    Notes: The mass, heat, and momentum transfer through a rarefied gas confined between two coaxial rotating cylinders is studied. The evaporation and condensation of the gas on the cylinder surfaces is assumed. The state of equilibrium is perturbed by small deviations of pressure, temperature, and angular velocity on the inner cylinder. The S model of the Boltzmann equation has been solved numerically by the discrete velocity method. The fields of the pressure, temperature, velocity, heat flux vector, and shear stress are calculated in the wide range of the Knudsen number. Further, the Onsager reciprocity relations between the cross effects are verified. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Monte Carlo simulations of a model for γ-Fe2O3 (maghemite) single particle of spherical shape are presented aiming at the elucidation of the specific role played by the finite size and the surface on the anomalous magnetic behavior observed in small particle systems at low temperature. The influence of the finite-size effects on the equilibrium properties of extensive magnitudes, field coolings, and hysteresis loops is studied and compared to the results for periodic boundaries. It is shown that for the smallest sizes the thermal demagnetization of the surface completely dominates the magnetization while the behavior of the core is similar to that of the periodic boundary case, independently of D. The change in shape of the hysteresis loops with D demonstrates that the reversal mode is strongly influenced by the presence of broken links and disorder at the surface. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report pulsed emission from an optically pumped lead-salt vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser with a PbSe/PbSrSe quantum-well active region. The lasing wavelength of λ=4.44 μm is nearly constant over the temperature range 200–280 K, and the threshold is only 10.5 kW/cm2 at 260 K, where the gain peak and cavity mode are in resonance. Over 330 mW of peak power is emitted at 260 K, into a circular beam whose divergence angle increases with pump intensity. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: It is demonstrated that the suppression of parasitic Fabry–Perot-like lasing modes substantially enhances the beam quality and brightness of wide-stripe angled-grating distributed feedback lasers emitting in the midwave infrared. The direct facet-to-facet gain path is blocked by loss regions that are created by ion bombardment with 900 keV silicon ions. Both virtual mesa structures, in which loss regions bound both sides of the 300-μm-wide angled gain path, and spoiler structures, in which loss is induced only near the facets, decrease the etendue of the output by nearly an order of magnitude, and increase the brightness by up to a factor of 3. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have characterized the negative luminescent properties of photovoltaic HgCdTe detector structures with a room-temperature cutoff of 4.2 μm. Using an optical modulation method to directly measure the emittance as a function of applied bias and temperature, the blackbody signal at 295 K is found to be suppressed by a factor of 5.6. The negative luminescence efficiency of 82% and the apparent blackbody temperature change of (approximate)−35 K are nearly independent of heatsink temperature over the range 265–305 K. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report a photonic-crystal distributed-feedback (PCDFB) laser with an antimonide type-II "W" active region. Optical lithography and dry etching were used to pattern the two-dimensional rectangular lattice with a second-order grating tilted by 20° relative to the facet normal. For pulsed optical pumping, the emission line centered on λ=4.6–4.7 μm is considerably narrower (7–10 nm) than for Fabry-Pérot and angled-grating DFB (α-DFB) lasers fabricated from the same wafer. The PCDFB beam quality is also substantially enhanced, e.g., by a factor of 5 compared with the α-DFB at a pump-stripe width of 200 μm. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The intense 1Σu+←X1Σg+ electronic transition of the chains HC2nH (n=8–13) has been recorded in the gas phase using resonant two color two photon ionization spectroscopy. The gas phase frequencies lie ∼1300 cm−1 to the blue of the values in a neon matrix. These polyynes appear to be linear in both the ground and the excited state and, as for the polyynes, spectral and theoretical evidence for large bond alternation in the ground state is found indicating localized π orbitals on the C(Triple Bond)C units. These species are the longest carbon chains observed spectroscopically in the gas phase up to now. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We investigate the sensitivity of photoinitiated experiments to forward-scattering features by direct comparison of experimental angular distributions with quantum-mechanical calculations as well as by forward-convolution of theoretical and model center-of-mass differential cross sections. We find that the experimental sensitivity to forward-scattering angles depends on the instrumental velocity resolution as well as on the kinematics of the detected product channel. Explicit comparison is made between experimental HD(v′=1,2;j′) center-of-mass angular distributions at collision energies (approximate)1.6 eV (deduced from time-of-flight profiles using a single-laser, photolysis-probe approach) and quantum-mechanical calculations on the BKMP2 potential energy surface. The comparison takes into account the contributions from both slow and fast H atoms from the photolysis of HBr. We find that the contribution of the slow H atoms, which is the major source of experimental uncertainty, does not greatly affect the extraction of the angular distribution from the experimental time-of-flight profile for a specific HD(v′,j′) state. Except for HD(v′=1, j′=8) and HD(v′=2, j′=0), for which either slow H atoms or the presence of a narrow forward-scattering peak make the analysis more uncertain, the agreement between experiment and theoretical predictions is excellent. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Whether or not a company is able to compete in the local and global arena depends significantly on how effectively the company can build up the partnership synergy with their business counterparts. With the emergence of a dispersed manufacturing network, the important issue is the criteria for the selection of the right partners for the right tasks. In this respect, it is essential to develop the necessary techniques to measure the performance of potential business partners prior to making the decision of partner selection. This paper suggests a performance measurement technique incorporated with on-line analytical processing (OLAP) technology to support enterprise decisions related to selecting appropriate business partners. It also includes examples to illustrate how to apply this technique in real industrial situations.
