (50 vol%)/YSZ (50 vol%) cermet anodes at the same temperature. The results demonstrated that ion or wet impregnation is an effective process to introduce ionic conducting and catalytic active nano-sized YSZ and GDC phases into stable and porous Ni electronic network structure without the high temperature sintering process.

    Notes: Recently research shows that heterogeneous model is needed to explain some complex combustion behaviors in SHS. However, more heterogeneous details be considered more difficulties will be faced. A micro-heterogeneous & macro-homogeneous model is proposed in this paper based on some previous works for this problem. Combustion compact is divided into lots of little units, which are composed of a large number of small particles. Considering a well-mixed situation, properties of every unit must be almost the same, so the compact can betreated as a macro-homogeneous system on the scale of these little units. During the combustion, every unit will have a heterogeneous properties and change; it can be gotten by a micro-heterogeneous model. Therefore, the micro-heterogeneous characters are connected with the Marco-combustion behaviors. Combustion dynamics of Ti-C-Fe system was studied to certify this model. Results show well consistency with experiments results

    Notes: The oriented 0.67Pb (Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.33PbTiO3 (PMNT) polycrystals were prepared by the conventional ceramic technique and the templated grain growth method adding excess PbO in the matrix. Kinetics of the development of oriented structure was investigated systemically. In the presence of PbO liquid phase, the oriented PMNT polycrystals mainly grow by the dissolution-precipitation mechanism. The diffusion is determined by the sintering temperature and the PbO-excess content in the matrix. The thickness of oriented PMNT polycrystals displays a t1/3dependence, which is characteristic of diffusion-controlled growth. For the thicker oriented structure, 20% excess PbO in the PMNT matrix and 1150oC for 10h are the proper experimental conditions. Moreover, the addition of PbO in the matrix hardly affects the final composition of ceramic matrix

    Notes: Al2O3-30vol%ZrO2 nano-submicron structured ceramics has been obtained fromhigh-temperature melts produced by SHS metallurgical process, SEM images show that the multiphase ceramics is mainly composed of Al2O3 matrix eutecticums in which ZrO2 fibers are up to nano-submicron scale, resulting in formation of intra-granular structures. Vickers hardness test indicates that critical value of indentation load which induces median crack to extend is 30kg, and morphologies of Vickers indentation indicate that the ceramics is performed with high fracture toughness and high plasticity. Meanwhile, SEM images show that crack extension is mainlycontrolled by fiber eutecticums of intra-granular structures with nano–submicron ZrO2 phases, XRD demonstrates that toughening mechanism of stress induced ZrO2 phase transformation is considered weak through comparing volume fraction of m-ZrO2 before fracture to the one after fracture, and toughening behavior of multiphase ceramics is mainly controlled by nano-submicron phase toughening mechanism

    Notes: 1.5µm n-type modulation-doping InGaAsP/InGaAsP strained multiple quantum wellsgrown by low pressure metalorganic chemistry vapor decomposition technology is reported for the first time in the world. N-type modulation-doped lasers exhibit much lower threshold current densities than conventional lasers with undoped barrier layers. The lowest threshold current density we obtained was 1052.5 A/cm2 for 1000 µm long lasers with seven quantum wells. The estimated threshold current density for an infinite cavity length was 94.72A/cm2/well, reduced by 23.3%compared with undoped barrier lasers. The n-type modulation doping effects on the lasing characteristics in 1.5µm devices have been demonstrated

    Notes: Fibrosis caused by the host response to long-term transplanted microcapsules and the limitation of traditional L929 cell model for biocompatibility testing inspire the development of an assay of biocompatibility based on macrophage behavior. In this paper, the human monocytic cell line THP-1 was utilized for biocompatibility evaluation of microcapsule materials. The cell viability and secretion of nitric oxide (NO) and cytokines served as index of biocompatibility were assayed. It was found that the evaluated microcapsule materials had no effect on the stimulation of NO and cytokines secretion, which meant that these materials were biocompatible. Furthermore, it suggests the THP-1 cell a convenient in vitro experimental model that might be useful for long-term predictions of material biocompatibility

    Notes: Instent restenosis (ISR) has been a key factor that restricts the further use ofintraoronary stents. And the mechanical interaction between the stent and the artery has been indicated as one of the significant causes for the activation of stent-related restenosis. However, there is very little quantitative information about the interaction of stent with artery. In order to improve the general understanding of coronary stenting, finite element method (FEM) has been used to model the revascularization of a stenosed artery through the insertion of a balloon-expandable stent. Given a stent design, the deformed shape of the stent and possible areasof the artery injury were presented. The fact that the distal end of stent penetrated into the artery wall may help to explain the phenomena that much restenosis occurs at the ends of stents. The recoil ratios of the stent model, the plaque-artery model and the stent-plaque-artery model were 2%, 26.7% and11.3%, respectively. They were well consistent with the experimental data. In conclusion, this work would be helpful for the general understanding of intraoronary stent implantation and stent design optimization
