    Notizen: AlN layers were grown on Si(111) substrates by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. Crystal quality was assessed by atomic force microscopy and high resolution x-ray diffraction. The III/V ratio and the growth temperature, rather than thickness and growth rate, are found to be critical parameters to achieve good quality AlN layers. III/V ratios close to stoichiometry, and high growth temperatures (≥900 °C) lead to optimal AlN layers. The growth rate is barely modified when growth temperature changes from 780 to 920 °C, but the growth mode and surface roughness are strongly affected. Optimal AlN layers have full-widths at half-maximum values of 10 arcmin, and an average surface roughness of 48 Å. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: GaN photoconductive detectors have been fabricated on sapphire substrates by metal organic vapor phase epitaxy and gas-source molecular beam epitaxy on Si (111) substrates. The photodetectors showed high photoconductor gains, a very nonlinear response with illuminating power, and an intrinsic nonexponential photoconductance recovery process. A novel photoconductor gain mechanism is proposed to explain such results, based on a modulation of the conductive volume of the layer. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Limited previous experience with the mean value total dressing (MVTD) method had shown that MVTD energies for closed shell systems are generally better than CCSD(T) ones compared to FCI. The method, previously published as total dressing 2′(td-2′), is based on the single reference intermediate Hamiltonian theory. It is not a CC method but deals in a great part with the same physical effects that CC methods that incorporate amplitudes of triples such as CCSDT or its CCSDT-1n approaches. A number of test calculations comparing to diverse CC methods, as well as FCI and experiment when available, have been performed. The tests concern equilibrium energies in NH3 and CH2, equilibrium energies and distances in some diatomics (BF, NO+, CN+, C2, BeO), different bond breaking situations (H2O, BH, HF, SiH2) and spectroscopic properties of different bonding conditions (Li2, LiNa, LiBe+, NeH+, and O3). The results are in general closer to the full CCSDT ones in the equilibrium regions and close to CCSDT-1 along most dissociation curves. A few exceptions to this rule are analyzed with the help of an approach to MVTD that does not take into account the effects of linked quadriexcitations. Such analysis suggests the interest of improving the treatment of effects of linked triples in the MVTD model. The separate contributions of linked and unlinked triples and quadruples are also analyzed for some of the above diatomics representing different behaviors of bond breaking. The interest of such analysis is illustrated in the NeH+ molecule. The MVTD results show, in general, a high quality, provided that the nature of the correlation problem does not become largely multiconfigurational, as occurs in multiple bond dissociation or in the asymmetric stretching of ozone. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Among the x-ray fluorescence techniques using energy dispersive systems, the excitation in the total reflection regime is becoming widespread. This technique may be applied to surface analysis if the fluorescent radiation emitted by the sample is measured as a function of the grazing incidence angle. The main limitation in performing this sort of analysis is the need to use a monochromator, which notably reduces the incident flux of radiation. Besides, the method requires the radiated surface to be perfectly smooth and polished and to have a total length of some centimeters. A similar technique known as grazing exit x-ray fluorescence presents certain advantages and is easier to implement. By this method, fluorescent photons in terms of the grazing exit angle are detected. In this work, a spectrometer for performing surface analysis at grazing exit is described, the different experimental situations are analyzed, and some measurements performed with this device are shown. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Data from the diagnostics on the TJ-II device will be collected by several independent systems linked to local area networks (LANs). Some of these systems will consist of digitizers based on well-known standards: CAMAC, VME, VXI, etc. Other allowable systems would be personal computers or workstations with direct control over a specific diagnostic. In principal, any equipment capable of being linked in a LAN can be used as a controller for data collection. All systems will be programmed from a central computer. In this computer, an application program will allow the set up of data acquisition in any system. This will be achieved by communicating systems through a network standard protocol: TCP/IP. The central computer will also centralize the database of discharges. For this purpose, immediately after a discharge, data will be sent from the autonomous systems to the main computer. The latter will coordinate data reception, organize discharge information, and compress data. Data will be transferred rapidly so all diagnostic signals will be available to users for immediate analysis. The computer processes outlined here will provide an application program to provide users with an interface for all operations related to data acquisition, fast signal analysis, and remote control of diagnostics. A second functionality will be the management of TJ-II discharge database. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The analysis of turbulence requires adequate analysis tools. In particular, two general properties of turbulence make the application of standard analysis tools (spectral analysis) difficult: (1) intermittency, which causes the characteristics of turbulence to change on a relatively short time scale, implies that analysis tools must not integrate over time scales longer than the intermittent time scale; (2) nonlinearity, a basic property of all numerical models of chaos and turbulence, requires specially adapted tools for its proper detection. In the present work, we develop a statistically stable formalism for the application of wavelet analysis techniques to the analysis of turbulence. We apply these techniques to the analysis of Langmuir probe data in the plasma edge region of the TJ-IU Torsatron. We draw some tentative conclusions about radial correlation lengths. Further, we analyze the L/H transition at the Continous Current Tokamak and reconstruct a radial profile of bicoherence in the plasma edge in the H-mode. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: An experimental setup to measure "in situ" the amount of H that a Pd cathode absorbs during the electrolysis of aqueous solutions has been built up and tested. The setup implements a volumetric technique, i.e., it involves the measurement of the rate of H2 generation by the cathode. The pros and cons of this type of techniques against other procedures, the measurement of the variation of the cathode electrical resistance or of its dilation during the electrolysis, are briefly discussed. A careful analysis of the setup error sources is done by using two non-H-absorbing Pt electrodes. Neither any significant recombination of the electrolysis gases (H2 and O2), nor any deviation of a 100% electrolysis efficiency have been observed. It has been found that gas (air) release and H2 and O2 absorption by the solution, in the first stage of the electrolysis, seriously affect the measurement of the rate of H absorption by the cathode. Several improvements of the experimental installation and an operation protocol of saturation of H2 and O2 and of exhaustion of air in the solution, before starting the electrolysis, allowed overcoming those limitations. Finally, we present the results obtained in the measurement of the rate of H uptake by a Pd cathode during electrolysis. The reliability of the measurement has been confirmed by electrochemically deloading the Pd cathode. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A study about induced anisotropy by hydrogen charging has been performed in both, positive and negative magnetostrictive amorphous alloys. A strong perpendicular to surface anisotropy at the sample surface in every hydrogenated sample has been observed from Bitter pattern and from hysteresis loops obtained by magnetooptical Kerr effect. This perpendicular anisotropy is only in the volume fraction near to sample surface, as it is inferred from hysteresis loops and magnetization curves measured by induction. A model assuming that the large perpendicular induced anisotropy is due to the mechanical stresses produced by the change of volume of the hydrogenated zones has been developed. From this model, by fitting experimental results, anisotropy energy, internal stresses, and hydrogen charged volume have been calculated. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A dynamical magnetic susceptibility study on La1−xSrxCoO3 samples obtained by a coprecipitation method is reported for x≤0.30. For x〈0.20 differences between zero field cooled and field cooled dc magnetic susceptibility appear at a temperature Ta below the Curie point, TC(approximate)240 K, as well as a magnetic freezing point at a temperature Tb〈Ta. Alternating current magnetic susceptibility shows two maxima at these temperatures, which is interpreted as the evidence of different interaction processes between ferromagnetic clusters mediated by a matrix of changing spin-state Co3+ ions. For x≥0.20 an unique blocking process seems to take place due to the percolation of the ferromagnetic clusters, making unimportant the contribution of the matrix. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
