    Notes: Recent radio-frequency heating experiments on the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [Hawryluk et al., Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion 33, 1509 (1991)] have focused on developing tools for both pressure and current profile control in deuterium–tritium (DT) plasmas. A new antenna was added to investigate pressure profile control utilizing direct ion Bernstein wave (IBW) heating. This was the first time direct IBW heating was explored on TFTR. Plasma heating and driven poloidal flows are observed. Previously heating and current drive via mode-converted IBW waves had been demonstrated in non-DT plasmas but efforts in DT plasmas had been unsuccessful. This lack of success had been ascribed to the presence of a small 7Li minority ion population. In the most recent experiments 6Li was used exclusively for machine conditioning and mode-conversion heating consistent with theory is now observed in DT plasmas. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Operating a laser diode in an extended cavity which provides frequency-selective feedback is a very effective method of reducing the laser's linewidth and improving its tunability. We have developed an extremely simple laser of this type, built from inexpensive commercial components with only a few minor modifications. A 780 nm laser built to this design has an output power of 80 mW, a linewidth of 350 kHz, and it has been continuously locked to a Doppler-free rubidium transition for several days. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In examining a supply of supposedly amorphous, high-purity, boron powder, a significant proportion of the particles were found to be well crystallized. Examination of these crystalline particles by convergent-beam electron diffraction revealed that they were orthorhombic with space group Pnma (a = 16.7, b = 17.7, c = 10.3 Å). Contaminating impurities are thought to be responsible for the formation of this crystal structure but the authors were unable to identify them by analytical transmission electron microscopy. Some remarkable electron diffraction effects resulted from the dense reciprocal lattice of Bragg reflection and these are described. Noncrystalline particles in the powder were, in fact, found to be quasicrystalline in nature with planar disorder.

    Notes: Abstract The facilities layout problem is concerned with a given number of facilities of somesystem which are to be laid out in a plane region such as a factory floor or a flat buildingsite. The problem has applications, beyond manufacturing, in the design of various types ofgovernment and other public facilities, as well as of buildings for commercial activities.The aim of the classical facilities layout problem is to produce a plan drawn to scale whichshows the relative positions of the facilities to be laid out in order to optimise some measureof the performance of the system. We assume that the region P, in which the facilities are tobe laid out, is a rectangle of integer dimensions and that each of the facilities to be laid outin it is to be a connected subregion of given area, of arbitrary shape, whose boundaries areparallel to the perimeter of P. In many practical layout scenarios, there are regions in whichit is forbidden to locate facilities. This sometimes occurs when a factory is to be redesignedand certain existing facilities are to remain where they are. In other scenarios, the forbiddenregions represent areas which cannot contain any facilities at all, e.g., for security, transport,technical, or other reasons. We devise integer programming models for the facilities layoutproblem with forbidden areas. As a result, we believe that the approaches described representa useful addition to the facilities planner's toolkit.

    Notes: Abstract The pattern of settlement over time of three broadcast spawning coral species (Cyphastrea serailia, Acanthastrea lordhowensis, and Goniastrea australensis) from the Solitary Islands (30°00′S; 153°20′E) was studied in 1995 and 1996 in order to determine the maximum length of time these larvae could remain in the water column and still retain the ability to settle and metamorphose. Larvae were maintained in aquaria and the number which had settled on biologically-conditioned tile pairs was monitored every 5 to 10 d. While the majority of larvae settled quickly after becoming competent, some larvae survived and settled for extended periods after spawning. Competency periods ranged from 26 d for C. serailia to 56 d for G. australensis and 78 d for A. lordhowensis. These data greatly extend the known competency periods for larvae of broadcast-spawning corals and indicate the potential for transport of broadcast-spawned coral larvae over large distances. Medium to long-distance larval dispersal of the species studied provides a mechanism for their widespread distribution in subtropical regions, on reefs which are often widely spaced and relatively isolated.

    Notes: Abstract Thin-film plasma polymer coatings were deposited on to titanium, stainless steel and 70/30 copper-nickel substrates from hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) as potential permanent promoters of dropwise condensation of steam. Long-term durability condensation tests showed that HMDSO films on titanium exposed to low-velocity steam performed well with some lifetimes in excess of 12 000 h. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to monitor the dependence of chemical composition of the films on the deposition conditions and it was shown that composition was not critically dependent on deposition conditions. Additionally, XPS was used to monitor chemical composition before and after exposure of specimens to steam in an attempt to identify the failure mechanisms for films which had ceased to sustain dropwise condensation over their entire surface. Furthermore, short tube sections were coated with plasma-polymerized HMDSO and exposed to steam at elevated velocities. In this case the durability was poor and this is attributed to water droplet impingement erosion on the tube surfaces. This was confirmed by a subsequent test where no water droplets were present in the steam flow and the coating lifetime was seen to increase.

    Notes: Abstract  Pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R.Br.] is a warm-season grass used for food, feed, fodder and forage, primarily in countries of Africa and India but grown around the world. The two most-destructive diseases to pearl millet in the United States are rust (caused by Puccinia substriata var. indica) and pyricularia leaf spot (caused by Pyricularia grisea). Genes for disease resistance to both pathogens have been transferred into agronomically acceptable forage and grain cultivars. A study was undertaken to identify molecular markers for three rust loci and one pyricularia resistance locus. Three segregating populations were screened for RAPDs using random decamer primers and for RFLPs using a core set of probes detecting single-copy markers on the pearl millet map. The rust resistance gene Rr 1 from the pearl millet subspecies P. glaucum ssp. monodii was linked 8.5 cM from the RAPD OP-G8350. The linkage of two RFLP markers, Xpsm108 (15.5 cM) and Xpsm174 (17.7 cM), placed the Rr 1 gene on linkage-group 3 of the pearl millet map. Rust resistance genes from both Tift 89D2 and ICMP 83506 were placed on linkage-group 4 by determining genetic linkage to the RFLP marker Xpsm716 (4.9 and 0.0 cM, respectively). Resistance in ICMP 83506 was also linked to the RFLP marker Xpsm306 (10.0 cM), while resistance in Tift 89D2 was linked to RAPD markers OP-K19350 (8.8 cM) and OP-O8350 (19.6 cM). Fragments from OP-K19 and OP-O8 in the ICMP 83506 population, and Xpsm306 in the Tift 89D2 population, were monomorphic. Only one RAPD marker (OP-D11700, 5.6 cM) was linked to pyricularia leaf spot resistance. Attempts to detect polymorphisms with rice RFLP probes linked to rice blast resistance (Pyricularia oryzae; syn=P. grisea) were unsuccessful.

    Notes: Abstract Indices of shallow rootedness and fractal methods of root system study were combined with sapflow monitoring to determine whether these ‘short-cut’ methods could be used to predict tree competition with crops and complementarity of below ground resource use in an agroforestry trial in semi-arid Kenya. These methods were applied to Grevillea robusta Cunn., Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) Walp., Melia volkensii Gürke and Senna spectabilis syn. Cassia spectabilis aged two and four years which were grown in simultaneous linear agroforestry plots with maize as the crop species. Indices of competition (shallow rootedness) differed substantially according to tree age and did not accurately predict tree:crop competition in plots containing trees aged four years. Predicted competition by trees on crops was improved by multiplying the sum of proximal diameters squared for shallow roots by diameter at breast height2, thus taking tree size into account. Fractal methods for the quantification of total length of tree root systems worked well with the permanent structural root system of trees but seriously underestimated the length of fine roots (less than 2 mm diameter). Sap flow measurements of individual roots showed that as expected, deep tap roots provided most of the water used by the trees during the dry season. Following rainfall, substantial water uptake by shallow lateral roots occurred more or less immediately, suggesting that existing roots were functioning in the recently wetted soil and that there was no need for new fine roots to be produced to enable water uptake following rainfall.

    Notes: Abstract The objective of this research was to design an extraction media and procedure that would selectively remove uranium without adversely affecting the soils' physicochemical characteristics or generating secondary waste forms difficult to manage or dispose of. Investigations centered around determining the best lixiviant and how the various factors such as pH, time, and temperature influenced extraction efficiency. Other factors investigated included the influence of attrition scrubbing, the effect of oxidants and reductants, and the recycling of lixiviants. Experimental data obtained at the bench-and pilot-scale levels indicated 80% to 95% of the uranium could be removed from the uranium-contaminated soils by using a carbonate lixiviant. The best treatment was three successive extractions with 0.25M carbonate-bicarbonate (in presence of KMnO4 as an oxidant) at 40°C followed with two water rinses.

    Notes: A valine-overproducing mutant (MA7040, Streptomyces hygroscopicus) was found to produce 1.5 to 2.0 g/L of the immunoregulant, L-683,590, at the 0.6 m3 fermentation scale in a simple batch process using soybean oil and ammonium sulfate-based GYG5 medium. Levels of both lower (L-683,795) and higher (HH1 and HH2) undesirable homolog levels were controlled adequately. This batch process was utilized to produce broth economically at the 19 m3 fermentation scale. Material of acceptable purity was obtained without the multiple pure crystallizations previously required for an earlier culture, MA6678, requiring valine supplementation for impurity control.Investigations at the 0.6 m3 fermentation scale were conducted, varying agitation, pH, initial soybean oil/ammonium sulfate charges, and initial aeration rate to further improve growth and productivity. Mid-cycle ammonia levels and lipase activity appeared to have an important role. Using mid-cycle soybean oil additions, a titer of 2.3 g/L of L-683,590 was obtained, while titers reached 2.7 g/L using mid-cycle soybean oil and ammonium sulfate additions. Both higher and lower homolog levels remained acceptable during this fed-batch process. Optimal timing of mid-cycle oil and ammonium sulfate additions was considered a critical factor to further titer improvements. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Biotechnol Bioeng 60: 580-588, 1998.
