Notes: Summary Nest defence is a frequent and widespread parental behaviour which enhances brood survival. We have found that in a Spanish Magpie population which is heavily parasitized by the brood parasitic Great Spotted Cuckoo, Magpies defend (1) unparasitized more frequently than parasitized nests, and (2) at the end of the nestling period more frequently than in other stages of the breeding cycle. Great Spotted Cuckoos are brood parasites, which means that their eggs are incubated and their nestlings are raised by members of a host species. Brood parasites are not thought to take care of their own offspring. However, we have found that Great Spotted Cuckoos sometimes scolded us on our regular visits to parasitized magpie nests (but never on those to unparasitized nests). Frequency of nest defence by cuckoos differed significantly among years, being significantly higher at the beginning of the study. Although sporadic observations of adult brood parasites feeding juveniles have been recorded, nest defence has not previously been suggested for any brood parasite.

Notes: Abstract   Misophrioid copepods are reported for the first time from Antarctic waters. A species of each of the genera Misophriopsis and Misophriella is described from hyperbenthic layers of the continental shelf of the eastern Weddell Sea. The genus Misophria is also reported from these waters. Misophriopsis australis sp. nov. is the fifth representative of this widely distributed genus, previously reported from the North Atlantic, the China Sea, and both NW and NE quadrants of the Pacific Ocean. Misophriella schminkei sp. nov. is the second representative of the genus, known to date only from a single female caught in North Atlantic bathyal depths. Traces of subdivisions on antennary exopodal segments of the latter species suggest that the first segment may be a triple segment, while the second and terminal segments may be double segments. In addition, the mandibular exopod of this taxon indicates that a six-segmented ramus with setal formula 0, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2 may represent the ground pattern in Copepoda. The presence of parts of a cyclopinid copepod in the gut of M. schminkei sp. nov. indicates that this species may be carnivorous.

Notes: Abstract Two overall parameters are proposed to characterize the degree of polarization and its uniformity across the transversal section of non-uniformly partially polarized beams. Such parameters can be measured according to the well-known standard methods used to obtain the Stokes parameters, with the addition of a CCD camera to determine the beam intensity at each point of the observation plane.

Notes: Abstract The stability of indium chloride and oxide as well as the electrochemical behaviour of indium ions have been studied in the equimolar CaCl2–NaCl melt at 550 ∘C by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and different electrochemical techniques, using molybdenum and tungsten wires as working electrodes. Voltammetric and chronopotentiometric studies showed signals attributed to the presence of three oxidation states of indium, i.e. 0, i and iii. The standard potential of the redox couples, as well as the solubility products of indium oxides have been determined, showing that In(iii) ions are completely reduced to monovalent indium by the indium metal according to the reaction: In (Ш) + 2 In ↔ 3 In () and that In2O is a strong oxide donor according to the reaction: In2O(s)→ 2 In() + O2- These results have allowed the construction of E-pO2− equilibrium diagrams summarising the properties of In–O compounds. The electrodeposition of indium was uncomplicated at Mo and W electrodes. Very good adherence of liquid indium to the electrode materials was observed, with the formation of Na–In alloys at highly reducing potentials, and there was no evidence of indium dissolution into the melt. Moreover, the voltammograms corresponding to the electrochemical In(iii)/In(i) exchange were well defined. The two electrochemical steps were found to be quasi-reversible, and the values of the kinetic parameters, ko and α, for both reactions, as well as the diffusion coefficients, DIn(III) and DIn(I) were calculated.

Notes: Abstract The planar isosceles three-body problem where the two symmetric bodies have small masses is considered as a perturbation of the Kepler problem. We prove that the circular orbits can be continued to saddle orbits of the Isosceles problem. This continuation is not possible in the elliptic case. Their perturbed orbits tend to a continued circular one or approach a triple collision. The basic tool used is the study of the Poincaré maps associated with the periodic solutions.

Notes: Abstract Within Archimedean ℓ-groups, and with α an infinite cardinal or ∞, we consider X-hulls where X stands for any of the following classes of ℓ-groups: α-projectable; laterally α-complete; boundedly laterally α-complete; conditionally α-complete; combinations of the preceding, together with divisibility and/or relative uniform completeness. All these hulls exist, and may be obtained by iterated adjunction of the required extra elements, within the essential hull. When the ℓ-groups is relatively α-complemented one step in the iteration suffices for several crucial properties. We derive from the above a considerable number of equations involving combinations of these hull operators.

Notes: Abstract. An interpretation of the cold fission events in thermal-neutron-induced fission of heavy nuclei is given. The descent from the saddle point is considered as a dynamical process with reversible coupling between collective and intrinsic degrees of freedom. The distribution function for the collective variables is expressed as a product of two terms: the adiabatical and the dynamical factors. A simple model for symmetric fission to study the mass distribution is presented. As example, the calculations are performed for the nucleus 264Fm. Gross features of the cold fission are discussed as well as the dependence of the theoretical mass distribution on the parameters of the model.

Notes: Abstract: A measurement of the 56Ni cosmic ray abundance has been discussed as a possible tool to determine the acceleration time scale of relativistic particles in cosmic rays. This conjecture will depend on the halflife of totally ionized 56Ni which can only decay by higher-order forbidden transitions. We have calculated this halflife within large-scale shell model calculations and find t 1/2≈ 4×104 years, only slightly larger than the currently available experimental lower limit, but too short for 56Ni to serve as a cosmic ray chronometer.

Notes: Abstract. The short-term effects of leptin and a β3-adrenoceptor agonist on thermogenesis and expression of uncoupling proteins (UCPs) in brown adipose tissue (BAT) and muscle and their possible interactions were assessed. One hour after administration of the β3-adrenoceptor agonist Trecadrine, a statistically significant increase in UCP1 messenger RNA (mRNA) expression in BAT was observed, whereas UCP2 and UCP3 in both BAT and gastrocnemius muscle were unaffected. Leptin induced an upregulation of UCP3 mRNA in muscle, with no changes in BAT UCP1 mRNA. A statistical interaction was found between leptin and Trecadrine in rectal temperature. The present study provides evidence, for the first time, of the induction of UCP3 mRNA expression in skeletal muscle by leptin in nongenetically obese animals.
