    Notes: Abstract The circumpolar nudibranch Tritoniella belli Eliot occurs in abundance in shallow-water benthic communities of McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. Density estimates based on belt transects averaged collectively 0.46 individuals m−2 at three study sites between depths of 6 and 30 m in November 1996. At two of the sites, population densities increased linearly between 18 and 30 m depth (up to 0.7 and 1.15 individuals m−2 at 30 m depth). Individuals at all sites were rare or absent at depths shallower than 12 m. Size frequencies of individuals at the sites were similar, and a pooled analysis revealed a unimodal distribution skewed highly towards juvenile size classes. This suggests both recent recruitment and constant rates of mortality across size classes. The relationship between foot length and wet weight best fits an exponential growth equation, indicative of an allometric growth pattern. Distribution of T. belli in the field suggests that it is a habitat and diet generalist. Potential invertebrate predators include sea anemones and seastars, both of which co-occur in abundance in McMurdo Sound. Laboratory experiments indicate that the sea anemone Isotealia antarctica can capture and ingest T. belli. However, 70% of T. belli that are captured escape from the tentacles or, following ingestion, are rejected from the gastrovascular cavity. The seastars Odontaster validus, Perknaster fuscus, and Acodontaster conspicuus, avoid contact with T. belli, but if forced into contact with mantle tissues, retract their tube-feet. Mucus secreted from the mantle tissues, coated on to the tips of glass rods, and presented to seastar tube-feet, causes significantly longer tube-foot retraction times than control rods. Moreover, pieces of freeze-dried krill coated with mantle mucus are consumed significantly less often than untreated control pieces of krill by a benthic scavenging fish (Pseudotrematomas bernacchi). Employing seastar tube-foot retractions as a bioassay, we found the bioactive compound(s) are soluble in ethyl acetate, indicating they are lipophilic or moderately hydrophilic in nature. Chemical defenses in the mucus of T. belli probably contribute to its high abundance in Antarctic benthic communities.

    Notes: Abstract Dense populations of the antarctic pteropod Clione antarctica (Smith) offer a rich source of potential nutrients and energy to planktivorous predators. Nonetheless, antarctic fish do not prey on C. antarctica. Employing flash and high-pressure liquid chromatographic techniques, a linear β-hydroxyketone, pteroenone (C14H24O2) was isolated from whole tissues of C. antarctica. When embedded in alginate food pellets at ecologically relevant concentrations, pteroenone caused significant feeding deterrence in Pagothenia borchgrevinki and Pseudotrematomas bernacchii, two antarctic fish known to feed on planktonic organisms. Concentrations of pteroenone were variable between pteropods (0.056 to 4.5 mg ml-1 tissue), but even those individuals with the lowest natural concentration contained levels five-fold greater than the lowest effective feeding-deterrent concentration (0.012 mg ml-1 alginate). Chemical analysis indicated that the primary dietary item of the carnivorous C. antarctica, the shelled pteropod Limacina helicina, does not contain pteroenone. This suggests that C. antarctica does not derive this defensive compound from its diet. This is the first example of a defensive secondary metabolite in a pelagic gastropod.

    Notes: Abstract An empirical expression for the full energy peak efficiency (ε) in terms of the gamma-ray energy (E) and the vertical distance from the detector surface (z) (i.e.,ε=ε(z,E)) has been obtained for an N-type high purity germanium (HPGE) detector using an extended mixed standard radionuclide solution. Comparison of the calculated efficiencies and the experimentally measured values for the energy range of 59.5–1332.5 keV and a source-to-detector distance of 1.2–7.2 cm showed that the theoretical values agree with that of the experiment within 1.5–3.7% standard deviations. This shows a good agreement between the theory and the experiment.

    Notes: Abstract Cat gene expression has been investigated following PEG-mediated plasmid uptake into barley protoplasts. The uptake conditions optimised for transient expression were employed for stable transformation. Transformed protoplast-derived calli of the cvs. Dissa and Igri, were selected on medium containing G418 at 40 μg ml−1 or kanamycin sulphate at 250 μg ml−1. Absolute transformation frequencies of 28.9×10−5 and 21.3×10−5 were recorded for Dissa with kanamycin sulphate and G418 selection, respectively. The frequency for Igri was 11.5×10−5 with G418 selection. Antibiotic resistant protoplast-derived colonies expressed NPTII activity; Southern hybridisation confirmed integration of the nptII gene into barley genomic DNA.

    Notes: Abstract On 7 and 8 March 1996, the SOHO spacecraft and several other space- and ground-based observatories cooperated in the most comprehensive observation to date of solar polar plumes. Based on simultaneous data from five instruments, we describe the morphology of the plumes observed over the south pole of the Sun during the SOHO observing campaign. Individual plumes have been characterized from the photosphere to approximately 15 R⊙ yielding a coherent portrait of the features for more quantitative future studies. The observed plumes arise from small (∼ 2-5 arc sec diameter) quiescent, unipolar magnetic flux concentrations, on chromospheric network cell boundaries. They are denser and cooler than the surrounding coronal hole through which they extend, and are seen clearly in both Feix and Fexii emission lines, indicating an ionization temperature between 1.0–1.5 x 106 K. The plumes initially expand rapidly with altitude, to a diameter of 20–30 Mm about 30 Mm off the surface. Above 1.2 R⊙ plumes are observed in white light (as ‘coronal rays’) and extend to above 12 R⊙. They grow superradially throughout their observed height, increasing their subtended solid angle (relative to disk center) by a factor of ∼10 between 1.05 R⊙ and 4–5 R⊙ and by a total factor of 20–40 between 1.05 R⊙ and 12 R⊙. On spatial scales larger than 10 arc sec, plume structure in the lower corona (R 〈 1.3 R⊙) is observed to be steady-state for periods of at least 24 hours; however, on spatial scales smaller than 10 arc sec, plume XUV intensities vary by 10–20% (after background subtraction) on a time scale of a few minutes.

    Notes: Abstract Si3N4 matrix composites reinforced with pyrolytic carbon pre-coated Hi-Nicalon (SiC) fibers, were studied using tensile testing and transmission electron microscopy. Three types of samples were evaluated all with a nominal coating thickness of 200 nm. The composites were densified by hot pressing at 1550 °C (type I and II) and at 1600 °C (type III). The fibers were coated with pyrolytic carbon via CVD with identical (sample I) and opposite (samples II and III) directions of the gas flow and of the fiber movement through the reactor. Tensile testing indicated for the three sample types respectively: brittle behaviour with huge pull out of the fibers, pseudo-plastic behaviour and brittle behaviour with little pull out. TEM indicated for the three sample types debonding typically at the fiber/coating interface, at the coating/matrix interface and in the coating, respectively. The relation between processing, structure, particularly of the coating and its interfaces with the matrix and the fibers and mechanical properties is addressed.

    Notes: Abstract The deafness mouse has profound sensorineural hearing loss with degeneration of hair cells soon after birth. The mode of inheritance is recessive, and there are no associated phenotypic anomalies. Thus, this mouse provides a model for recessive, nonsyndromic, prelingual deafness. We have mapped the gene causing deafness in the mouse to Chromosome (Chr) 19 by analysis of 230 intersubspecific backcross progeny. No recombinants were found with the microsatellite marker D19Mit14. The loci for two guanine nucleotide-binding proteins are tightly linked to this marker, and they are being investigated as possible candidate genes. The identification of the defective gene in the mouse will help to explain the mechanism that causes hair cell degeneration and is likely to identify a homologous gene for deafness in humans.

    Notes: Abstract Eight seaweed species were sampled for a two year period from June 1996 to August 1998 along the coast of Ghana which is being washed by the gulf of Guinea (part of the Atlantic ocean). An analysis was made of the levels of fourteen chemical elements namely: Al, As, Au, Ca, Cd, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Hg, V and Zn by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). Apart from As, Au, Cd, Fe, and Hg the elements were measured in all the seaweed species studied. Al, Ca, K, Mg, and Na generally showed the highest concentrations in most of the species analysed while the Hg content was low. The results showed high variability in and between species, among sampling sites and times of collection. The high values of metal concentration in the macroalgae suggest that these marine organisms can be used as biological indicators for studying marine pollution.
