    Notes: We demonstrate that scanning transmission electron beam induced conductivity can be used to image the recombination activity of an orthogonal 〈110〉 misfit dislocation array within a relaxed Si/Si1−xGex/Si(001) heterostructure on the submicrometer scale. Correlation with structural images suggests that an array of bunched dissociated 60° misfit dislocations is primarily responsible for the electrical activity in this instance. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract  In the nunataks of the Prince of Wales Mountains the tholeiite flood basalts of the East Greenland Tertiary Province are unconformably overlain by alkaline lavas. The majority of the alkaline lavas are strongly porphyritic picrites, ankaramites and hawaiites. These rocks have lower 143Nd/144Nd and higher 87Sr/86Sr than the tholeiitic flood basalts and are isotopically akin to ocean island basalts. The alkaline lavas also have high concentrations of incompatible elements which on normalised plots have a pattern which is similar in shape to that of enriched oceanic island basalts. The isotopic and chemical characteristics of these late-stage representatives of the East Greenland volcanic activity are attributed to their derivation from the peripheral regions of the East Greenland plume, the axial region of which was moving progressively eastwards relative to the westwards drift of the Greenland plate. It is proposed that the incompatible element contents of the magmas so produced were dominated by small degree melts formed beneath a cap of continental lithosphere in the marginal regions of the plume.

    Notes: Abstract We examined the competitiveness of five effective Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar phaseoli strains in the nodulation of kidney beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), either alone or in pairwise combination, against the indigenous strains. The results showed that the introduced Rhizobium sp. strains (B2, B17, B36, T2, or CIAT 652) occupying 64–79% of the total nodules (as single inocula) were more competitive in nodulation than the native rhizobia. However, the competitiveness of the individual Rhizobium sp. strain either increased or decreased when used in a pairwise combination of double-strain inocula. For example, strain B17, although quite competitive against the indigenous population (68% nodule occupancy), became poorly competitive in the presence of strain B2 (reduced from 68 to 2.5%). A similar reduction in nodule occupancy by strain B17 was observed in the presence of B36 or CIAT 652, indicating that two competitive strains may not always be compatible. These results suggest that it is important to co-select competitive as well as compatible rhizobia for multistrain inoculant formulation.

    Notes: Abstract Isothermal calorimetry was performed on intimate mixtures of CaHPO4·2H2O and Ca4(PO4)2O constituted at Ca/P molar ratios of 1.50 and 1.67 to form the hydroxyapatite compositions Ca9HPO4(PO4)5OH and Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, respectively, at complete reaction. The temperature range investigated was 15–70°C. The effects of the reaction temperature on the rates of heat evolution during hydroxyapatite formation were determined. Reactions were carried out utilizing a liquid-to-solids weight ratio of 1.0. A two-stage reaction mechanism was observed regardless of the Ca/P ratio as indicated by the presence of two reaction peaks in the plots of the rates of heat evolution against time. An Arrhenius relationship was found between the rate and temperature for each reaction stage for both compositions. Apparent activation energies of 120 and 90 kJ/mol (Ca/P=1.67) and 118 and 83 kJ/mol (Ca/P=1.50), respectively, were calculated for the first and second reaction peaks. An Arrhenius relationship was also found between the time of maximum rate and temperature. The following qualitative reaction mechanism is proposed for each of the two reaction stages for both compositions studied. The first stage involves the complete consumption of CaHPO4·2H2O and the partial consumption of Ca4(PO4)2O to form a noncrystalline calcium phosphate and nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite. During the second stage the remaining Ca4(PO4)2O reacts with the noncrystalline calcium phosphate to form the final product, stoichiometric or calcium deficient hydroxyapatite.

    Notes: The present study was undertaken to investigate the low temperature formation of a hydroxyapatite-polyphosphazene polymer composite likely to be biocompatible. The temperature range studied (25 to 60°C) was selected to bracket physiological temperatures. The composite precursors consisted of CaHPO4·2H2O, Ca4(PO4)2O, and poly[bis(sodium carboxylatophenoxy)phosphazene]. The results indicate that a synergistic relationship exists in the formation of a polyphosphazene network and hydroxyapatite (HAp) matrix phase during composite synthesis. Calcium from the HAp precursors participates in the formation of a Ca crosslinked polymeric network which influences the rate of HAp formation and its morphology. The mechanistic paths taken during composite formation were followed by determining variations in the concentration of species in solution (at physiological temperature), rates of heat evolution, and microstructural development. These analyses indicate that the polymer controls the kinetics of hydroxyapatite formation and the composite microstructure. Low reaction temperatures and a high proportion of polymer facilitate the formation of a highly interconnected composite. The presence of the polyphosphazene allows a metastable calcium phosphate solution to persist for extended periods prior to the formation of hydroxyapatite. The degree of supersaturation and the length of the induction period increase with an increase in polyphosphazene content. The temperature dependence of these induction periods obeyed an Arrhenius relationship.

    Notes: Abstract Enzymatic hydrolysis of glucosinolates, a class of compounds found in Brassica species, results in a number of products with potential to inhibit seed germination. To investigate the impact of both volatile and water-soluble allelochemicals, germination bioassays using Lactuca sativa seeds were conducted with root and combined leaf and stem tissues of Brassica napus. Tissues in which glucosinolates were hydrolyzed to remove volatile glucosinolate degradation products were compared with intact tissues and water controls. Only tissues containing glucosinolates produced volatiles that inhibited germination. Volatiles were trapped and identified using GC-MS. Volatiles produced in greater quanitity from intact tissues than from tissues without glucosinolates were almost exclusively glucosinolate hydrolysis products. Water-soluble components also inhibited germination. Chemical analysis of extracts confirmed the presence of glucosinolate hydrolysis products, but indicated the involvement of additional allelochemicals, especially in leaf and stem tissues. Results support the proposal that glucosinolate-containing plant tissues may contribute to reductions in synthetic pesticide use if weed seeds are targeted.

    Notes: Abstract Large Near-Earth-Asteroids have played a role in modifying the character of the surface geology of the Earth over long time scales through impacts. Recent modeling of the disruption of large meteoroids during atmospheric flight has emphasized the dramatic effects that smaller objects may also have on the Earth's surface. However, comparison of these models with observations has not been possible until now. Peekskill is only the fourth meteorite to have been recovered for which detailed and precise data exist on the meteoroid atmospheric trajectory and orbit. Consequently, there are few constraints on the position of meteorites in the solar system before impact on Earth. In this paper, the preliminary analysis based on 4 from all 15 video recordings of the fireball of October 9, 1992 which resulted in the fall of a 12.4 kg ordinary chondrite (H6 monomict breccia) in Peekskill, New York, will be given. Preliminary computations revealed that the Peekskill fireball was an Earth-grazing event, the third such case with precise data available. The body with an initial mass of the order of 104 kg was in a pre-collision orbit with a = 1.5 AU, an aphelion of slightly over 2 AU and an inclination of 5
