Notizen: Abstract —In the present study we compare results obtained from experimental estimates of local site amplification effects with those from numerical modelling using four different techniques. We benefit from an extremely precise knowledge of the near-surface structure and experimental estimates of the local amplification factors which are determined from seismic weak-motion data recorded by a dense array across a sedimentary basin at a European test-site in Northern Greece. The possibilities and limitations of the different modelling techniques (a 1-D technique, and three 2-D techniques) to model the effects of local amplification effects are tested. Amplifications calculated by the numerical techniques are only qualitatively compared with observed data from experimental studies in the time domain and directly in the frequency domain.¶As a result we conclude that, in the case of a complex subsurface geometry, 1-D modelling underestimates the amplification patterns in terms of absolute amplification level, and cannot correctly account for resonant frequencies, at least for modes higher than the fundamental mode. If a more realistic incident wave field than just a plane wave is taken into account, 2-D modelling reveals the fundamental frequency and shows adequate amplifications not only at the fundamental frequency but also at higher frequencies. The general trend of the amplifications at the lowest frequencies is well determined by the 2-D numerical modelling, and can therefore supply information for seismic risk analysis.

Notizen: Abstract  Major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes confer individual olfactory identity that can be detected with exquisite accuracy by mice. The fact that MHC genes themselves generate the characteristic odortype, rather than dedicated odor-determining genes, was supported in studies of point mutations in H2K and HLA transgenic mice, which evinced distinct odor profiles in olfactory assays. In this article we provide further evidence for a central role of MHC genes themselves in odortype specification by demonstrating that mice that are unable to express their genomic class I MHC genes because they lack β2-microglobulin are distinguishable by scent from otherwise identical mice which possess an intact B2m gene. This odortype disparity appears at 9–12 days of gestational age, the period in which the MHC is first detectable in fetal cells of normal mice.

Notizen: Abstract.  Quantitative analysis of particles less than 10 nm in diameter requires a focused electron beam to isolate individual particles for X-ray emission spectrometry. Effects such as phase separation among particles and surface segregation within particles can only be determined by this technique. This analysis can be made quantitative with minimal use of the usual correction factors provided the small particles are supported on ceramic materials about the same thickness as the particles themselves. Two alloy nanoparticle systems are examined here: Pt-Rh and Pt-Re. In each case the catalytic properties resulting from various processing procedures have been correlated with the microstructure within and among individual particles.

Notizen: Abstract.  We investigate the polymerization kinetics of rod-like polymer filaments interacting with a distribution of monomer in one spatial dimension (e.g. along a narrow tube). We consider a variety of possible cases, including competition by the filament tips for the available monomer, and behaviour analogous to “treadmilling” in which the polymer adds subunits to one end and loses them at the other end so as to maintain a constant length. Applications to biological polymers such as actin filaments and microtubules are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract Recent experimental evidence has implicated neurotrophic factors (NTs) in the competitive process believed to drive the development of ocular dominance (OD) columns. Application of excess amounts of particular NTs can prevent the segregation process, suggesting that they could be the substance for which geniculocortical afferents compete during development. We have previously presented a model that accounts for normal OD development as well as the prevention of that development with excess NT. The model uses a Hebbian learning rule in combination with competition for a limiting supply of cortical trophic factor to drive OD segregation, without any weight normalization procedures. Subsequent experimental evidence has further suggested that NTs may be causally involved in the competitive process. Application of NT antagonist can prevent OD columns by causing inputs from both eyes to be eliminated, suggesting that NTs may be the substance for which geniculocortical afferents compete. Also, excess NT can mitigate the shift to the open eye normally caused by monocular deprivation (MD). In this article, we show that the current model can account for these subsequent experiments. We show that deprivation of NT causes inputs from both eyes to decay and that excess NT can mitigate the shift to the open eye normally seen with MD. We then present predictions of the model concerning the effects of NT on the length of the critical period during which MD is effective. The model presents a novel mechanism for competition between neural populations inspired by particular biological evidence. It accounts for three specific experimental results, and provides several testable predictions.

Thema: Geologie und Paläontologie , Physik
Notizen: Abstract An assessment of uncertainties for ground motion predictions with the aid of the empirical Green's function (EGF) technique is presented. The main input parameters were identified, and their respective uncertainties were assessed by means of an international expert inquiry. The repercussion of these ‘input uncertainties’ on the final ground motion estimates were investigated by means of the Latin Hypercube Sampling technique. The mean ground motion estimates (response spectra) and their standard deviations were compared with results obtained from empirical ‘attenuation laws’. The most sensitive input parameter turned out to be the seismic moment corresponding to the EGF. In general, if the source parameters are well determined, equivalent uncertainties, statistically speaking, can be expected from the EGF technique and from the application of attenuation laws. Therefore, if EGFs with well known source parameters are available, the EGF technique seems to be preferable: site effects are automatically taken into account, and physically realistic acceleration time histories can be obtained. However, further investigations on the reliability of the EGF technique should be performed, and finally, it is recalled that the EGF technique is based on the assumption of linearity. If conditions are such that this assumption cannot be maintained, the EGF technique should be combined with non-linear geotechnical methods.

Thema: Geologie und Paläontologie , Physik
Notizen: Abstract Simple straightforward methods are applied to testtheir ability to detect the non-linear response of thesoil. Recordings of the main shock and aftershocks ofthe 1995, Hyogo-ken Nanbu (Kobe) earthquake are used.Non-linear effects are investigated using twodifferent techniques, on a collection of data for 12sites situated on different geological structures inthe Kobe and Osaka areas. The first method used is theso-called receiver functions technique (Langston,1979), which consists of computing the spectral ratiobetween horizontal and vertical components of motion. This ratio has been shown to reveal the fundamentalfrequency of a site (Lachet and Bard, 1994; Lachet etal., 1996; Theodulidis et al., 1995, 1996). For eachsite, recordings of the main shock and a set ofaftershocks are considered. The variation of thisspectral ratio for different values of the maximumacceleration recorded at a site is investigated. Bothvariations of the amplitude of the H/V ratio (due tonon-linear behavior, on the horizontal components inparticular) and of the frequency position of theamplified band-width are observed. The secondtechnique used in this study is related to thevariation of the high frequency content of therecordings during the main-shock and its aftershocks. The high frequency spectral decay of the motion, characterized by κ parameter, is assumed to berelated mainly to the near-surface attenuation. Itshould then increase with increasing peak velocity, incase of non-linearity. The value of kappa iscalculated for the 12 sites in the Kobe area, fordifferent types of soil conditions, and againdifferent values of peak ground acceleration.Variations of kappa are then related to non-linearbehavior of the soil during the Kobe earthquake.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper, the irregular operations problem is approached for the first time in a way that allows an airline to provide for schedule recovery with minimal deviations from the original aircraft routings. A network model with side constraints is presented in which delays and cancellations are used to deal with aircraft shortages in a way that ensures a significant portion of the original aircraft routings remain intact. The model is flexible, allowing user preferences in the objective, and thereby reflecting the immediate concerns of the decision-maker in the recovery schedule. The model can be tailored by airline operations personnel to emphasize differing solution characteristics. Fleet data provided by Continental Airlines are used to demonstrate the approach. Extensive testing indicates that optimal or near-optimal solutions are routinely obtained from the LP relaxation of the network formulation. When integrality is not achieved, a rounding heuristic is provided that finds feasible solutions within a small fraction of the optimum.
