Notes: High quality epitaxial SrS:Eu,Sm thin films have been deposited on (111) and (001) BaF2, (001) Gd3Ga5O12, and (001) MgO oriented substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) in vacuum and H2S partial pressures. Structural evaluation of the SrS films showed them to be highly oriented along the (001) direction when deposited on (001) BaF2 or (001) MgO substrates, with a rocking angle full width half-maximum (FWHM) of about 0.5° for the SrS (002) peak on both substrates. The φ scans of the (111) SrS peak of these films indicated a high degree of in-plane epitaxy as well, with no signs of high angle grain boundaries. For the films grown on MgO substrates, the infrared stimulated luminescence was measured as a function of deposition temperature and found to depend on the film's degree of crystallinity. These results indicate that PLD is a viable technique for the growth of highly epitaxial photoluminescent SrS:Eu,Sm thin films. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Working for Patients (1989), implemented in 1991, introduced into the National Health Service (NHS) the purchaser-provider split, which created an "internal market" for health care. The key feature of this internal market was the concept of buying and selling of health services, with competition between provider units for the "business" of purchasers. Turning to industry where buying and selling has always been normal practice between organizations, this paper looks at a strategy that may help provider units to survive in this new marketplace. An examination of buyer-supplier relationships focuses on the specific organizational strategy of relationship marketing as a potential way forward.

Notes: Benchmarking is a continuous process of comparing and measuring an organization's business processes against those of business leaders anywhere in the world. Attempts to benchmark internal auditing in Australia, Malaysia and Hong Kong. Bases the analysis on surveys undertaken in all three countries. The surveys of both chief executives and internal audit managers establish benchmarks for international comparisons of internal audit practice. A number of issues were addressed by the surveys including attitudes and recognition, professionalism, role and scope, career opportunities, education and training and the future role of internal audit. The comparison provides useful insights into the internal audit profession in Australia, Malaysia and Hong Kong.

Notes: High-resolution X-ray diffraction data to dmin = 1.31 Å were collected on a Xuong-Hamlin area detector from crystals of the blue-copper protein amicyanin, isolated from P. denitrificans. With coordinates from the earlier 2.0 Å structure determination as a starting point, simulated annealing and restrained positional and temperature factor refinements using the program X-PLOR resulted in a final R factor of 15.5%, based on 21 131 unique reflections in the range 8.0–1.3 Å. Comparison of the 1.31 Å structure with that at 2.0 Å shows the same basic features. However, the high-resolution electron-density maps clearly reveal additional solvent molecules and significant discrete disorder in protein side chains and within the solvent structure. As a consequence of modelling side-chain disorder, several new hydrogen-bonding interactions were identified.

Notes: The structure of bovine liver cytochrome b5, a soluble 93-residue proteolytic fragment of a 16 kDa membrane-bound hemoprotein, initially solved at 2.0 Å resolution, has been refined at 1.5 Å using data collected on a diffractometer. Refinement to 2.0 Å resolution used the Hendrickson-Konnert procedure PROLSQ and was then extended to 1.5 Å resolution using the program PROFFT. Only residues 3–87 could be identified in the model and these residues together with 93 water molecules gave an agreement factor of R = 0.161 for data in the resolution range 1.5–5 Å. The structure was finally refined using the program X-PLOR, which enabled alternate conformers to be modelled for several surface side chains. Residues 1 and 2 at the amino terminus of the protein and residue 88 near the carboxyl terminus could be identified from these electron-density maps. However the remaining disordered carboxy-terminal residues could not successfully be included in the model. A total of 117 solvent molecules were included in the final refinement to give R = 0.164 for the data between 1.5 and 10 Å.

Notes: Abstract. Environmental concentrations and biological effects of certain metals and organic compounds found in wood preservatives were examined. The study focused on leachates from private residential docks in South Carolina tidal creeks. Copper, chromium, arsenic, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in composite samples of surficial sediments and naturally occurring oyster populations (Crassostrea virginica) from creeks with high densities of docks, and from nearby reference creeks with no docks. In some cases, metal concentrations in sediments and oysters were higher immediately adjacent to dock pilings than they were elsewhere in the same creek. Sediments from most sites had concentrations of metals and total PAHs which were below levels reported to cause biological effects, however. Solid-phase Microtox® bioassays using whole sediments and rotifer bioassays using sediment pore water showed no significant differences in acute toxicity between creeks with and without docks. Oysters growing directly on dock pilings had significantly higher concentrations of copper than oysters growing at least 10 m away; however, there was no significant difference in the physiological condition of these oysters. Four-day field bioassays measuring percent survival of mummichogs (Fundulus heteroclitus), mud snails (Ilyanassa obsoleta), juvenile red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus), and juvenile white shrimp (Penaeus setiferus) showed no significant differences between sites near to and distant from newly constructed docks. Hatchery-reared oysters showed no significant differences between dock and reference sites in percent survival, growth, or bioaccumulation of metals after six weeks of exposure. The results suggest that, in estuarine environments with a moderate tidal range (1.5–2.0 m), wood preservative leachates from dock pilings have no acutely toxic effects on four common estuarine species, nor do they affect the short-term survival or growth of juvenile oysters.

Notes: Observes that the use of personal characteristics in job advertisements is discouraged within the prescriptive literature. Examines the extent to which advertisers for personnel specialists apply them in practice, and the range of characteristics put to use. Findings show that 80 per cent of advertisements contain reference to at least one personal characteristic. Concludes that social skills, particularly communication, appear to be the most important characteristic of personnel specialists, but there is, nevertheless, variation between differing job areas. Concludes that, although advertisers seem to follow stereotypes when putting together advertisements, they do not make particularly good use of personal characteristics.

Notes: [Auszug] The X-ray structure of the homotetrameric lysosomal acid hydrolase, human β-glucuronidase (332,000 Mr), has been determined at 2.6 Å resolution. The tetramer has approximate dihedral symmetry and each protomer consists of three structural domains with topologies similar to a jelly roll ...
