Notes: Thomson scattering was used to measure the Langmuir wave spectrum driven by stimulated Raman scattering. The Thomson scattering signals measured in the experiment showed Langmuir waves with components both parallel and antiparallel to the incident laser's wave vector, k0. The parallel component was attributed to stimulated Raman scattering. However, the Langmuir waves with components antiparallel to k0, which cannot be explained by stimulated Raman scattering, were attributed to the Langmuir decay instability (LDI). The relative amplitude of the two Langmuir wave features and their angular width supported the conclusion that the Langmuir waves traveling antiparallel to the incident laser's wave vector were driven by the Langmuir decay instability. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: It has been recently proposed that, for highly turbulent discharges, there exists a consistent density profile for the trapped electrons in a high aspect ratio circular cross-section tokamak, which has a radial variation proportional to 1/q(r), where q is the usual safety factor. It is shown here that this result can be extended to include passing electrons and noncircular cross-section moderate aspect ratio tokamaks. This new prediction for the density profile is compared to the time evolution of the measured electron density profile in low confinement mode (L-mode) shots in the tokamak known as DIII-D [L. Luxon et al., Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research, 1986 (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1987), Vol. I. p. 159], where the q profile is changed in time during the discharge. Once an expression for the consistent density profile is known, it is trivial to obtain an expression for Vp/D, where Vp is the particle pinch velocity and D is the particle diffusion coefficient. This expression is compared with the value of Vp/D, which is obtained from an analysis, utilizing the ONETWO transport code [R. Dominguez and R. Waltz, Nucl. Fusion 27, 65 (1987)], of certain high confinement mode (H-mode) DIII-D discharges, which are free from edge localized modes. The dependence of density on q can be extended to a dependence of temperature on q through the adiabatic relation. The dependence of temperature on q can then predict one type of cold pulse propagation phenomena. By way of introduction, a simple analogy with a dynamic incompressible fluid system is made.

Notes: The article presents the design and the first results of a new eight camera, soft x-ray (SXR) and bolometric tomography which has been installed in RFX, a large (R=2 m, a=0.46 m), high current reverse field pinch experiment operating in Padova. The main features of the diagnostic, which has been designed with standards compatible with the requirements of large fusion experiments, are: (a) it allows simultaneous reconstruction of both SXR and total radiation emissivity structures with high spatial and time resolution (bandwidth up to 200 kHz for SXR and 10 kHz for bolometry). Moreover, computer controlled remote actions which interchange up to five material filters in front of the detectors allow the exploration of different energy ranges; (b) it can be easily decoupled from the machine without breaking the main vacuum and can be operated during first wall baking up to 300 °C thanks to a cooling circuit; (c) the detection chain is designed to measure very low signals [in the order of 1 nA for SXR diodes and of 100 μV for bolometers]; (d) it is equipped with a VME based 1 MHz data acquisition system which allows on-line processing of a large amount of data. To accomplish these features the diagnostic consists of eight fully remotely controlled manipulators which can insert eight photocameras, carrying 78 top-rated Si SXR and 48 miniaturized metal film bolometric detectors in their operating positions. Initial results are presented. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The distribution of the single substitutional nitrogen impurity (NS0) through the thickness of diamond films grown by chemical vapor deposition has been studied using Electron Paramagnetic Resonance imaging. The design of an Electron Paramagnetic Resonance imaging probe is described. With this probe we have measured mean bulk concentrations down to a few parts per billion carbon atoms or equivalently ∼1014 cm−3 in diamond samples with dimensions 4.5×10×0.5 mm and achieved a through film spatial resolution of the NS0 distribution of 20 μm. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: High-resistivity unintentionally-doped In0.49Ga0.51P lattice matched to GaAs has been grown via low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition at a reduced growth temperature. These layers have excellent surface quality and are single crystal. The resistivity increases exponentially as the growth temperature is decreased from 550 to 490 °C, resulting in a resistivity of ∼109 Ω cm for samples grown at 490 °C. In addition, the photoluminescence intensity decreases exponentially for growth temperatures below 550 °C, indicating an increase in nonradiative recombination related to an increasing trap concentration. For samples grown at 550 °C, constant capacitance deep level transient spectroscopy measurements show a strong broad peak at ∼200 °K with an ionization energy of 0.40±0.04 eV, verifying the presence of an electron trap. The gummel plot and I–V characteristics of an InGaP/GaAs heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) with a 2000-Å-thick InGaP buffer layer grown at 500 °C are identical to that of an HBT grown without the InGaP buffer layer, indicating that the semi-insulating InGaP layer is compatible with GaAs-based device epitaxy. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The use of the iron chelator deferiprone (L, CP20, 1,2-dimethyl-3-hydroxypyrid-4-one) for the treatment of diseases of iron overload and other disorders is problematic and requires further evaluation. In this study the efficacy, toxicity and mechanism of action of orally administered L were investigated in the guinea pig using the carbonyl iron model of iron overload. In an acute trial, depletion of liver non-heme iron in drug-treated guinea pigs (normal iron status) was maximal (approximately 50% of control) after a single oral dose of L1 of 200 mg kg, suggesting a limited chelatable pool in normal tissue. There was no apparent toxicity up to 600 mg kg. In each of two sub-acute trials, normal and iron-loaded animals were fed L (300 mg kg day) or placebo for six days. Final mortalities were 12/20 (L) and 0/20 (placebo). Symptoms included weakness, weight loss and eye discharge. Iron-loaded as well as normal guinea pigs were affected, indicating that at this drug level iron loading was not protective. In a chronic trial guinea pigs received L (50 mg kg day) or placebo for six days per week over eight months. Liver non-heme iron was reduced in animals iron-loaded prior to the trial. The increase in a wave latency (electroretinogram), the foci of hepatic, myocardial and musculo-skeletal necrosis, and the decrease in white blood cells in the drug-treated/normal diet group even at the low dose of 50 mg kg day suggests that L may be unsuitable for the treatment of diseases which do not involve Fe overload. However, the low level of pathology in animals treated with iron prior to the trial suggests that even a small degree of iron overload (two-fold after eight months) is protective at this drug level. We conclude that the relationship between drug dose and iron status is critical in avoiding toxicity and must be monitored rigorously as cellular iron is depleted.

Notes: Abstract Addition of (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate (Z11-16:Ac) into a normally attractive binary blend of Heliothis virescens pheromone components resulted in a suppression of upwind flight and source location by males. Male response was reduced even at the lowest dosages of Z11-16:Ac tested but upwind flight and source location were most clearly reduced when the loading of Z11-16:Ac reached 10% or more of the (Z)-11-hexadecenal (Z11-16:Ald) loading (the major component present in the binary blend). Similar patterns of suppression in response were noted when Z11-16:Ac was added to binary blends of pheromone components at both 10 and 100 μg loadings of Z11-16:Ald. Males in casting flight following upwind flight in a mechanically generated pulsed plume, responded to the interception of a subsequent, single binary-blend filament by making a toward-source upwind surge. Responses of males to a single filament that was tainted by a level of Z11-16:Ac that had allowed some reduced level of upwind flight and source location to occur in the previous plume experiments were diminished compared with their control counterparts. Analysis of the flight tracks revealed that the surges in response to single tainted filaments were stunted because males made fewer significant changes in course angles steered, airspeeds generated, and in the tempo of counterturns executed.
